When did Hartlepool change their badge? Thought it was Mansfield for the first half.

I will imagine Torquay will feel hard done by, for me they had two perfectly good goals disallowed.

Good, too much Shithousery from the Torquay keeper Imagine scoring, saving a couple of penalties and losing. A ‘keeper.

Watched the shoot out, blimey they’re good to watch if you are a neutral, I’ve no axe to grind with Torquay but was rooting for Hartlepool as I’ve a mate who is a Poolie, sadly he went into hospital just this week due to Alzheimer’s and won’t recognise the achievement or be aware they’ve reclaimed league status.
Edit - we’ve just phoned his wife (she and both daughters have zero interest in the football) but they are going to give him the good news, although it probably won’t mean a lot.

When did Hartlepool change their badge? Thought it was Mansfield for the first half. They had that on the front of the programme when I first went in the mid 70s, they’ve used the stag a lot (they share our 1908 formation) they’ve used the ship steering wheel for about 20 years, I think they went back to the old new one about 2/3 years ago.

Fair enough. I've only known the ship's wheel. Seems more fitting than a Stag given the location. A good quiz question is 'What did Hartlepool lose whilst Brian Clough was manager?' The answer is the 'S'. They were known as Hartlepools United until then.

He had connections with the area, most people know he was a demon centre forward at nearby Middlesbrough but he cut his teeth at non league Billingham, my mate saw him at Hartlepool, said even then he was a character, got involved in all the day to day running of the club, painting the stands, cutting the grass, even driving the team coach and first appointed Peter Taylor as his assistant. I suppose Derby and Forest owe a bit of gratitude to the Monkey Hangers for getting him off on the right footing and when fans complain that a manager picks his favourite, worth noting that John McGovern was signed by them at Hartlepool, then Derby, got 4 games in for Beeston before teaming up again at Forest.

Not certain, but I think that was because the club was representing both Hartlepool and West Hartlepool.

I’d imagine Jeff Stelling will be a happy chappy today. I remember a few years ago when Heartlepool were on the brink of going out of The Football League, he suddenly while live on Sky Soccer Saturday, exploded and started to rant and rave about the manager and chairman and demanded them to resign. We all stopped our conversation and drinking in the pub, to see what was going on with all his passionate concern for The Pools. Nothing for or against Torquay or Heartlepool. A dramatic match and penalty shoot out brings the curtain down on a dramatic domestic season. Commiserations to The Gulls and Congratulations to The Pools !

Congrats to Hartlepool. Nothing against either club, both former EFL clubs, so happy to have either of them back. For anyone asking about the new(ish) "hart & pool" badge, this case study covers it.

Just had to watch that alongside my heavily pregnant Hartlepool supporting missus. Thankfully we've managed to get through it without a trip to the hospital.

He was on the pitch celebrating with the players after the game Saw him, probably 8 or 9 years ago now at Rownhams Services on the M27 in Hampshire, it was about 6.30pm, I was parking up for the night in my wagon and he was sat, drinking a coffeee with pages and pages of handwritinen notes for that weekends fixtures on his table, I passed by intending to just say Hello but he responded and we got talking, basically as one football fan to another but when he knew I’d a mate who followed his beloved Hartlepool he was genuinely chuffed and was happy to sign a note for me to pass on, from “One Poolie to another” I always speak as I find and I found him to be a nice bloke, so that’s two Hartlepool fans I’m pleased for today - less so the bastards that once chased me into the train station wielding a kitchen knife when we lost 3-2, last away game of the season in 1978, fortunately I ran round the corner and bumped straight into a copper !

I dunno, I bloody hated having to go to Old Trafford despite it being nearer than Wembley, and that was before Clark decided to go without Rhodes in the XI It was a Godsend not having far to travel home after the result though! Could have driven home from Bristol quite ker than the hours it took to get out of Manchester. Awful day, dreadful venue.

Shame my local team lost as would have been promoted had they not messed up big time in the run in to Sutton
I moved down to live in Devon in 1980 after coming down for the Town game in December 1979 but thats another story.
Most of my mates are very passionate Torquay supporters and they still talk today about that wonder goal town scored v Torquay which i think was from Carrs .
Also they constantly remind me how they pipped us from promotion in around 2003 after the cock up at Cheltenham and also Torquays record crowd was v Huddersfield
Lovely place for a holiday if you cannot go abroad and always been seriously into match fishing on amazing Tench /carp lakes in the area

My mum and step-dad were regular studio audience members down on Kirkstall Road when Countdown was filmed there. Being non-football fans, they had no idea who Jeff Stelling was when he took over from Des O'Connor. Suffice to say, they would agree with your assessment of him - they said he was always very friendly with the audience (in marked contrast to other hosts of the same programme).
