IMO theres a lot to be positive about from the last 4 games. Not the results obviously but I actually don't think we're that far off having a good side. On balance of general play I don't think it would be too OTT to say we should have taken 12 points from those 4 games . The fact we have 3 is a good example of how tough and punishing this division can be.
Looking through the performance today , we kept their mega expensive strike force out of the game for long long spells and controlled the match. Our midfield totally dominated theirs. The workrate all over our team was first rate. there was some really good performances- Lynch, Davidson, Butterfield, Hogg, even Whitehead had by far his best game for us. Scannell did ok and although he doesn't look 100% they had to double ,even triple up on him because they know he can hurt them. Lolley looked lively when he came on and Mussy will be a great signing IMO because he has genuine pace that will cause anyone problems.
The stand out problem that is stopping us getting the points our play deserves is the front two. Wells has the touch of a rapist. His 2nd touch is a tackle more often than not. And Miller holds the ball up very well but just doesn't have much goal threat. Between the 2 of them, their movement is poor, the touch is poor and neither look like scoring.
Theres a lot of truth in the saying- youre only as good as your strikers. We're a great illustration of that right now.
Big few days in Towns season coming up. If we can ship vaughan out and off the wage bill, and bring in a striker who can make an immediate impact on the 1st team- a clinical finisher- then it could make the difference between a season near the bottom or a season in the top half.

Totally agree... We aren't a million miles away.., but we don't create enough for us to be sure we aren't relegation candidates

Two good strikers needed, but who? Wells and Miller are awful. Leeds recognised that there are many tight games in this league and a top striker can make all the difference.

Time to throw all that Smithies cash at a striker who can control a ball but also stick it in the net.

Sounded to me that we still need a decent right back and a defence that can play 45 minutes at a time without switching off.

Think if we had someone t hit in the box or making the runs we would create The thing is a lot of the time we stand n watch scanz instead of making the runs into box so when scanz is clear he has t stop as none t hit or he puts a ball in but no one is there coz they are still admiring what's gone on. Butts is guilty of this at times too. At least when bunn plays he always trys t get back post

Do you ever see games where teams are limited to ZERO chances ? We often limit teams to ten and they don't score any.. Football is partly luck and fine margins .. We were very solid today.. We just don't quite create enough

We have the right back pipes mentions in whitehead, and replacing him in the middle with a more creative player would help. But its the front 2 who are the main issue with this side. Sort of reminds me of the side we had when Clark first came to the club. Lots of strength and quality around the team but the front 2 were Parker and jevons- neither of whome could score in a brothel. With the result what was a very strong side in league 1 finished about 10th.

Need to spend that money on a striker as well as we kept the ball today and nullified QPR to only have one shot on target I think it was is criminal. Unfortunately if our most creative spark in butterfield leaves in the next few days I think we could be in real trouble.

GOOD POST AND A BALANCED ONE.We deserved something today but lack quality in the last third but some of the comments on here are pathetic and half of them are just bile because they cant be constructive because they dont know the game. powell is ok leave off him.

Agree with most of the OP. We're not far off being decent, up until they scored they looked very average despite all the millions spent. I'm not sure I'd be so critical of the forwards though: sure, at times Miller looks clumsy, and Wells doesn't always have the best first touch, but there's a lack of support from the midfield at times too. Smith's confidence looks shot, compared to the player he was a year ago. Maybe he needs a month on loan somewhere in the 3rd division or even just a bit of a rest from the first team to build his confidence again. He hasn't become a rubbish player overnight.

How I see it too, we are a striker and centre half away from a comfortable mid table side IMO. And if we could cut out the defensive errors safe from relegation without them.
Social media and radio Lids full of the vocal minority, the self appointed online experts and bloggers all quoting stay after stat and claiming we are doomed. Get right on my tits. Even worse are the f**kers who don't go, love to tell everyone they don't as if that makes them more intelligent about football than the drones that do. All full of it tonight.
Powell needs to play more adventurous for sure, we need more players sure. But it's nowhere near as bad as some are making out!!

I was impressed today. Couldn't fault Powell to be honest. Started with two up front, got the midfield right and brought on attacking subs. Not his fault at the moment our strikers can't hit a cow's arse; Nahki traps it further than he kicks it and Miller was very uninspiring. Just not on the same same wavelengths at all.
That aside we bossed the midfield, the defense also did very well and Charlie Austin barely touched the ball. All we were lacking was a cutting edge, the end ball was always lacking. Imo we need another striker, possibly even 2. And maybe a rb (although I thought Smith did okay today, it'd be good to have a better attacking outlet down that side to work with Scannel).
I wasn't so confident of our chances of staying up before the game. Weirdly, even though we lost, I feel more confident that the side is capable of staying up

Ok he isn't going to be as creative as a Reece James but he is a right athlete and adds some steel to the team.. Really impressed

Powell got the midfield right in terms of stopping QPR playing. That they did comfortably and dominated the middle meaning we largely dominated the match possession. What our midfield lacks though is the creativity to hurt the other side. Hogg and Whitehead will keep the ball moving with simple sideways balls all day long, but neither is going to create anything. neither gets forward with runs bursting into the box. You gain on one hand and lose on the other. Huws could be the missing link, or Dempsey in that respect.

Im with you on most of that slapps, but i genuinely feel for nakhi. Played in a two feeding off a target man for most of his career, and we have him leading the line on his own one week, in a 3 the week after and with the pathetic miller today. He has 2 goals in 5 league games which is terrific given the paucity of service he has had....yes he was poor today, but it cant be easy trying to feed off miller when hes playing well, never mind when today he couldnt trap a bag of cement, had less aerial threat than a dwarf and shockingly poor movement all in one. Am struggling to understand our recruitment at the moment - the squad is now even more unbalanced than it was last week......bucketloads of midfielders, but no quality right back, a shortage of centre backs now and also striking options and no experienced keeper back up. I know its tough when we are being put under pressure to sell our top talent, but the coup de grace has been hiwulas season long loan exit........completely and utterly baffled given how much we paid and the rich promise he apparently came with, not to mention vaughans imminent departure also.

Been to three games, Hull, Blackburn and today. We've prob looked the better team in all 3 but the complete lack of ambition to go for the win has done us.

Firstly QPR were rank average, not at all decent.
Secondly our effort was more than acceptable but our end product in final third simply not good enough.
We need to support the attack and get a Holt type player in, if possible.
Overall we could be better but sadly I don't see it happening.

One of the highlights for me was a stonking Whitehead challenge - a reet beauty, straight from the days when you could tackle!
We did OK today, another day we'll get 3 pts - these things even themselves out.

My main issue with Wells today was the way his head went down after a few poor touches early on. Never got into the game after that. In terms of the squad, it seems like/I hope we've been happy to let Hiwula out on loan and presumably Vaughan to sort himself out with a move elsewhere, as we're confident we have something better lined up. Great if it comes off, but it's a pretty big risk. Also, first time I've seen Cranie and I was impressed. Reads the game well, calm and good on the ball.

Never mind this we're getting closer, we've been unlucky etc. Blackburn, Fulham, QPR - yes they have higher budgets but they've all been crap and we haven't managed to beat them. We can't keep using this higher budget excuse, nearly everyone in the league has a higher budget than us, although yes QPR's is one of THE highest. We're getting slowly better but still don't look like winning a game. Unbeaten Cardiff away next... Will it be 2 wins in 21 for CP? I understand fans want to stick with him and everyone is entitled to their opinion. But genuine question to those fans... How much longer would you give him to turn it around? 5 games to get his new signings to gel? I think that seems fair. Got some tough games ahead...

Agree with alot of that, and although the strikers have their weaknesses I would argue our lack of creativity goes beyond just them. The strikers may not be the most effective - Miller is good at holding up the ball but doesn't score, Wells will score a few but his all round game is poor - but there are other problems too. Our midfield were neat and tidy, and played reasonably well, but the support play for the wide men and strikers is poor. There is too much passing and watching in our team - give it to Scannell or someone else and hope they do the rest. Our lack of creativity in the final third is also because we don't commit enough men forward - how often do you see a midfielder beyond the strikers? - and our passing and movement isn;t good enough. Our attacking play too often relies on a single player trying to do it all on their own or someone trying to hit the only man in the opposition's box. We need to attack in threes and fours, not ones and twos. We need to be braver in our passing and moving and we need to take more chances. We don't need to be reckless - that would be a recipe for disaster - but we do need to attack with more conviction. Perhaps then we may see more from the strikers too?
