Used to see Le Tissier around all the time at uni. I lived on the same road as The Dell Would have been interesting how he would have coped at a bigger club. I was out in the garden on his final game. Never forget the noise when he smashed in his last goal. Knew something special had just happened. Not to be pedantic, but his last goal was the winner in the final game at The Dell vs Arsenal in 2001, and his last game was an unceremonious eight-minute cameo vs West Ham the following season at St Mary's. It would have been beautiful if he'd retired on a high after Arsenal, but alas, he didn't. Happy to be corrected. Strong knowledge

Oleg Salenko. Scored 6 goals in 8 appearances for Russia, including 5 in his final game, against Cameroon at the 1994 World Cup, but never won another cap. Probably political, due to Salenko's Ukrainian ancestry, after the break-up of the USSR.

I appreciate there are a few "wildcards" on the list but Mark Noble, come on, he is average PL at best! Better than some who have gained caps, Huddlestone and Livermore being 2

David Nugent & Franny Jeffers = 1 cap, 1 goal.
How could we have dropped them?!?

Colin hendry. A decent amount of international caps, but didn't start playing for Scotland til his late 20's. Could and should have had many More. A true warrior of the game. Gascoigne, again decent amount, should have had more.

Without looking I guessed 60...then looked....66. Its a fair number even though he was world class. The 8 I listed don't have 60 between them! There was Hudson and Tony Currie...all the mavericks who the FA despised. Scholes opted to retire from international football early too a lot of people think due to pressure from Fergie

Shilton got about 30 too many. Crazy to think that Phil Neville got more than Gazza & Glen Hoddle. Emile Heskey got more than Jimmy Greaves. Darren Bent scored four times more goals for England than Andy Cole did. Didn't Shilton and Clemence play alternate games for England?

Great keeper, he just shouldn’t have been number 1 by Italia 90.
Still, every time he tweets nonsense about Brexit I love Maradonna a little bit more!

Erik Meijer only ever played for the Netherlands once. The 6-0 thrashing of San Marino in 1993. Who? This is a wild guess, but I suspect he played for Liverpool.

Peter Beardsley only got 59 caps for England. Thought he would have had more.

It was Chris 'Always beaten on the near post (and the opposition know this so they instruct their strikers to do exactly that)' Woods, and Dave Beasant. Might've been a different story if they'd have put Beasant on for the pens. But, I'm not sure that was the done thing in 1990.

Peter Shilton. Clemence should never have been selected when he was fit I'd go the other way but then again I blame him for us not winning the 86 and 90 WC's and for being a Tory gobshite

We expected the likes of De Bruyne to boss things but Noble was brilliant that day. Made me eat my words, that's for sure 😂

Came very close when he was at Ipswich. Didn't he come second for the golden boot in their first PL season? Of course some at HTFC thought he was "a depreciating asset". 😣

The fact Hoddle only got 53 caps is ludicrous and i always thought McManaman should have had more than the 30ish he did get. Michael Carrick, granted had a fair amount of injuries but 34 caps doesn't seem enough either. Les Ferdinand only got 17 caps which i thought would have been a lot more
To go old school, how did Howard Kendall, Billy Bonds and Jimmy Case never play for England??

Might've been a different story if they'd have put Beasant on for the pens. But, I'm not sure that was the done thing in 1990. The Beasant pens thing is oddly, a much talked about myth. I presume someone came up with the idea by the time that the entire squad was available to come on as subs (so 94 or 98?) but back in 1990 there were limited named subs and Beasant wasn't one for this match! englandmemories.com/2015/07/04/the-dave-beasant-myth-at-italia-90/#:~:text=On%20the%2025th%20anniversary%20of,Beasant%20for%20the%20shoot%2Dout. Also quite interesting on a related note is that Robson had apparently promised Woods and Beasant a game in the 3rd place play off but both keepers claim that Shilton refused to step down as wanted a final match to end his career on. He then made an absolute balls up in that game too.

Alan Shearer always speaks highly about Ferdinand and was disappointed when he left Newcastle. He was awesome in the air and another who played at a time when England had a number of quality strikers to pick from. Thunderous shot as well.

I always liked Les. 40ish goals in 60 games at Newcastle would suggest his banjo playing wasn’t as bad as you think. Certainly better than Heskeys 60+ caps.
