All other things being equal (i.e. ignoring salaries which don't concern me), I am not sure I have a strong keeper preference between any of Smithies, Ward, Lössl or Nicholls. At Championship level anyway. Lossl Nicholls Smithies Ward In that order. IMO. & Lossl isn't as good as he was by all accounts (although Ward has apparently improved). Considering the apathy with which the signing of MK Dons' reserve keeper was greeted (includng from myself), I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone (other than PuertoUK from the Examiner comments section) that doesn't think he's MASSIVELY exceeded expectations. I’d agree with that selection. However, I’d argue that none of them played a bigger part than Nicholls in terms of transforming confidence in our back line. In the good old days, when Tog read out our starting 11, the keeper always got a massive ovation - I think it’s time that Nicholls was greeted in the same way.

From about 10 minutes in of the game at Sheff Utd you could tell he was going to be a calming influence. Was constantly talking and the whole defence just looked better. More recently, when Blackpool scored their early goal, he wasn't ranting and raving but just walked almost up to the centre circle telling everyone to stay calm. Great character and great keeper.

Even allowing for improvment, the fact that a club was willing to pay £12m for Ward to sit on his arse says something about our preferences. Not sure what though! Some may say Leicester overpaid a tad, and others may say we haven't a clue! Or both.

Will he get to Super Stevie Francis level though I wonder....

Got to say Nicholls fast becoming my favourite current Town player. His time wasting does make me chuckle although can see opposition fans hating him for it. Reminds me of a keeper we’d have had 30-40 years ago, real no-nonsense character who seems to enjoy winding the opposition up with his antics. Just hope he doesn’t get injured or pick up too many yellows though cos our back up is gash.

I was going to say that with Ward you're buying potential as much as current ability, but then I checked & realised Nicholls is literally just a few months older than Ward.
