Whatever you think of the lad himself, for me that programme reinforced that football is a working class game & always should be...
Whether it will be remains to be seen but nice to see snippets of footage showing raw passion and fans just caught up in the game, for 90 mins not giving a shiny shite about what the papers will be saying the day after or how many pundits will dissect the performance of their team...

I think he struggles with the fame & the 1-2-1 scenarios that threw up for him...
Never heard his missus much before this either - clearly not trying to get a million miles away from their scouse roots like good 'ol Cilla...

He came across as a typical lad, working class roots, well grounded..not a big head, modestly shy too.

Reminds you how much a player can capture the imagination of a nation in a major tournament. With Rooney we could/should have gone all the way in 2004.

Me and my mates went on a stag do in Liverpool 3 years back and had an afternoon in the company of his brother Graham, if he was an indication of what Wayne would have become if he didn't have football in his life then I would say Wayne had a very lucky escape.

It also reminds you of the player that we all hoped he could and would become after that tournament, sadly he has never quite reached those heights.

His countries record goal scorer, over 100 caps and more trophies than you can shake a stick at. The boy did alright.

However, he looked like having the potential to become as devastating a player as Messi and Ronaldo when he first burst through and sadly it's never happenned.

He should still be able to look back with immense pride, though.

There has never been a player as good and there is unlikely to be for another century at least. The bloke plays the game on a completely different level to any who have gone before him.

A fairer comparison is with Ronaldo, a player who he was probably on a par with circa 2004-06. Ronaldo went to a different level, genuine world class. Rooney never made that leap.

I know he didnt stay too long at Everton, but the impact that a 16 year old had on the supporters was amazing, Home grown talent did well. If only our academy could produce even a hint of homegrown talent, that would help engage the fans with the club.

Agreed, though he's stuck at it and done the best he could. He's never had the athletic ability that's helped Ronaldo stand out.

like any other famous person he has struggled with the total nonsense that f-ckwits spawn that he should be a 'role model'...
there are a great number of jobs that do involve you being a role model for society in general..footballer, pop star etc should never, ever have been put in with those jobs..

Used to be an amazing player I agree. He was astonishing when he first came on the scene and for 5 or 6 years but past his best now. Thought Michael Owens career went in a similar way. Breathtaking for a few early years. You might have thought that they would get better as they got older but I guess they both relied on physical attributes more than other "great" players.

I don't think Rooney has helped himself though, smoking and getting fat each summer hasn't done him much good.

If only our academy could produce even a hint of homegrown talent, that would help engage the fans with the club. I think that's where a lot of Academy thinking goes wrong. Academies don't produce players like Rooney, Owen, Messi, Ronaldo. Their skills are innate. The Academies just give them a bit of a pathway and more than anything - tie them to your club for a while. So I'd rephrase that to say that it would be great if our Academy could pick up a lad locally with the talent of a Rooney. Suspect any 10 yo from the Huddersfield area with the 10yo talent of Rooney or Owen would be off to one of the Manchester academies anyway!

Really enjoyed it...always been a big fan of his. Shame he doesnt seem to be the same player anymore..he was so fucking good in 04..seems to have lost the fire in the belly for it now he's a dad.
But whatever people say about him never reaching his early potential, he's still had an outstanding career.
