By which you’d think they might say that season tickets won’t go on sale until the 21st of June at the very earliest, when the clear and complete picture is hopefully known about whether large outdoor seated events will be able to go ahead unrestricted or not?

this club needs a total reset from top to bottom. They wont need people to socially distance next season at this rate anyway as season ticket sales will be tiny.

I wonder if we will be marking our 40th anniversary of our last automatic promotion the season after?

'If' we can go to games as normal (no restrictions or social distancing) i still think we can clear 10,000 season tickets, season ticket sales by and large have been good over the years, admittedly some might not renew but i reckon numbers generally will still be good.

How do we stack up in the overall promotion stakes, via whatever means? There's always more successful clubs to follow?

Yep - I remember many Div 4 games at Leeds Road where there wasn’t anyone within 10 metres of our small group. Perhaps I wasn’t using the right deodorant?

There's always more successful clubs to follow? Does winning play offs equal success? I'm not sure, yeah you win promotion but you could finish 6th and still win promotion, even though you haven't accumulated more points than the 3rd place club. That's the rules, I know. There is only Blackpool who can equal our record of winning all 3 divisional play offs and only Blackpool that can match our play off appearances, in fact we might have the most play off appearances in total now, just makes us successful at play offs I guess.

Aye 4 play off final wins out of 5 in the years since that automatic promotion illustrates your point perfectly doesn’t it 🤭 For the size of our support, 3 of those play off victories were in the lower divisions (one at the 4th level , two at 3rd level). Personally enjoyed them possibly more than an automatic promotion. But for the size of our club to have spent a high proportion of those 40 years in the lower leagues and never gain automatic isn’t very good. I think it’s probably what’s made most of the older generation fans possibly a little more agitated with how we’ve blown our rise so quickly.

There is no other club in the country gone longer without an automatic promotion than Town. Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool, Spurs, Everton? Have they been in a position to win automatic promotion? No, obviously not. Even the lowly Rochdale have managed to win 2 automatic promotions during that period. Although both Manchester United and Tottenham both won automatic promotion in the 70's.

So your barometer of success is automatic promotion? Seems an odd way to berate the club you support? The play-offs are there for a purpose, all clubs know the rules. If they hadn't existed, do you think Wagner would have approached the last few games the other season differently, in the desire to secure third place?

The play offs were brought in to make things more exciting give clubs more to play for, keep interest for longer. They have been a good thing, don't get me wrong. Off course the barometer of success is winning automatic promotion, you don't say you got the FA Cup semi final and count it as success do you?

Recent wrong word, referring more to the poster who said 40 years . I’m getting old so 40 years is more relevant for me, and before you reply, I’m saying 40 years without automatic when most were spent in bottom leagues is very poor for a club our size.

I find your definition of success in this context, quite bizarre.

All I'm saying is that the plays widen the parameters for promotion, play offs are in effect stand alone cup ties, yeah you get promotion, owt can happen and it usually does, the best placed team doesn't always go on to win promotion. Ok to keep you happy we'll call it success then.

Winning the play offs is miles better than finishing 2nd surely? You can’t beat the drama and excitement of winning a play off final, even the L2 one brings amazing memories

From an excitement perspective we’ve had more than our fill because of the play offs.

I suspect they probably don't, the clubs don't make much more, the gate receipts are split by the clubs in the division, clubs will make on merchandise and flags are all that jazz. The Town play off wins have been great can't deny that.

Had the play-offs not existed, would we have put more into gaining that last auto promotion place using the old system & hence improved our number of autos? The play-offs drive a mentality with some clubs, where those who are guaranteed a place with 3-4 games to go, but where the autos are probably out of reach, they start to prepare for the knockout tournament, preserve their squads etc. I don't really buy into this avoidance of the 'form team'. To win the play-offs you have to beat 2 of the 3 teams in the competition anyway.

The year we lost in the playoffs we would have gone up automatically if the play offs didnt exist wouldnt we?
So OP is saying Rochdale is an example of a club more successful than us because it got promoted to st division for a season before being relegated again while we have been to wembley old an new, old Trafford and Cardiff for play off finals and had 2 seasons on the premier league during the same time.
But in then says Everton clearly more successful because they couldn't win promotion ?
Makes no sense
