If we are to reinvest the money we got from Smithies we need to spend the bulk of it on a striker. One who is a threat up front by himself and can also still link up with either Miller or Wells as a front 2. Miller is a useful squad player to have, he'll rough up the opposition defence and can hold play up when played to his feet. Miller will never be our go to guy however. Wells can score goals but he needs them putting on a plate for him. When he's having an off day (and he was having a stinker yesterday) we need another option to go to. I don't think our strikers are helped out by this lop-sided 442 that we're playing at the moment though. We only have one outlet down the right through Scannell and Smith offers him little to no support in the final third. On the other side, whenever Davidson picks up the ball, he has no option in front of him other than to knock it long down the line to Miller; which in turn means we're then losing a striker in and around the penalty area. If we don't have a midfielder or 2 busting a gut to get into the area (and we don't have) we have very little goal threat. It's an odd set of circumstances when you start 442 and then the option you choose to try and win the game is to go 451. If anything it should be the other way around. I'd quite like to see someone new brought in to spearhead the attack and to play Scannell, Lolley and Carayol as a fluid 3 behind them. 2 in midfield of Butterfield, Hogg, Whitehead or Huws. Then if we need to go for it, bring Wells or Miller on and go 442. On another note, I'm pretty disappointed with the way the club and Dean Hoyle have treated James Vaughan. I know we haven't got enough game time out of him but whenever he has played he's given his all. He's still the best striker we have (maybe not much longer) in my opinion. We were crying out for him yesterday when Wells needed subbing. Powell can talk up Flo Bojaj all he likes and how well he's played for the development squad but there's no way under normal circumstances he would dislodge James Vaughan from the team/squad. No disrespect to Bojaj, I obviously hope he turns out to be good, but he was blatantly nothing more than bench filler yesterday as we'd given ourselves no other option. If we are letting Vaughan's contract run down we might as well get as much game time out of him as possible while he's still a Town player. I don't see any need to go to the media about it until he was either sold or until his contract had actually expired. It looks to me like we've shot ourselves in the foot if it means he won't get selected now. I don't know if anything has happened behind the scenes with him but I do think it's really poor form by the club. Very disappointing! Very good post and agree with all of that but I didn't expect to see JV playing yesterday due to his injury record as it obviously seems he is off and neither the club or the player want to risk him getting another injury before he goes.
