Really enjoyed it...always been a big fan of his. Shame he doesnt seem to be the same player anymore..he was so fucking good in 04..seems to have lost the fire in the belly for it now he's a dad. But whatever people say about him never reaching his early potential, he's still had an outstanding career. Not scored an away goal for ManUre in almost a year according to the BBC on Sunday. Now that came as a real shock to me!

His all round ability and willingness to operate deeper has reduced his goal scoring threat level. He was initially and primarily an outstanding striker. If Messi or Ronaldo were lumbered with his work load they would have probably gone the same way.

To me he seems to prefer sitting in the number 10 role trying to be the new Gazza or Maradona, something he will clearly never be. If he was just told to play up top and accepted it he would be a far better player in my opinion, yet he seems to be a bit unmanageable in that he has to be involved all the time. Sadly I think he started to believe a bit of his early hype and as a result never made the most of his talents. Yes he has had an outstanding career based on a "normal" footballer, but measured against the potential he had he has probably achieved just above the minimum possible.

I agree - I think it probably started with his willingness to chase back to help the team, but as you say he'd have been better sticking up top. Ruud Gullit said some interesting things about the strikers role. They shouldn't run around like buggery but save their energy for when it really mattered. Think we need to tell Isshy that. Sometimes he picks up the ball, goes on a 20 yard run, but is clearly then too knackered to compose himself and get a decent shot off!

Maybe he's had some of the talent coached out of him over the yrs - probably not the first time a prodigious talent has been suppressed. Whereas Ronaldo was allowed the freedom to roll about etc...
Back to the main point though, perhaps this Wayne should have taken a leaf out of another Wayne's book and retired at the top?

Can't help but agree with those who say that he didn't quite fulfil early expectations.
And; agree that he's had a very good career even if he isn't as good as Messi and Ronnie, but then in the whole history of the game very few have attained their level of near perfection. ---- come to think of it though there was a dark haired Northern Irishman, similar age to myself..... (no I won't go there again!)
My frustration with the programme though (and I will accept that this could be the result of seniority or the need of a syringe) was that I found understanding the foreign accents of our hero and his missis very difficult to understand.

Used to be an amazing player He did and would of carried on being one if he hadn't gone to man u under Ferguson, he coached it all out of him for the good of the team,as he did with rio too, both were great cogs in great teams but neither allowed to express thereselves, rooney even had to play out of position in the cl final cos or Ronaldo, it was telling too that fergie didnt say anything on the program either.

Just watched it. Really good programme and Rooney came across very well i thought. Hes done very well to stay so 'normal' having had the media attention on him permanently since he was so young.
He was a hell of a player when he was young. Same dynamic power and energy Gazza had when he was young. Never really fulfilled that early potential but even so, hes had a fantastic career and is an all time england and man utd great whichever way you look at it.

I'd like to see how good Ronaldo would be feeding off Fellaini's scraps!
It's no coincidence that he has lost his cutting edge and plays far deeper now the quality of his team mates has declined.
A shame he didn't leave in 2013/14 as I think being the focal point of a very good team would have given his career a real second wind. As it is he wastes most of his energy picking up his team mates' slack.

I'd like to see how good Ronaldo would be feeding off Fellaini's scraps! Ronaldo would just go 'fuck Fellaini' and create and score them himself.

That Champions League final headed goal v Chelsea, Ronaldo's got one hell of a jump on him. 6 ft 1 too.
Goes back to one of the big differences between him and Rooney, athleticism.
