I’m not having the best time of things at the moment but stuff like this really makes me give my head a shake because it goes way beyond the 56 who died!!!, I watched a documentary about it and I remember a boy being saved by his grandma but she didn’t make it out!!!
I think Yorath was manager and I think it still affects him to this day and it would never leave you I suppose much like Hillsborough although the way this ripped through the stand it’s amazing it was only 56!

There seemed to be a lot more than 7000 from Barnsley that day. I’ve only ever seen more away fans when Newcastle brought 16-17000 down in 1984. I agree, I was just putting a figure to it. That was the fullest I ever saw the open end. Man City had more than anyone else at Leeds Road...as well as the full open end they once had the corner section of the terrace by the corner flag I remember the pompey game very well when they had the cowshed end aswell...as a very young Town fan I remember throwing stones into the cowshed from the ginnel at the back of the cowshed...lol.

It's one of those "Where were you when..." moments. If I remember correctly we'ed just lost 2-0 at home against Swindon and one of the players had given my dad and I a ticket for the players' lounge. It came up on the TV. Having seen the footage afterwards it's one of the most horrific things you will ever see.

Yes it was portsmouth, and on the day of the other disaster (Hillsborough) four years later we played Chester city at home, won 3-1.

I was playing cricket that day and didn’t know anything about it until having a beer in the Coach and Six in Birstall that evening when we saw the tv.
Couldn’t believe what we were watching. I always used to sit in that stand when Town went to VP to avoid the bricks being thrown in the open end.

A friend of mine was in the stand that day. Sat almost at the back he made a split second decision to go forward rather than back. It saved his life, he made it on to the pitch with seconds to spare.

Agree with you on the open end. I recall Ben shaw size bottles flying over a wire fence that separated us and them. Amazed how nobody suffered serious injury.

It’s a sad day for sure. All death is hard to take , but there’s something particularly upsetting about these sorts of circumstances. People wishing loved ones a great afternoon out only for them never to return.
To those who died and those who miss them dearly, you’ll be in my thoughts today. Rest in peace.

I listened to a 2017 interview with Terry Yorath the other day, and he spoke at length about that day. Harrowing.
The footage of that day is awful, and the thought of all those people not returning from a match always brings me to tears.
Rivalries aside on a day like today, no matter what my thoughts are on Bradford City.
And of course, Peter Jackson was the captain that day, Trevor Cherry was manager and Terry Yorath, Terry Dolan and Bobby Campbell were all involved at the club at that time.
RIP to the 54 Bradford City supporters and the two Lincoln City supporters that lost their lives.

RIP to all who lost loved ones that fateful day. Wasent our stadium one of the first to be built with the implications of that day heavily inflicting the design? My dad was a fire safety officer for 28 years in Lincoln and I remember him doing countless safety briefs mentioning our stadium and showing the footage of the fire.

I was with around 12 lads working through the night at a bakery in Hillsborough, Sheffield. We got there around 4pm because Wendies were at home to WHU & didn't want to hit the traffic when news was filtering through about the fire at Valley Parade, we took the piss a bit from what we heard on the radio then later we all met in the canteen for supper/takeaways & we saw the pictures for the 1st time on tv, it was a pretty surreal moment when we realised the severity of what had happened, just about everyone left his food & the rest of the night was done in a very sombre mood........We all donated our wage from that night to the fund & the firm matched it, that summer the whole of football came together & even though the memories are going a bit that awful day remains very clear. RIP
