Charlie Austin not selected. Not that I'm championing the man, but you have to wonder just exactly what the criteria are, and I reckon it's simply down to being a Greedy League player. If he was good enough last season, why not now? He's scored four goals already, and that's more than any English striker in the GL. You watch ... When this transfer window shuts he'll be back in the GL and he'll be selected again. Utterly stupid process.
However, just to prove the exception to this rule, I'm sure that we all remember when Marcus Stewart went up. He finished a season in the GL as the top English goalscorer behind Thierry Henry and never got a sniff of a cap.
Insane.

if your not doing it against the top teams week in week out, then you ain't going to get selected, its up to the player to play at the highest level he can if he wants to play for his country

Yet 7 goals in 38 appearances Jamie Vardy gets in. Bizarre.

So many other international teams have players in the championship - they appear to do fine!

Well Mansfield. I know you watched the match on Saturday. Are you seriously suggesting that Austin played well enough to be picked for England?

he definitely lacked interest in the game. the England squad is made up of the 'has to be ins' and a few 'flavour of the months'..
our record in qualifiers will be bandied about without reference to the quality of some of the groups we have been in.. our dismal record at tournaments will be discussed and nobody will find the answer as to why an 11 paid millions of pounds a year just cant get it together on the big occasion..
we will then all watch the premier league played at some pace and forget that England took 10 passes and an age to get the ball near the half way line the week before and were beaten by a team that just plays better that way than we do..

Yet 7 goals in 38 appearances Jamie Vardy gets in. Bizarre. Vardy is in because he plays for a Premier League team, although his style of play won't suit England, I can tell you now England won't be playing direct counter attacking football like Leicester do.

Why are no premier league teams willing to stump up 15m for him (thus far)? That's not a huge amount of money for a decent striker...
I'm no footballing expert, and I'm only speculating here - but there must be something about his game that puts managers off. Some downside that outweighs the up. And maybe Hodgson sees that too?

Like I said, I'm not championing his cause, simply pointing out the seemingly fickle nature of the selection process. No, he didn't play that well, but I think that might be down to the fact that our perpetually hammered and much-scorned defence actually marshalled him quite well.

David Sullivan (West Ham owner) said that Austin had no ligaments in his right knee. Austin refutes this. Poor work from Sullivan but, unfortunately for Austin, mud tends to stick. Hope the lad gets a move but, to me, he looked overweight and definitely uninterested on Saturday. link

I think overall the England squad is spot on.
Hart Clyne Stones Cahill Baines Ox-Chamb Carrick Barkley Sterling Rooney Kane
That's a very good side for me. I think it's a long while since we've had our top England players playing for top clubs in England and it's something we've needed more of desperately. More often than not our squad was made up of the likes of youngsters at Villa etc. Now that we've got strikers who play every week for United, Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool, why would we pick a lad who's playing against Championship teams every week? Internation football is meant to be the best of the best, which is something we've lacked for a while. How many of Germany's squad were outside of the top leagues last year?

I think your argument falls down by Tom Heaton, a Championship player, being picked. Austin may have been in the last squad but Harry Kane was with the u21s then. Now Kane is back in the full squad he gets Austin's space, who was always behind Vardy given that it was Vardy who came off the bench not Austin in a recent game.

The only problem is which to play on the left of the two. I like that side though. Knowing Hodgson (not personally) he'll probably start Henderson.

Can understand the alternative view, just think it's hardly conclusive, so to call it 'laughable' is in fact .....laughable Could imagine Vardy playing the role that Wellbeck often did very effectively for England, whilst he's started the season off on fire. Wouldn't make a judgement off one game, but could you imagine the reaction on here, if Austin was our new marque signing and played like he did on Sat! This was against our much maligned defence, as opposed to Germany.

Gibbs, Walcott and Delph shouldn't be in the squad as they haven't had enough game time this season.
Kane, Rooney and Mason shouldn't be in based on form.
The squad highlights our lack of strength in depth. Only Shelvey and Vardy (deservedly so) who have been able to force their way into a injury hit squad.
