Is it time to have a rethink about the club captain?
Let's face it, the ship is without a rudder and is drifting around in all sorts of directions. Captain Schindler seems to have all on trying to do his own job (defending) without the added responsibility of trying to steer the vessel as well.
The natural candidate for me is Hogg who in the past has been a visible leader and who has been prepared to grab the game by the scruff and lead by example. Yes, he shouts at his team mates, but I reckon at this moment in time that this is exactly what is needed.

The problem with Hogg is he'd scream at his grandma for 5 minutes while the rest of his family were having their Sunday dinner just because he tried to pass the salt to her when she wasn't ready even though his grandad was waiting for it.
He can still captain without an armband I jut don't think the players respond to the way he does it. To be honest the players probably don't respond because he's not on his game but also because players and people in general aren't the same these days. Molly coddled, pampered what ever the reason is irrelevant really it's just the way it is. People and players tend to respond better to encouragement rather than having someone shouting at them especially when they themselves aren't doing much better.

Doesn;t matter who wears the armband, Hoggs the captain of that team. No idea why Schindler officially is. Maybe it was part of persuading him to stay?

I'd back that up, Hogg had him scurrying around on a couple of occasions. Being captain probably will improve his CV, but he needs to be getting back to Germany, quickly.

Hogg will be lucky to be in the team if he plays like he did tonight too many more times.

I don't rate Flo at all but he has been far more effective than last season and one of the best this so far. Not saying a lot, mind.

Especially when judged against the record signing on the other side of the pitch.. 🤷♂️ Not many are saying it but Kongolo looks shocking at the moment. He takes an age on the ball to decide what he's going to do and is usually closed down and has his pass blocked when he finally plays it. The only reason he looks good is because he makes some last ditch tackles to make up for giving the ball away 5 seconds earlier. Still looks like a player who isn't giving even 50% of what he's capable of Flo was by far the better of the two last night.

I think the part about not giving what he's capable of is one of the biggest parts of the problem. There are players that don't want to be here. Not necessarily Huddersfield but the Championship. Someone needs to come in and get them playing to potential and get them wanting to get out the league (the right way!), there are good players here but you wouldn't know it so far.

On Hogg, it's all well and good being the nasty, shouty bastard in the middle if your performances actually back that up in any way. He's been shite for a while now. Every time he gets the ball we lose any sort of momentum because he doesn't have the ability needed to do anything with it. I think he's a massive part of the reason why we look so uncomfortable in possession once we get past the half way line because he struggles playing a simple five yard pass unless it's back to one of the center halves.
It baffles me just how comfortable every other team we play against seems to be in possession. All it takes to unsettle town at the minute is to press whoever is on the ball and we inevitably panic and lose the ball. Hogg is a major part of that because the minute that the opposition apply any sort of pressure to him he inevitably fucks it up and gives it away.
I love him as a character and he's been brilliant for this club for years but it's really starting to grate on me the amount of times he'll misplace a pass then stand there screaming at someone else for his own mistakes. I honestly think we'd be better of dropping him and putting someone in there who might actually be able to contribute to our attacking play in some way.

I guess losing 40% of your salary could easily be a massive de motivator and make you care a bit less. But to be honest I think he’s struggling because he’s simply not a left back and doesn’t have anything like the technical or physical ability to play that role effectively. It was masked somewhat in the EPL where we were under the cosh constantly so he played more like a simple flat defender...but now we’re expecting to win more than 5 out of 40 games (hopefully!), then things are different. Left and right back are arguably the most valuable roles in the team across pretty much all modern footballing systems. You can’t just lump any old player there and expect them to perform...that he’s done as well as he has (which is not very well, in comparison to someone who plays the role). Put Schindler or Elphick there and they’d be even worse. Personally, given the lack of a specialist proven left back, I’d be going to three centre half’s with Elphick, Schindler and Kongolo, which should reduce the defensive part of the left back role somewhat and just throw VLP at it...he’s really pretty good at trundling up and down the wing and getting back where required. Either that or give the new lad a run (no idea how he stood up v Lincoln?), and get Kongolo back in the middle with Schindler where he belongs and Elphick on the bench, exactly where you’d expect a 31 year old who played less than 10 games in 2019 and played no part in the final 12 or 13 or so to be...ready to take to the pitch and do a good steady reliable job in the event of injury etc. (although I don’t know why Stankovic couldn’t be trusted with that, it’s hardly likely going to amount to more than 5 or 6 appearances across the season).

I think the problem for Hogg is that when he looks forward there are no options, our midfield and Particularly wide players are static Mbenza generally stands still and is marked out of the game, no one makes any movement to receive a ball in space, the only option then is to go backward. It looks like basic coaching to me, give the man om the ball some options, retain position, play around the opposition. The other issue seems to be how much space the opposition get in our half, we seem wide open to a quick ball or long ball forward, often leading to a 1 on 1 situation, how often do we get that in the opposite half? we never seem to work overloads or a 1 on 1 situation, it's like the other team have more players on the pitch! probably to do with the speed we move the ball, but again it's not coached into the player to work together to exploit certain areas of the pitch, Smith and Kachunga is an example of it working well when we got promoted, neither individually outstanding, but a partnership that contributed countless assists and created opportunities. There is hope, but we need someone who can work on the basics with the team, that's why the next appointment is so important, it's not just the manager but the coaching team that comes with him.

There comes a point when, while you're busting a gut to do your best, you look around and see others operating at 50%. You kinda then think, why bother.
I stand by my original point that if there's no leader off the pitch then there is a big opportunity for someone to grab the problem ON the pitch.

There is hope, but we need someone who can work on the basics with the team, that's why the next appointment is so important, it's not just the manager but the coaching team that comes with him. I can see where you're coming from there, it definitely doesn't help that there's no movement in front of him. Even then though I don't think he's even confident enough in himself to consistently play those passes forward even if there is an option. Don't get me wrong, he's been great for us at being the man to break up opposition play consistently over the last few years when they get in to our half. I think now (especially with the loss of Mooy who was our main ballplayer for the last three seasons) his ability to do that no longer makes up for the other limitations in his game. I would much rather have someone slightly less adept at breaking up opposition play but who can also offer something when we're in possession because once we get the ball Hogg might as well be playing center half because he offers nothing to our attacking play. Completely agree with your points on coaching. I honestly can't remember the last time we were in a position where it looked like we had worked the ball into a situation to overload the opposition, yet it seems to happen to us at least a couple of times each half, never mind game. You don't need a team of world beaters in this league, we proved that when we went up. You just need at least a couple of partnerships across the pitch that you can go to throughout a game that allow you to build some sort of momentum or control, however brief it might be. It feels like an awful long time since we had anything like that, the last one was probably Smith and Kachunga in the promotion season like you mentioned. I honestly don't know what they've been coached to do for the last 6 months at least, because I can't remember the last time I came away from game with an idea of what our system or playing style was supposed to be.

Ridiculous decision from Jan to take the captaincy off Smith. He'd likely still be here had it not have happened. Why that didn't set alarm bells ringing with the board is anyone's guess. What did they think when billing got players, player. Another big fuck off red flag, just one of many the club chose to ignore, incorrectly thinking they had a clue what they were doing.

However when you look at the pitch maps, elphick spends half of his time covering for Hadj. Whilst elphick hasn't made a great start this will be having an impact on his game. Schindler doesn't have to cover on his side. New fullbacks for the weekend?

Didn't PH say he got Elphick because Schindler wasn't captain material and was too quiet?
