Cox would be getting pelters on DATM over the Millwall goal. 3 Town touches from a Millwall corner and it's 1-0 Town, someone show Seiwert quick.

Allardyce for Millwall. Buxton saying get it forward and into the box quickly cos he didn’t like all the sideways and backwards passing he saw in games abroad. He was right as well. There's a difference between just aimlessly hoofing it and the way Town got it forward under Buxton. Give me three or four passes followed by a goal any day if the week instead of 30 sideways passes resulting in a pass back to the keeper. That was brilliant! Well done for finding & posting OP. Properly put a smile back on my face amongst all the potential doom n gloom of the next 24 hrs or so. My 18 year old lad was also properly impressed. Couldn’t answer him why we don’t get it forward like that now instead of all the fannying around with sideward & backward passes. Mick Buxton, could do a job for us that fella.

Thanks for posting.
No inane commentator drivel reeling off stats, no theatrics, no gloves or snoods etc. etc.
A lovely find and a brilliant contrast to what we see today. Football for its age, different pace, Div 3, but still a lovely watch.
I think we managed as many mins in highlights as we've done for most of the last 2 seasons as well.
Far too many positives to list...

Happy days, some cracking football there, I’d got this notion football from back then seemed to be in slow motion compared to nowadays, but having watched on Monday we can say it’s the opposite!

Allardyce looked bloody awful in that game what made Buxton sign him, to be honest he weren't much better at Town, he couldn't trap a bag of cement that fella.

Mark Lillis worked really hard to set up his team mates, as well as scoring goals. He made full use of his talent and didn't stand around waiting for things to happen.
Colin Russell's career seemed to drift after leaving Town for some reason. He always got on well with his neighbours though.

Bring back the days you could swap ends at half time. You couldn't by 83. I reckon 81 was the last time you could go in the open end

Don't know what happened with Russell, but seemed like a fall out with Buxton as I recall he was surprisingly benched then just seemed to lose interest. Cracking player when on form as evidenced by those goals.

Think you are on the money with that. Could still go from terrace to Cowshed for a few years but the open end became an away only preserve. There were games against lower division southern teams when Town fans went in the open end where you never saw an away fan. I think the few that travelled went in the main stand.

Wasn't there a story about him fighting with his neighbours in meltham ? Or summat like that ?

The first match of the Young Terriers supporters group if I remember rightly. Sat in the wing stand at the Cowshed end.
Fish fingers and chips at the Sports Centre, double decker bus to the ground.
Worshipped Lillis and Stanton.
Phil Wilson as well.
Happy days!

No goaline technology then, still not sure if Hanvey's effort fully crossed the line. Yes defintely looked a bit iffy, but complaints from Millwall. Could you see that happening today? Willis would have had 11 Millwall players in his face.

Especially midweek matches. I recall Gillingham, Newport, Plymouth bringing those sort of numbers. Remember it was 3 and 4th level. many home crowds were just 3000. Also milk trains ended through the night around this period and the country was in an economic mess. When Liverpool paraded the trophy at Anfield in their last match v Norwich in 1984 there were 60-70 away fans...and they had finished 4th in the league!

Reading Swindon Plymouth - you just didn't see any.
Season tickets weren't as readily available, home crowds fluctuated much more than now.

I remember that game so much, I’d just finished my six weeks basic training at RAF Swinderby and was on leave before going to trade training.

I had a season ticket from 77 to about 84. You just went down to the ticket office. Much cheaper back then. Think in 83 it was £50 a season.

In 1981 home crowds varied between 6000 and 29000 It was much cheaper relatively to pay in also Apoor run saw crowds dip while a few wins and they inceased. These days you can virtually guess the attendance before ko for every game

Looking at the kit I think paddy power were sponsoring us that season The year of the (in)famous Central Mirfield prank ... In all seriousness, brilliant find. Cheered me right up.Mission accomplished then - although think am gonna have to find the match of the day footage from when we beat Bolton in April 1926 to confirm hat-trick of titles to cater for today’s reaction’s on on here!
