Not affecting Huddersfield Town this or sadly ever likely to, but UEFA have jettisoned the away goals rule from next season. Cue more extra time and penalty shoot drama then, though the away goal rule had many dramas of it’s own in a vastly different way.
Not sure how long away goals wins have been prevalent in Europe but I’ve a mate whose a huge Celtic fan and statical anorak and he said The Hoops won a two legged tie on the toss of a coin against Benfica in 1969/70 or thereabouts ! Just another way of football competition rules changing.
I think after that Celtic drew Leeds and beat them in the semi final. It really would’ve sickened Leeds if The Hoops had beaten them that way. Funny as it would be to see Leeds lose that way, in all fairness it was no way to decide football matches at any level...

Like you say, more games going into extra time. Klopp won’t be happy.

More games going into extra time which will benefit the team at home 2nd. Someone on twitter did some analysis a while back and showed that the away goals rule actually evened it up

Never a fan. Can see the argument from the other side, and its had its moments in away games..but Id prefer clubs to do their attacking on their home patch infront of their fans. Score a hatful at home and have the team try outscore you in the second leg
Instead you generally end up with boring first leg with the home team trying to keep a clean sheet where its easier to, then if they manage that chances are they set up solid in the away game hoping to nick one on the counter.
Plus i'm a fan of pens personally

So many over the years to reminisce about and always a good watch on the iPad from time to time. That said I was too nervous to follow the Reading ones or even the match. Glad they’ve not gone with the silver goal / golden goal pantomime though as I didn’t like that idea... even though Huddersfield Town were the first club in the UK to win a match that way in that cup tie v Lincoln City. Yet another piece of important football history in favour of HTAFC. !

Think they should scrap extra time rather than the away goals rule myself. Away goals is fair, extra time isn't.
Gives the home side in 2nd leg the advantage of more game time on their pitch. And that extra 30 minutes is usually turgid to watch anyway.
I remember when we played Blackburn in the league cup back in about 94. They were a top PL side with shearer up front, we were in Div 3.
1-1 at ours, then after 90 mins at Ewood it was 3-3 ( I think) .
At that point we should have gone through on away goals, both having had 90 mins at home. But no, they get an extra 30 mins at home and win. Always struck me as unfair.

'fair' is that at the end of the day it comes down to 'luck of the draw' cup footy. Trying to balance it out at (to me) the detriment of the football played seems daft. Are single tie domestic cup rounds unfair and in need of some sort of handicap? or do you just take the draw as it is? Agree on scrapping extra time though.

Think its fair if you did away with extra time.. in that both sides have had 90 minutes at home over the 2 legs.
Guess the idea behind away goals was to stop away teams just parking the bus, particularly in first legs. No idea if its made any difference though.

Shearer equalised last minute in that first leg if I remember.

Looks like the scrapping of the away goals rule has snared it’s first victim ! Last week CFR Cluj beat Borac Banja Luka 3-1. In the return Leg Borac Banja Luka win 2-0 in ninety minutes and would’ve been through on away goals but under the scrapping of the away goals it went to extra time and Cluj took advantage of the rule change and nicked one to progress. Always changes and good I guess if they work out in your favour. Some names there too. Cluj reminds me of an old Scottish slang for the Loo called ‘Cludgee’ !
And Borac Banja Luka... jeez oh some name that, but definitely a team that was on teletext tonight (West Island Terrier is 100% sober tonight) !!!!

When I was a kid we had corners to decide drawn games.. Cant remember what happened if you had the same number of corners, I'm very old.
To get a corner does mean some attacking intent...
Maybe pens if corners are the same, give the most attacking side over the 90 minutes a first advantage..

When Italy won their first Euro title in 1968, I think their semi-final which had finished 0-0 (v USSR?) was decided by the toss of a coin.
