Just to take you back to the bad old days when Town were riding so high and then fell apart to spend many years in the wilderness following administration. Oggy was telling a story on Radio Leeds yesterday regarding Marcus Stewart. Oggy and Kieran were staying in the same team hotel as the Town players in London when Town were playing Crystal Palace (1999?). Town won - 2 goals from Stewart, his last for the club. Stewart came up to Oggy at breakfast and asked him if he could have a word. He asked Oggy if he'd heard anything about being transferred to Ipswich, Stewart hadn't heard a thing, but there were whispers and the fact was he was happy at Huddersfield and didn't really want to go.
Sort of confirms many of the stories doing the rounds at the time.

As I've said before, the single worst piece of business in my time following the club. I believe Ian Ayre had a big hand in it.
That season was our big chance and someone monumentally blew it.

£2.75m for a player who in the following season nearly got the premier league golden boot award.. What a fucking joke!
We did manage to get revenge on Ipswich to some extent though, Signing Rhodes from them for peanuts & selling him for £8m after scoring over 80 goals was some good business.. We can still potentially get another £1m from the deal aswell!

I always remember watching the recording of the 3rd round cup tie against Liverpool and the sky camera panned over the South stand and Ron Atkinson said, If this group of players and this club don't get promoted he would eat his hat or something along them lines, What could have been hey.

My all time favourite Marcus Stewart, where is he now back home in Bristol? Assistant manager at Bristol Rovers. My all time favourite Town player. We'd have won yesterday with him in the team. Not much consolation I know.

An awful decision and the more you look back now you can't help but wonder what would have happened had Rubery held his nerve and tossed Bruce a few more quid at Bruce, instead of selling Stewart.
We'll never know but the single worst decision in my 37 years supporting the club. It was also a decision that had far reaching implications
Typically Town some might say though

In hindsight it was a bad decision to sell him or were fans unhappy at the time?

Top player for Town. Him leaving was the start of Town's big decline. Often saw him on the piss around Dewsbury.

In hindsight it was a bad decision to sell him or were fans unhappy at the time? Fans were appalled by it. I think if DATM had been around then, we'd have all been in agreement it was a poor decision. I remember the banner with, "Pubic Ayre" on it, the first match after be was sold.

In hindsight it was a bad decision to sell him or were fans unhappy at the time? Top of Division 1 with an absolute gem of a striker, we were of course very unhappy. I sense the trolling in this. There was however no DATM so if anyone was unhappy, at least the chairman wouldnt log on to read NickHudds comments. Its funny Bilo how you appear when Bradford win a game, youre like a bear in hibernation when you get dicked.

In hindsight it was a bad decision to sell him or were fans unhappy at the time? No, the fans were in ecstasy! I remember the last game of the season. I was up in the Western Highlands and I think we played Fulham (away?). We had to win to get a chance of the play offs and we lost 2-1. No smart phones, but I managed to get reception at the top of every summit and phoned my father who was listening on Radio Leeds, just to get the latest score. I remember sitting at the top of the last hill (Creag Pitridh) at full time, contemplating what the fuck had happened to our season. If only I knew what was to follow!

Didn't you replace Stewart with Martin Smith who had already scored 15 goals that season for 300k so you made over £2m as well as replacing him.

They had a Danish lad in midfield out of Chelsea's reserves and he tore us to bits. Long drive home that one, bloody hell. Felt like the world had ended. Fulham went up the following year as I recall.

Can remember loads of pissed off Town fans arguing and scrapping amongst themselves.

Fulham went up the following year as I recall. Bjarne Goldbaek. Absolute class. They brought Jesper gronkjaer in later on. Clark was class too. Goldbaek's goal was fantastic. Tigana brought Collins, Saha, etc in and they went up the next year as you say. I remember sitting on the terrace with my head in my hands. The writing was on the wall against Bolton at home when gudjohnsen had torn us to bits. In reply to the Bradford lad - it is arguably the worst decision Town ever made to sell Stewart. We'd have been the play offs minimum. No two ways. We also signed Chris Hay at the same time as Smith. Neither are fit to be mentioned in the same breath as Stewart

It was hardly Ipswich's fault that Town was so stupid as to accept their speculative offer. As has been proven with that story, they hardly unsettled him and tapped him up. It was just a terrible, awful bit of business by us; the blame can only be laid at Town's door.

I remember Trevor Cherry at a fans meeting defending the sale and actually stated Stewart was a depreciating asset. Hoots of derision followed.

At the same time that Ayre - Ruberry sold Stewy, they pulled out of a £500k deal, Bruce had agreed, to bring a young Chelsea defender John Terry
What could have been!!!! FIGO

To be fair Martin Smith was a class act too but like James Vaughan he was never fit!
