Thank you. Yeah the emergency services have taken quite some flack in recent years from our so called caring government. The thing that annoys me is all the idiots sat in parliament that are ravaging the public sector and milking it dry all call the same number in an emergency. Hypocrisy of the highest order. In my humble opinion of course. |

An awful lot to learn. About a years training in total. Most folk think it's only a few levers and buttons. "It doesn't even have a steering wheel." But they know nowt. I went train driving from the bank. A very common move but so is emergency services and prison officers to the railway. Don't know why but it seems happen an awful lot. Good luck with it all. An interest in trains will definitely help as your not starting from ground zero. You will have at least some basic knowledge. It's a long road and your head will spin at times but stick with it as the end result is a fantastic job with the best office view ever! |

I half heartedly tried for a job not long back because the stress of my job was getting me down.. I'm not saying it doesn't have its own stresses but when I'm on my way in to Leeds with a day from hell ahead I think I d rather be driving than driven. Plus I like trains, tracks railway architecture.. |

It’s not all about money though as I’d grown very despondent my previous occupation. I needed a fresh start. How do you find it? It's a great job when everything is going well. When things have gone tits up and Joe public holds you and you alone responsible it's not so good. And sometimes there is no reasoning with them. Example: A person has sadly been hit by a train in front of the one I was driving. It takes some time to deal with (police, ambulance and paramedics and coroners) and you've just got to sit there as you just can't turn around. Most passengers are sympathetic and understand. One says it's bloody ridiculous that he can't get to work and can't we get things moving and just drive over the body as it's probably well dead by now. They can clean it up at the end of the day when no one can be inconvenienced. I kid you not! |

I have seen similar to that at RTC’s with road closures and angry motorists so I know the score regarding that. |

I don't mean your example above which is daft by anyones standard. We have a train from Leeds to Manchester via Brighouse once an hour. At 5.20 pm the busiest train, almost half the time it is 2 carriages. people cannot get on in even in Leeds the start of the journey. I have to wait an hour till the next one which will be 4 carriages and half empty. Its no ones fault. No ones interested its not their fault. It drives you mad. I really could go on for ever. Then to add insult to injury they now claim if you get on at Brighouse and pay the fuckin conductor, whose job it is to collect fares, they will charge you 20 quid for not having a ticket...and they put the machine on the opposite platform from the car park and probably 80 per cent of travellers. The trains are bloody freezing in the morning and about 40 years old. Anyone you speak to says its not their fault. and it isn't. But whose fault is it? The frustration..cancelled because of a fault or no staff ..100s of people delayed getting to work..meetings organised, expensive child care..The trains shouldn't have a fault., or only very rarely. I know its investment and I know its not the crews fault but the faceless twats making a fortune out of it hiding somewhere...it makes you want to scream. |

Make of it what you will as I’ve mentioned previously. However, I compared a payslip from Aug 2008 till August 2019 and the difference in pay is £80. So firefighters where I worked have had an £80 pay rise in 11 years. With a brand new family to think about my hand was forced to look for better payed jobs. |

However, I compared a payslip from Aug 2008 till August 2019 and the difference in pay is £80. So firefighters where I worked have had an £80 pay rise in 11 years. With a brand new family to think about my hand was forced to look for better payed jobs. Unfortunately for many years now the government have had an agenda to dismantle public services and their pay especially the fire service, the worst thing is they are trying to give the impression that things are changing and money is being put back in now , which I believe is complete rubbish when talking about the fire service. Such a shame and probably a wise choice getting out. Good luck to you sir and your family anyway and a big thankyou from me for doing your little bit in the fire service. TFL London tube drivers ARE very well paid, over £50K a year basic on days for "normal" working hours, not 60+ like a wagon driver, plus free travel for them and a partner, pension available from age 50 and ( I think ) 8 weeks paid holiday. |
