Too young to see him play live, I loved watching Saint and Greavsie as a youth, I don't know what was on the other channel as it was this we watched every Saturday before going to our games.
If it was still on the pre program " you may be upset offended or find something you dslike blah blah " warning would be as long as the program.

I remember a goal of his featured on a VHS I watched repeatedly ad nauseam as a kid "101 Great Goals" and I remember being annoyed as the throw in that started the move was clearly a foul throw.

Like these have been eradicated from the modern game. Not. One. Bit. They really grind my gears. Grrrrr!!!

Before my time sadly, but from what I’ve read arguably the greatest English goal scorer of all time. I’ve seen you’ve put last professional game, I do remember him turning out for Barnet in the late 70s so still in the Conference and amateur? He was deep into his alcoholism at the time and I recall something about him being tackled (while with Barnet) and the impact opened his thigh and a load of “plastic beads” that had been implanted to help him stop drinking spilled out onto the pitch.

He dropped into non-league to play for Brentwood, Chelmsford, Barnet and Woodford Town because he knew that his body wasn't up to FL standard any more. (Wikipedia)

My first memory of Jimmy Greaves is on the back of an England versus Germany schools international programme April 25th 1959. He was a 19 year old Chelsea player advertising Bovril. I was there, i believe we won 2-1. Couple of names on the England schools team sheet. Martin Peters Dagenham and Chris Lawler Liverpool. Captain. Germany Wolfgang Overath. Ssv, Siegburg.

He had a fantastic goalscoring ratio. 422 goals in 602 games as a professional, with the majority being for Spurs & Chelsea.

I have a Chelsea v. Town programme from the mid 50s (sorry, I can't be bothered to retrieve it from its box in the loft to check the precise date) which carries a very small feature announcing that they have just signed James Grieves (yes, mis-spelled like that). I can't remember whether it was as an apprentice or on professional terms.

Top, top bloke, Greavesy! Gutted that he didn't win us the World Cup in '66, saw him score his 300th goal v Burnley in 1968, watch his last game for Spurs (I think) v Bradford P.A. in F A Cup, about 1970/71? Watched him play for Chelmsford City but even then he was so clearly miles ahead of every other player on the pitch. He played a Charity Game at my club in 1972/3 ish. My Hero. I bloody love the man!! Edit - Thanks, Frankiesleftpeg

Just watched the documentary on Sky about Denis Law, interesting interview with Kevin MCHale and film from the period. The question is - Who, Greavsie or Law, was the greatest finisher?

I’m assuming you went to the FA Cup 3rd Round replay at White Hart Lane where Spurs beat Bradford City 5-0 in January 1970? I went to the first game at Valley Parade. Greaves hit the post in the first minute then scored in the third minute. Spurs were two up after 11 minutes, but Bradford City were level by the 32nd minute and were unlucky not to win. Ended 2-2. Absolutely superb game in front of 22,236.

You could have posted this on that thread where you put Football League Review questions where Epsom comes along and gives everybody 5 minute to answer before coming along and posting the answer

Law laked at Leeds road, so it's Law!! :-) That made me smile, thinking back to Richard Logan, apparently on his first day of training he turned up at Leeds Road in a tatty old Ford Escort van with bags of sand and cement on board, as he made his way to the players entrance the commissioner stopped him only to be told “It’s alright, I’m one of t’lakers.” Can’t imagine Ronaldo or Messi either being challenged or responding in quite the same way.

Sometimes football from yesteryear looks a bit slow and laboured. This still looks phenomenal:

Sorry, the Law documentary is on Netflix, definitely worth a watch. For what is worth, I would rate Jimmy Greaves as the greatest goal scorer I ever saw.

Showed the photo of Greaves & Kane here in Spain to a Colombian friend, he lives here now but for the last 25 years he lived in London and when he moved to London became a Spurs fan because of Ossy Ardilles and Ricky Villa. I knew of course he would recognise Harry Kane but didn’t think he’d know Jimmy Greaves, bearing in mind he didn’t come to the U.K. until the late 90’s but on the contrary he actually named Sir Jimmy Greaves first, Spurs Legend. He also said if he couldn’t go to watch Spurs he used to go to Barnet and said the supporters bar was full of photographs and memorabilia of Greaves at Underhill. He’d even taken to watching old episodes of Saint & Greavsie on line, it finished on tv before he came to the country, but I think it shows the power of a great former player - I wonder how he’s regarded in Italy given his very brief stint with AC - 12 games and 9 goals, in arguably the most strong defensive league in the world. One last one, and it made me laugh, when Jose, my Colombian Spurs mate, arrived in England, he spoke a little English (he’s fluent now) and when he started work was introduced by his boss to 15 or so blokes as a new colleague and from the first minute they all called him Manuel, at first he tried to correct their “mistake” No it’s Jose, not Manuel but soon found out about Fawlty Towers, got the joke and became a big fan of all 12 episodes!
