And I'm just pointing out our "catchment area" stretches a lot further than Kirklees. By the way if you want to throw insults try for something a bit more original than "happy clapper" it's childish and doesn't help any points you may be trying to make. its not an insult you should be proud of the way you are so positive about the club you love and how you can only see good in everything they do Go away....

Time to get something off my chest. Nigel Clibbens the bloke who uses a calculator to top up the brass has a kid in the academy. Gerry Murphy had a kid in the academy, Lee Sinnott had a kid in the academy, Dean Windass had a kid in the academy, John Charles grandson and I bet there is more. Our academy isn't producing because it's a job for the boys. Sooner they stopped fucking about with giving scholarships to kids whose dad's are known the better. No wonder we aren't producing. Simon Charlton's father Wilf was an ex Town player as well, disgraceful it was!! And what about that there Brian Clough, how dare he let his son Nigel play for Nottingham Forest?!! What an absolutely stupid thread!!! Not forgetting Darren Ferguson at Man Utd. Mind you Alex soon realised he was shite and got shut.

My experience of the academy, be it before apprentiship age, was that your dad got you further than your talent, by arse licking.
Its the same at Yorkshire cricket and most other sports. The problem with this apprach is that alot of the kids lives are ruined by false promises and ultimately they get cast aside when arse kicking becomes second to talent.

I have first hand experience of this. I am not saying that that Huddersfield are quite as attractive a proposition as Man City, but they have/had Van Persies son , Darren Fletchers Twins, Emile Heskeys lad , Viv Andersons son all playing in the same age group. Only one(one of Fletchers Twins) stood out as having better than average ability.
But all the sons and more to the point their dads were used as bargaining tools to get kids to sign for them. This with the added weight of the set up over there at the Ethiad. I would love to say it is shite as i can't stand the club and its morals and ethics, but it is out of this world.
Football right from U4, yes U4 they take boys on at now, is the X factor, kids are plucked from the playing field with raw ability and moulded into footballers, they will be kept at a club until maybe 14/15 year old and then a tiny percentage will get some good news and 100's of wannabees up and down the country will have their dreams smashed and hearts ripped out.
No longer are kids getting picked up at 14/15 year old, if you are not signed on at the earliest possible age which is U9 now, your chances of making it are very very remote. I like most think it is far too young, but its the generation game and if you aren't on the conveyer belt, you chances of fulfilling your dreams are little to non.
Those released from bigger clubs will have a second chance and get swept up and get an opportunity at smaller clubs and may still make it.
I firmly believe that there are some fantastic players out there that just quit after having their dreams torn apart and fell out with the game. We may well see them every week on parks across the country on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings, but they coast through games and no longer have desires of the big time.
That is why i have time for your Lolleys and Andre Grays that despite being given heartbreaking news, they have never given up and have now got their just rewards.
Fickle Fickle Business is football now to the point where successful players offsprings will be taken on firstly that there might be a chance they turn out like their fathers or that by having them there , they become a selling point when attracting more talented kids.

However if the talented great grandson of Bobby Charlton turns up on trial I would hope his ancestry won't go against him.

Jamie was invited to a trial day at Everton last week mate. Aged 5. It's crazy but those are the lengths clubs will go to now to spot young talent as you know.

Is our academy's apparent lack of success down to our First Team success? When the Young Guns were the basis of the team, we were a club in League 2, just out of administration and therefore we had no choice but to put them in the team. At League 2 level this worked and we got promoted. Now, presumably with much the same level of scouting/coaching (no disrespect to Mark Lillis and his team) we produce academy lads that are loaned out to League 2 clubs - so the academy is doing what it has always done. It is no real surprise that lads picked up from local clubs are the same standard as before, coached to the same level as before, but because we are now in the Championship they are not quite good enough to make hat step straight up. Does that mean we need to bring in better coaches when we get promoted, like we bring in First Team managers "with Championship experience"? Is this Dean Hoyle's masterplan for spending millions on PPG, to raise the academy standard, thus attracting better coaches to bring the young lads on to a higher level. It all takes time, especially as the young lads from junior football are of a similar level as before due to grassroots football having to compete for funds/facilities more than ever and grassroots coaching still being blighted by "give it to the big lad to smack it in the net" philosophies rather than taking time to develop with more/better qualified coaches - too much expectation on the kids and the coaches to produce Premiership / Championship players - pressure from the parents mainly. How many of Chelsea/Liverpool/Man Utd academy players get loaned out to lower league clubs to continue their development? I know that not many get into their first team straight out of the academy. Interesting debate, and maybe the "famous names" in this world have a better mentality to getting their kids to do the basics right, and have the mental attitude to stick with it rather than drop out after 3 years when their little johnny has not got a £150,000 a week contract by the age of 15. Tough one, and one which I am sure the club is working on.

The last two academy products from Murphy were Smithies and Hunt - both comfortably Championship quality
Tom Clarke also plays at this level. Jon Stead played Premier League and also Championship. Mirfin and Collins played in the Championship with Scunny and Watford in Mirfins case
Injuries almost certainy cost Nathan Clarke a big move
Worthy and Holsworth were top end League One players who were affected by injury
Berrett, Scarz, Akins, McCombe, Eastwood all having solid careers
I'm not even saying Murphy is a genius because 20 years ago we brought through Booth, Charlton (two top flight regulars), Donovan, Trevitt, Martin, Billy, Bent, Ireland, Mitchell, Collins, Rowe in the space of about 3 years
The thing is the academy now should be producing far better - more resources, scouting players from Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Norway plus the local area.
However at the moment it's hard to argue there's been a step forward from 10 or even 20 years ago
