Whole match on Channel 4 now. Bollocks - West Germany have scored! I was only 3 for that one but did get to see the vast majority of them replay at Elland Road in 1985 for a fundraiser for the Bradford fire appeal, I know England won, again, was it 6-4 ? and I’m sure Hurst got another hat trick, nice to be able to say I saw the Charltons, Hurst, Ball, Peters and our own Ray Wilson with plastic knee caps did the first 5 minutes, Overath and Uwe Seeler (Hello Sailor?) for West Germany. The crowd was only 20,000 or so but crowds were smaller back then, for a number of reasons.

I was 5 years old. I remember my dad hired a television to watch the game from a rental shop. A tiny black and white affair. I think we liked it so much we kept the rental going. I also went and bought the commemorative stamp from the post office which started my obsession with philately. I can't recall many memories from the game itself oddly. I do however, remember being obsessed with the next world cup in 1970 thinking we would stroll it. For the quarter final game against Germany, we were on holiday in Scarborough. I had to go and lie in the sand next to a strange man who was listening on the radio and keep giving my dad updates. When we went 2-0 up he said, its in the bag son, you can stop pestering that man. !!!! FFS.

If they had VAR back then, I wonder if they'd have finished checking whether it was over the line or not by now?

I was 11, and we had just spent the week at Weston-super-Mare, a bloody performance in its own right, dad's old Morris 1000 and no motorways! Anyhow, I remember asking the landlady of the b&b if we could watch the semi final v Portugal. It was not very popular, I think she had to dust the tv down and give it a bang to get it going. The day of the final, we left early to head to stay with my uncle and auntie in Oxfordshire, and we watched the final there. Then all the adults cleared off to the pub leaving me and brother on our own! 😆

What can you say ? I don’t think they sold out and they weren’t expensive, still it was deep into darkest Beeston so dare I say it was probably par for the course. PS did Hurst get another 3 ?

I watched quite a bit of it recently and couldn't believe how ponderous it was considering the score.

If they had VAR back then, I wonder if they'd have finished checking whether it was over the line or not by now? Is there a single England fan out there that genuinely thinks it crossed the line ? I know the players said look at Roger Hunt, he didn’t go for it because he knew but surely he didn’t go for it because he couldn’t score ?

I watched the 1990 Germany semi again last year in full -memories are often so wrong -they battered us first half and should have been three up.We deservedly lost and I always thought wa4ching it with my kids on holiday in portugal we were unlucky But as per the thread the 66 final looks so slow now

Someone mentioned 'Goal' which reminded me how much I used to enjoy watching the 'official films' of world cups shot in full colour on 35mm film, gave the tournaments an extra layer of drama. They used to show some of them in the days leading up to a new WC but you don't see them on as much now.

It’s become a bit of a cliche now, but the liner who confirmed “the goal” was Russian. What went through his mind as the ball bounced off the bar and landed on the goal line? The siege of Stalingrad? Twenty eight million dead comrades? The KGB unit waiting his return if he got it wrong? Keep politics out of sport? Can someone let me know how that goes?

Tofiq Barahmov, technically Azerbaijani rather than Russian but a Soviet either way, passed away nearly 30 years ago. I take it you didn’t think it crossed the line either, not yet heard from anyone who does, with a straight face anyway.

It's the crowd that amazes me, it's July and they all have big coats and jackets on, I can't see anyone with short sleeves on.

Haven't seen Goal for about 40 odd years, but I can vividly recall the slow motion takes of Pele being hacked all over the place by Hungary and Portugal to ensure elimination in their group if memory serves!

Enjoyed watching that and reminded me of a brilliant moment a few years ago.
Ray Wilson and his family sat just in front of me and at one Tuesday night game v Crystal Palace, we scored a late winner. Ray turned to me and we both celebrated the goal together.
What a privilege.

I have a load of old pics of Dewsbury and I don't think a single one of them contains anyone who's not wearing an overcoat (usually a hat too). for eg. 'A hot summer's day in Dewsbury, 1962' - Notice that the town hall was a lovel shade of black in those days, along with all the other Yorkshire stone buildings.

I can see why the Lino thought it had ( putting aside any anti German sentiment ). Theres various angles of it and in one it does actually look over. But on others it looks on the line. There again, there was a clear handball in one of Germany's goals ( 2nd one I think ) by Haller that the ref missed, so maybe it evened itself out. Bit like the other night. was it a pen?.. no not really. was it a free kick that they scored from? No not really Was it a pen when Kane was fouled in the 2nd half and the ref gave Denmark the free kick instead? Yes..Looked a stone wall pen to me. people will remember the pen from that game but the dodgy game changing decisions actually favoured Denmark overall IMO.

Ray turned to me and we both celebrated the goal together. What a privilege. I briefly met Ray a few years ago on Battyeford football pitches where he'd been watching his grandkid playing one Sunday afternoon. He was just walking along on his own back to the carpark and I had one of those moments where you just can't ignore it. Had to shake the hand of a World Cup winner and he was very obliging and we had a quick chat. Just a little moment in life but one I feel privileged to have had.
