Huddersfield Town’s 2-0 defeat at Derby County on Tuesday, 23 February 2021 was disappointing and unexpected after the tremendous win over Swansea City just three days earlier. Though, perhaps, it should not have occasioned surprise in the light of our history at Pride Park. The last win we achieved there was on 30 November 1957. Since then we now have a 0-4-21 away record in all competitions! This was a disappointing game in which the Terriers registered just one shot on target. In the absence of Jonathan Hogg, with a calf injury, no-one stepped up to take the role of midfield general and the team looked rudderless and unmotivated, particularly after the break. Ryan Schofield is going through a crisis of confidence, and looks fearful when surrounded by opposition players or when confronted with a cross, and this uncertainty spread throughout the defence. It would be an act of kindness to drop him for the time being.
Because of this result, Town go into the next round of Championship fixtures having dropped to 19th in the division with 36 points from 32 games. We are now seven points above the drop zone, though both our South Yorkshire fellow strugglers each have two matches in hand.
On Saturday, 27 February 2021, KO 15:00, we continue our league campaign away at Preston North End. This match will be purchasable on iFollow for £10 but it will not be free to season card holders. It will not be on the Sky Sports Football red button. The referee selected for this match is James Linington.
Huddersfield have a terrible history in Preston. The last win we achieved there was on 10 November 1969. Since then we have a 0-6-10 away record in all competitions! Our last clash at Deepdale was on 9 November 2019 when we lost 3-1, under Danny Cowley. Referee Geoff Eltringham failed to stop the hosts playing, what might euphemistically be called an over-physical game, from start to finish. Tommy Elphick was forced off after just 20 minutes following a late challenge from Ryan Ledson that may have ended his career.
We last played Preston, in the reverse encounter, on 24 October 2020 when we lost 2-1 at the John Smith’s Stadium. Fraizer Campbell gave the hosts an early lead but PNE scored twice, after the break, to take all the points. The Terriers’ misery was compounded when Naby Sarr was sent off late on for pulling back Emil Riis Jakobsen, with the striker through on goal, just past the halfway line.
In 2019-20, PNE finished the Championship in 9th place, four points off the Play-offs. This season, they disposed of Mansfield Town and Derby County, in the Carabao Cup, before losing at home to Brighton in the 3rd round. They were thrashed 4-1 in the FA Cup 3rd Round, at Wycombe Wanderers.
Following their 4-0 loss at Cardiff City, on 20 February, the Lilywhites are in 16th place in the Championship with 39 points from their 31 matches, three points and three places ahead of Town with Wednesday’s game at home to Queens Park Rangers in hand.
Deepdale is another ground where the pickings are sparse, and no doubt Alex Neil will put out a physical side with the intention to bully us. Deferring any bet until the team is announced would be prudent. I think that Jonathan Hogg‘s fitness could be central to the result. If he misses again then I think it will certainly be another defeat; if he plays, it is conceptually possible that we might scramble a draw!
Current PP odds: Town: 15/8 Draw: 21/10 Preston: 13/10

Last time out at Preston... Town’s excellent seven game unbeaten run came to an end at high-flying Preston on 9th November, 2020. New manager Danny Cowley had won the coveted Manager of the Month award only a day previously, but a combination of inept play – again! – and some downright atrocious refereeing saw Town capitulate all too easily. See the entire season's videos HERE.

It’s so so sad that when I vote on the poll for each match thread the revelation is unanimously a loss 😔

Every time I see Preston, I’m amazed at how much they get away with. Very physical and a real nasty streak, but referees seem reluctant to send them off. More likely one of our players will react and see red.

Alex Neil will know that if they sit deep and let us have the ball then they will get the chances they need to beat us. Only way that changes is if Neil has a brain fart Nd tries to attack us or if Carlos comes up with a fresh idea. I'd get REG in for this and give Keogh a rest.

I find it hard to believe that a team/players can put in two totally different performances in four days.
It just goes to show v Swansea what these players/team are capable of and then it comes down to the manager who is only as good as his results.
The team/players v Derby looked totally de motivated where as they raised their game and were up for it v Swansea Whats going on at this club

3-0 to Preston.
They're a Big physical side who will bully us out of the game. They'll press us high up the pitch causing us to move the ball backwards and force a few errors by our defence. Then one of their tactical things they use a lot of is switching the ball from the full back to the opposite wing, very quickly. With our weakness at left back whoever plays there will have a job on. Especially if we play three at the back with our fullbacks pushed forward, that leaves a lot of space to hit the ball into.

10th November 1969 - Town's last win at Deepdale. I was at that game. Remember coming home from school and my dad saying come on, we're going to the match. What a season!

And the added “benefit “ for them is the knowledge that putting in multiple crosses close to our keeper will inevitably lead to chances.

we will have one chance in the first 10 minutes of the game before having lots of possession with zero shots on target for the rest of it.
Lose and the Manager has to go. Time is up.

Our away form is abysmal. Our record against Preston away is even worse. We will pick up more injuries. It would be just like Town in the circumstances to win 1-0, then lose at home to Birmingham.

Serious question guys. If we would of shown some ambition and we loaned Charlie Austin instead of qpr getting him
Would we be in this position?
I understand some fans don't like him however he does know where the net is

I understand some fans don't like him however he does know where the net is You see this highlights the issue I’ve raised previously. Our coach does not see value in playing an out and out striker. Austin or anyone similar would not be capable of running around like Campbell has to do. Even Steve Austin would find it difficult .

Surely Hodgkinson realises the difference in income in both championship and first division but soon will unless he pulls his finger out
What is important is that the teams around us loose on Wednesday night as think the three relegated clubs will be Wycombe ,Birmingham and Wednesday

How it's better to have points on the board as it were. That is true, however this is Town and we know improbable scenarios and town go together like Rhubarb and Custard.

watching Preston v QPR definatley beatable, just need Carlos to use John Barnes tactics, can someone email him a copy?
You've got to hold and give but do it at the right time You can be slow or fast but you must get to the line They'll always hit you and hurt you, defend and attack There's only one way to beat them, get round the back

last time out we were beaten by 10 minutes of defensive chaos. they weren't that good at all. but unless we change it up they don't have to be in order to win.
I really hope Carlos has been picking his brain for different ideas on how to beat teams that play a low block, as the team really doesn't know what to do when a team smothers them- Derby for example. Even if we lose I'd be happy just to see something in the way of new ideas

I'll be giving my new pressure washer a run out on Saturday. Give the car a good spring clean & blitz the paving in the back garden.
Has to be more fun than watching town pass the ball sideways & backwards for 90 minutes.
