They can also take anything they like out, they have your details they are in control.

I don't think that is true to be honest, and they certainly can't increase an amount without telling you in advance. I'm sure you can cancel a DD at any time, and it requires your permission to reinstate it. However if you cancel a DD mid way through a contract, you are still liable to pay the rest of the contract amount and the company will chase you for it, so not advisable.

Entirely incorrect.

Entirely incorrect. From my NatWest online banking - cancelling direct debits:
What to do To avoid this happening, log in to Online Banking the same day the payment is due where you will be given the option to make the payment or not. You can do this up until 8pm.
It’s a good idea to inform the Originator as they may set up a new direct debit if they are not expecting the payments to stop.

Unfortunately banks mislead their customers quite often when it comes to DD’s.

Then I apologise for being misled and ultimately misleading others I wouldn’t have told someone to do it if I hadn’t done it myself. My issue was with a gym. Signed a 12 month contract then they wanted 3 months notice My arse. Cancelled DD. They tried taking it a couple of times then gave up.

Then I apologise for being misled and ultimately misleading others I’ve thought the same in the past mate, banks like passing the buck and unfortunately get away with it. DD guarantee protects all DD’s and if you cancel it then it’s cancelled. Obviously if you do owe the money then they can chase it up but they can’t take it via the details you provide for the DD.
