Given the recent change to the RAF dress standards, I'm 9 days into my 2.5mm - 25.5mm beard growth. 101 years of oppression and we now own (within regs) our own facial hair! Standards have dropped since my days in uniform. I still feel filthy if I don’t shave these days in civvy street! I don’t think it comes down to a drop in standards. Did the Navy have lower standards by traditionally allowing beards? I don’t think it did. It’s more about modernisation and continuing to appeal to society in a bid to make it an attractive job/career. The change has been introduced to aid recruitment and improve retention. The old school might not like it, but change isn’t always a bad thing. The RAF needs more of it! I must admit though, after 22 years of shaving every day before work, I feel like a naughty school boy at the moment! |

Didn't the Royal Navy have a rule that you could have a beard, but weren't allowed to grow one while on working duty (that was just classed as unshaven and not permitted), so had to grow it whilst on leave? |

Application to grow, then 2 week grace period to grow it followed by inspection to ensure it meets the minimum requirements. |

That is why I keep mine to a fashionable stubble.I have a magnificent Tache though.
