I think me favourite team was in 1965-66, I had so many favourites in what was a fantastic season..if not the best I've seen.. Oldfield McNab Atkins Nicholson Coddington Meagan McHale Massie Leighton Quigley O'Grady Gilliver Dinsdale Weston We missed out on promotion to league one by 3 points after only winning 2 of our last 10 games, and ended up 4th. The last game we had 25,000..we also had 25,000 against Bolton, 31,000 against Man City, and the average that season was 18,000. We also had almost 50,000 in Leeds rd for a cup tie against Wednesday.. we had the meanest defence in the league...I think I'd name Nicholson, Meagan, Oldfield and McNab as my favourites..I was 16 at the time... Despite the disappointment at the end, it was a brilliant season and we got loads of publicity, esp in the Daily Express 'cos the sports writer was a Town fan !! I saw a couple of games towards the end of the 64-65 season, but 65-66 was my first full season. Highlights for me included John Coddington blasting wide a penalty against Bolton, my first ever away game at Bury where Town won 4-0 including three goals in four minutes, my first ever FA Cup game against Hartlepool who had the fattest goalie I've ever seen, and of course that awful disappointment at the end of the season against Coventry....my first ever Town defeat! Highlights of the Cov game from MOTD on the link below: Magnificent memories.

Watched town since 1971, but the Buxton years were my favourite. Brian Stanton was a big hero of mine, scored a few Huws screamers, but I have a soft spot for all of the promotion winning team of 79.

Where were you in '71! (4-1 defeat with Gilzean murdering us but Town played pretty well) Now you mention it I do remember seeing Gilzean and Martin Chivers at our place. Maybe that was the season before. I missed a lot of games in those two seasons because I was playing myself on Saturday afternoon. I meant at White Hart Lane - the 2 home Spurs games in our First Division days were dire affairs

As a flair player i sense his frustration when working as a pundit...he just wants to show them. I feel sure he never played against Town. Early in his career i went especially to watch him in a friendly at Dartford. He was very special. Didn't he play against us when player manager of swindon ? I really dont know, lets have a check.

Keep hoping we'll get drawn against them in the cup and I'll get to White Heart Lane before it shuts. The same goes for me. My tow fav teams and never met since 71. We would have got them in the Cup when the Dons dumped us.

Wow, what a player Hoddle was, his peak was slightly before my time but my dad always goes on about how good he was, his close control and passing were class . Thanks for putting that up.
Also he was doing a good job as England manager IMO before he got the boot for non footballing reasons!!

You could almost smell the fear coming off the opposing keeper as Kindon's huge pale thighs came thundering at them with the ball at his feet or chasing down an errant backpass. It was the era of fairly short shorts which probably added to the effect. Totally agree, he was brilliant, a massive hero and got to meet him plenty of times later on. (Klc is a clue) Then there was Ben Thornley, fastest thing in a Town shirt i've seen and that winner against Wolves..

Non Town - Gazza. Town - Stewart. Surprised you've opted for a striker tbh, knowing your dislike for attacking football My thoughts exactly, you should have heard him moaning at Sean Jarvis in Botafogos tonight about Powell being too attacking, he kept saying he wanted to see 4 CB's and 2 FB's on the pitch with Jamie McCombe up front

Ok here we go...
I've eulogised as much as the rest of you about how great Dean Gorre was, I've had many a drunken conversation about him and how he was the one.
Thing is looking back I don't actually recall either the games, or the press reports, or the footage of those games that support the legend.
Don't get me wrong I was a big fan, but when saying he was the best, what actually are we talking about? What are the moments/memories that made the legend?
I'd suggest he was a stand out midfielder for less than a complete season , at a time when we were undoubtedly looking good, but... are we really saying that this journeyman who didn't prove to be anything elsewhere is one of our best ever? and he's deserved of being spoken in the same breath as other bonified legends that've worn the blue and white?
He came at the right time in a period of hope but for rose tinted specs I think Clayton & more recently Butterfield (hopefully Huws too) have been 'Gorres' more recently.
Somebody convince me of his 'moments' because I was there and I don't remember them?

Frankie, Jimmy Nich, Alan Sweeny, Jimmy Lawson and Lloyd Maitland, I don't think I could pick a favourite among them, they all bring back special memories.
Non Town has to be George Best.

My view is that the Gorre legend has got a bit out of hand .. he came from Ajax and some of the skills he displayed were champions league class.. he was untouchable for maybe ten games.. but that's it .. he only played 60 games for us and waned after the initial sparkle I m o .. best player ever ? ? Where did we sell him to ? Barcelona ? ... No Barnsley ..

by the way....was at Old Trafford for a cup replay between Man U and Spurs (1980ish) when Hoddle had to go in nets (one sub which was never a keeper in those days) after Joe Jordan stamped all over the spurs keeper (foriegn name can't remember...think he came from Luton?) and Spurs won after a brilliant chip from Ardilles in extra time.

It's not just skills that appeal. Another for Darren Bullock.
Edit. As a player for England Bryan Robson.

I think it's his character too. He's one of them that would have probably played for nothing. Sponsored a game and he got man of the match so had to present a ball to us. And despite the suits desperate to preserve their asset and not have him get injured or have things get out of hand, a football being handed over was an immediate, "you play? Let's have a kick about" with him pulling off some neat little tricks..think his toddler joined in too (currently on loan to a Dutch club).

Mainly for his final whistle fist pump to the crowd. A victory didn't feel complete until you'd roared in appreciation of Toms "this is a team, and you 7000 are all in it too" gesture.

Well as far as other teams are concerned & being an old git, Jimmy Greaves was the best of a great bunch. My Dad used to get tickets for Spurs as freebies so I saw him play a few times in the sixties. He was Jordan Rhodes, who incidentally is some what underrated in my opinion!, with style. (Let's face it I bet Jordan doesn't have a tailor)but the best ever Town player, that I watched, must be F. Worthington. He had it all. Just liked the women and the booze, strictly in that order, too much. Intelligent bloke too. Very personable and articulate. Would be a PR man's dream today and would be earning £100k a week no doubt, despite all the eccentricity! If anyone remembers the Tottenham mods or Lord Jims--all the best.

Billy Coulson - played twice in 1975 (on loan I believe). The way be could run the ball out of play for a throw in to the opposition was a pleasure to behold!

Played against Sweeney a few times when he'd dropped down to District League level. Also played against Maitland in the Sunday League, before I joined the Wappy and played in the same team. Nasty bastard, but, to be fair, he was a bit of a target for the opposition and could take it as well as give it. He was just very adept at getting his retaliation in first... Town - Andy Rankin, Brian Cox and Brian Stanton were my favourite players as a kid. Others - Ray Clemence and Ray Kennedy.

Saw him just the once at home to Darlington in November 75. Wiry little winger on loan from Southend. I remember one of his legs looked thinner than it should!
