Barnsley club??? Bloody hell, just up the road from Lepton, definitely Huddersfield. 3 miles nearer to Town than Barnsley for a kick off!

Emley under Gerry Quinn were excellent, miles above where they should have been. Shame the ground held them back. Remember a bloke called Tunnicliffe, tonabricks, eat a full cooked chicken before a game. Stan Rowlands of Battyeford fame used to be a massive fan up there. Had some very happy days home and away with my Dad following Emley. If that's Tunny from Newsome, he was a brick shithole of a centre forward. Great lad, I once went on a stag do to Scarborough with him. He must have sunk 25 pints and he wasn't pissed. He taught me bottle walking.

Worked in the Same office as Dean Calcutt about 14 years ago. He had a photo on his desk of him Vs West Ham marked by a young Rio Ferdinand.

From memory Quinn was a teacher from St John Fishers, moved to Accrington or somewhere after working miracles at Emley.

They still talk highly of him over there. And Tunnacliffe (who he took with him from Emley) is a cult hero to them.

Always consider them a Huddersfield club but isn't it actually nearer Barnsley? Brighouse Town seem most upwardly mobile nonleague club in the area but they never seem to have the connection with Town that Emley did. Incidently what happened to the Wakefield team the original Emley FC merged with? Never really gained a following at Belle Vue, after a relegation or two they moved to Thornes Park Athletics stadium then wound up a few years ago. Wakefield just isn't a football town. Wakefield tried to do to Emley what Milton Keynes did to Wimbledon. Take an established little club and steal the franchise to introduce football into their town. It never worked and it set Emley back a long way. But for that who knows they might have reached Conference standard and maybe even challenged for a place in the league. Fortunately they re-formed and picked up the pieces.

Golcar Utd will soon be challenging them Not without a significant upgrade on their current facilities they won’t. Golcar Utd are in same league next season. Got some good away days including fc Blackpool. Plans for a stand to be built, got a great committee up there.

Good luck to them.

To think they came so close to what became Conference North is quite remarkable for a team from a village of about 2,500 people.

They play virtually at the end of my road (I don't live anywhere in Cardboard City, I might add!), so I've been calling round regularly to check on the progress of the ground improvements. They're doing a great job down there, fair play to the club.

Cracking p.e. teacher too. Gerry lived a few doors up from me at Marsh when I was growing up. Proper footballing family - his wife is Ian Greaves's daughter and his son managed Brighouse Town for a while. Living at Lindley now. Currently recovering from a mild heart attack, but thankfully well on the mend.
