Just watching this now, whilst working, on youtube I've had the pleasure of Steve's company many times, and even played a round of golf with him a few years ago, but what a thoroughly good bloke he is - and his knowledge, memory, and passion is to behold. I'd recommend this 90 minutes to everyone - either on youtube or via their podcast Good work all round LINK

I’ve to go out at midday, but watched a wee snippet at the start. Looks like it’s gonna be a good listen / watch. I’m up late through the night so looking forward to it later. A great player who was there when I started out supporting HTAFC. Scored plenty goals as well.
Cheers for the info and Link mids !

A great player for town loved watching him play and his goal celebrations, have watched some of it and some good stories so far from his time with Mick Buxton

An incredible achievement.

From that, I'm still trying to fathom how on earth Steve Kindon came to play for Huddersfield Town. Bet it was the highlight of his career though The rumour was that the thing that clinched it was that the board offered to buy him a VW Jetta if he signed.

They earned nothing like today so they went down the leagues....he would still have seen us as a big club perhaps.

I remember Kindo signing for town right after the Rochdale game when we stuffed them 5-0 (or at least I think it was Rochdale it was along time ago He was just the sort of player to inspire the fans and team around him, his positivity just magic. When ever he played we went nuts cheering for him and he always played up to the crowd, just the sort of talisman we need now IMO. He was never the most skilful of players but once they put a ball over the top defenderes shit themselves when a 15 stone bloke with the speed of 100 mtr sprinter came hurtling towards them. I can still remember the 2-2 draw at Shef Utd as if it was yesterday, Kindo comes on and scores two in the last few minutes and we went nuts behind the goal. Mind you he missed another sitter and we should have won the gamne really but hey happy days and great memories of Buxtons Blue and White Army at away games. Kindon, Robins and Fletcher up front was one of the best lower league forward lines of all time IMO

A great away memory . Though I think Kindo was stretching the truth somewhat for suggesting it was on match of the day

It wasn't on national TV that night as Kinton said . There might have been some macklin commentary on the Sunday. Although if that's the case I'm sure it would have found its way to a dvd . Which I don't think it did ,

Which I don't think it did , It was definitely on the telly that weekend. I know for certain because I went to the game, ended up in the Sheffield end with my dad, left early at 2-0 down and had to watch the match highlights to see the goals that we only heard on the way back to the car! I’m also sure that I’ve seen Kindon’s goals from that game on a Town video/DVD. Maybe the Final Whistle 2? Also, from memory, I seem to remember that there was snow on the pitch in the first half - yet they used a white ball. By half time it had mostly been trodden into the mud - but the second half was played with an orange ball, making it difficult to see what was going on in both halves.

Yeah I think the goals were shown . Maybe a bit of coverage . But it wasn't on motd. My hunch is it was shown in the Sunday lunch ifv show . I bought the final whistle 2 and can't remember the goals on that but it's been a long time between drinks to be fair . That about the snow rings a bell though

I’ve no doubt that he did still see Town as a big club - but he does say in the interview that he was paid very well. Ultimately that will have been what swung his decision. However, it’s refreshing to hear that (certainly back then) that not all players were greedy mercenaries - as highlighted by his ‘volunteering’ to help out on the commercial side until his contract expired, once he knew he’d never play again.

That about the snow rings a bell though We never had Scottish TV when I started supporting Huddersfield Town (1980) and the little we seen of Town was on Match of the Day or The Big Match which we picked up from nearby Ireland. We also picked up highlights of their local part time teams both in the North and The Republic. Then in 1981 they put up transmitters here and we could get Scottish TV and Scottish football. Spoilt for choice we certainly were, long before Sky TV ever came on the scene. The local BBC footy programme was called Sportscene (still is) and the STV one was Scotsport. I’m not sure what the situation was in Yorkshire, maybe like us there would’ve been a local football highlights show on BBC and ITV Yorkshire TV and it may have been on that if there were such football programmes in England’s finest county back then.

I remember Emlyn Hughes talking about wages and saying that the most he ever got paid was the £500/wk he got when signing for Wolves in 1979. That was despite Captaining Liverpool to glory in the 70s and the 60-odd England caps he won.

Well, i went from £33 in 1978 to £20 a day in 1979 labouring on two brickies...and that was good money then. I know that in 1977 Town players were getting a £2 win bonus!!! £200 will not be far off the mark.

I remember Kindon at Rochdale away standing by the Rochdale keeper as he was going to clear the ball upfield and pointing upfield with one finger while he held the ball in the other hand and Kindon pretended to bite his finger The poor bloody keeper did not know what make of Kindon but he did no more pointing upfield when Kindo was near him. You would probably get sent off for that now ! I know the players were paid not much more than me working as a Carpet Weaver, we would often see two of more players in the carpark at some service station or other car sharing back from the game with a car no better than ours. They were always up for a chat and appreciated that we fans traveled long distance to away games even mid-week to cheer them on.

Not surprised...in 1977 my first job was £37 a week and that was nearly double my mates. You must have been a graduate going in to banking?!
