- Huddersfield Town's 2018/19 retained list confirmed - Lössl, Williams, Depoitre, Durm and Payne leave the Club - Paperwork on the Isaac Mbenza deal to be completed
Huddersfield Town’s Retained List at the end of the 2018/19 season has been confirmed today.
Five players who have previously featured for Town’s First Team in competitive action will leave the Club; Jonas Lössl, Erik Durm, Danny Williams, Jack Payne and Laurent Depoitre.
The loan spells of Isaac Mbenza and Jason Puncheon will come to an end, although the Club will take the option to make Mbenza’s move a permanent one this summer. The paperwork on that deal is still to be completed.
Town has taken its option of a year’s contract extension on Academy centre back Rarmani Edmonds-Green, while six of his teammates – Olly Dyson, Ben Jackson, Luke Mewitt, Micah Obiero, Dom Tear and Oran Thompson – have been offered new professional contracts.
10 further players have been released following the end of their contract or scholarships with the Academy.
Regan Booty, who has played in pre-season friendlies for the Terriers, is among those players, alongside goalkeeper Gabriel Rosario; defenders Jake Barrett, Harry Spratt, Jordan Eli, Sam Gibson and Mason O’Malley; midfielder Dahomey Raymond and forwards George Danaher and Ben Mills.
The Club would like to thank all the players who are leaving the Club and wishes them all the best for the future.

No surprises there really. Personally glad we haven't offered Durm a deal.
The Mbenza situation is what it is I suppose.

Personally I'd have offered Williams a deal. Proven at Championship level and excellent cover for Hogg.

That's a serious amount of money off the wage bill and we haven't even started with some of the contracted players leaving.
Not fussed about any of them leaving really

Personally I'd have offered Williams a deal. Proven at Championship level and excellent cover for Hogg. I assume you mean you would offer Williams a deal based on appearances, seeing as he has been injured for the best part of the last 2 seasons? I agree he is a good player but too risky for me,

Personally I'd have offered Williams a deal. Proven at Championship level and excellent cover for Hogg. Got to be his injury record. We'll have medical experts assessing them all the time so it could be the case we've just decided he isnt worth the risk.

Personally I would have kept Jack Payne, good squad player and good enough on the bench I would have hoped.

A little surprised by Regan Booty being released but I guess he did not progress as expected. This was from when he signed on loan at Aldershot:
"The 20-year-old central midfielder playmaker has been a mainstay of Town’s Academy sides for a number of years now, but this will give Regan his first taste of senior football at a great level.
Holmfirth-based Regan first joined Town at under-9 level and quickly progressed up the age groups, making his debut for the Club’s under-18 team as a 15-year-old.
Booty signed his first professional contract at the Club on his 17th birthday and was a key member of the Under-21 side that won the Professional Development League title in 2016.
A regular in training with David Wagner’s First Team, Regan made his non-competitive senior debut for the Terriers in the Shankly Trophy match against Liverpool FC on 20 July 2016"
He played 38 games for Aldershot. Hope he does OK elsewhere.

Payne would have been good in the championship.
We never see any ins or outs before June usually. Wonder if there will be any early movements.

If you believe this site (they look fairly realistic) then that's just over £7 million off the wage bill. Granted they'd have been on 40% less next season It's not long since £7 million would have been our wage bill for the whole squad. How times have changed www.spotrac.com/epl/huddersfield-town/payroll/

"the Club will take the option to make Mbenza’s move a permanent one this summer"...yeah right, like the club had a choice in the matter!
Shame Jack Payne is leaving, was a decent option in the promotion season.

Shame about Williams but we can't afford to pay injury prone players, as for jack Payne I'm a bit surprised we gave up on him as he is a little fighter and scored that beauty at newcastle , but we have Grant now who will prove to be a star in the Championship. The transfer window is now open and closes a week before the season starts in August,so we've about 12 weeks to sort the squad out for our promotion push next season...when we'll beat leeds in the play off final, 6-0...

I’m assuming Town think they can get a few bob for Rekeil Pyke. He needs to go somewhere permanent for the sake of his career. Salford City perhaps?

Dont quite understand what happened to depoitre.. He looked a beast at times last season.. Outmuscled harry maguire to score v leicester.. Great finish at watford.. Nice header at southampton.. And of course the bulldosing run and goal at chelsea.. Last seasons depoitre would cause havoc in the championship... This season hes looked like a sunday lg player. .frightened of the ball..uninterested.. Shame🥴

Didn't realise that Payne's contract was up. In light of this I'm very surprised he wasn't just sold last summer. There would've definitely been takers.

Personally I'd have kept Payne and Durm, Williams also but I guess that's an injury issue, if he goes to Stoke and plays 40 games it's a mistake but if he only makes 15 it's the right call. What's the situation with Hamer ? Under contract for another year ?

Of the senior players going, they can all be viewed through the lens of being bad business or a smart move from the club.
With Lossl and Durm going after 1 year. That's either a poor negotiating position effectively waiving any transfer fee in the case of relegation- OR it's a smart way of getting rid of higher earners in the case of relegation.
It seems that with how little he featured when fit, even a pay as you play type deal with Williams was just never on the table. I don't know the ins and outs of his fitness, but he's proven in the Championship, and with the likelihood of us starting next season with another thin squad, I hope that doesn't come back to bite us.
With Payne, as per my previous post, if this was the plan with him all along we should've sold him last summer as we would've definitely got a fee. If it's just a matter of him not fitting into Jan's plans then fair enough, although I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up taking a trajectory like Duane Holmes as there's definite Championship quality in there.
The exception to this is Depoitre, who embarrassed himself this season and will find himself lucky wherever his next offer comes from. There's no legislating for how poor he's been.

If Stekelenburg stays at Everton Lossl would be 3rd choice

So that's thinned it out a little and think off the top of my head it leaves us with the below for now. Plus Rowe, Duahaney etc..
Clearly more will go, or have virtually gone. Unfortunately some will stay.
If we built a team around Schindler, Mooy and Grant I'd be confident we'd have a good season.
Hamer Coleman Schofield
Flo Smith Schindler Stankovic Zanka Kongolo Lowe
Mooy Bacuna Billing Hogg
Mbenza Diakhaby Kachunga VLP Sobhi Quaner Sabiri Pritchard
Grant Mounie

Hamer - has been told he won’t play again, so up to him if he’s happy to stay but not play Then I’ll be surprised if Mooy, Kongolo, Schindler, Diakhaby, VLP are all here too.
