Definitely loads up in North Notts (practically every town around Mansfield is a pit town), but there were a fair few in and around Nottingham too (Bestwood, Gedling, Wollaton, Clifton, Cinderhill etc.) Wollaton and Clifton - really? East Leake and Gotham were originally mining villages but it was Gypsum rather than coal.

Wollaton Colliery was somewhere by the existing railway line, and Clifton was actually north of the river next to Wilford Power Station. Interesting about East Leake and Gotham, I didn't know that! Mind you, I don't know much about south of the Trent. I'm fairly certain Cotgrave Country Park was a pit (as most Country Parks round here were!)

You're correct about Wollaton and Clifton both closed in the 1960's (I can blame you for a late night googling Nottinghamshire coal mines ). Re East Leake there is still a Gypsum mine here (which apparently is expanding) the "originally" bit relates to the fact the village has grown massively & the proportion working at the mine or British Gypsum must have fallen considerably. Gotham mine was shut some time post 1987/88. The only mine I've ever been down (& NOTHING like the images you have of a coal mine). I dislike Nottingham Forest but I don't dislike the area.

Just as we were hitting a rich seam of form. I keep digging but cannot come up with anything, so I will have to coal it a day. Mined how you go.

I've spent some happy afternoons on the platforms at Rushcliffe Halt without knowing what that works next door was!

Was ironic that the leader of the Notts miners Neil Greatrex turned out to be a crook, getting sent down for nicking 150k of his "democratic Union of mineworkers" dough And the shut their pits as well after they worked the strike. Really nothing to brag about. In fact a complete embarrassment for them
