The greatest striker I ever saw play, a naturally gifted and instinctive finisher. Jimmy Greaves’s stats are unbelievable, and what joy Saint and Greavsie brought to Saturdays.

Well before my time, but his goal record speaks for itself.
RIP Greavsie

Never saw him play, before my time.
I loved him on Saint and Greavsie. Far better than the anodyne football programmes you get these days.
RIP Greavsie 👏

RIP - the Great Jimmy Greaves, amazing goal scoring stats, what he be worth in today's football, £200 million? Like many others loved Saint & Greavsie.

RIP Jimmy, a truly great goal scorer, and a perfect gent with a great sense of humour. I am old enough to have seen him and did, even at Tottenham one time.

124 Division One goals in 157 games by the time he was 21, before he turned professional he scored 122 goals in one season for the Chelsea youth side in the '56-57 season! iirc even that [redacted] at Man Utd didn't break his "top five leagues of Europe" goals record until 2017.

A player that fully earned the title "Legend". But for injury he would probably have been a world cup winner. A sad loss for the football world. RIP Jimmy

Great show as a kid was Saint and Greavsie. RIP Jimmy, the man upstairs clearly needs a new striker.

Giant of the game, brilliant goal scorer and my schoolboy hero.
Bloody shame, but it's a good innings.
Spurs v Chelsea is a fitting tribute.
RIP Jim

Never saw the man play , but what a legend ! You just have to watch at some of the goals he ever scored! some say he would be worth £200 million if he was in his twenties today , and I would not disagree , RIP Uncle Jimmy.

I might have seen him play... If he was in the WHU team that drew 1-1 at Leeds Road in September 1970, then it's a "yes" from me. Otherwise...

I might have seen him play... If he was in the WHU team that drew 1-1 at Leeds Road in September 1970, then it's a "yes" from me. Otherwise... We were looking forward to seeing him play in that game. But: From (disappointed) memory I'm pretty sure that he didn't turn out in that game. "Injured." We saw him a few seasons previously (Spurs) at Elland Road - and he was pretty sharp. One of the greats. RIP

He wasn't, although he played in most of the matches up to that game. I think that the only time he played against us was the last match of that season when we won 1-0. I remember only that Greaves was playing and that Jimmy Lawson scored from close range into one of those funny little nets at Upton Park. At the Olympic Stadium in 2017, when we lost 2-0, I met a Town fan who had been at that 1971 match, so that's two of us who've seen him play against us (plus David Taylor I would expect).

The first time I saw Jimmy Greaves play was at Valley Parade for Spurs in a magnificent FA Cup 3rd Round game in January 1970. He hit the post in the first minute and scored two minutes later. Spurs were two up after 11 minutes, but City got it back to 2-2, losing the replay 5-0.

Natural..often never looked at the goal.
Saint and greaves, football punditry with a smile and not taking themselves too seriously all the time.
From an era I remember and that I can watch, over and over.
Everybody seemed to want to play towards the opponents goal no matter the opponent or the score.
Proper legend Jimmy ...

Very sad news indeed and RIP Jimmy and deepest sympathy to his friends and family circle..
His passing away had me reminiscing today of childhood memories with On the Ball then Saint & Greavsie on firstly Ulster tv then STV.. Saturday morning down to the shop for The Shoot magazine to see where Town were in the League and the fixtures, then see if there were any HTAFC features or posters.
Back up for Football Focus and On the ball / Saint & Greavsie, again hoping for any Huddersfield Town features. A quick munchi, a kick around then back in to watch Grandstand and rugby league matches on muddy pitches and exciting commentary by Eddie Waring and the score flash ‘Football Latest’ then the video printer and the Town result !
Today I took some programmes from 1979/80 to the north end of the West Island and my fishing rod. Town blue skies and stunning scenery and the old Kilnave chapel in the background of the silhouette of the sky I fondly remembered those lovely memories and thought of Saint and Greavsie up there in The Heavenly tv studio.
Both pass away in 2021, but as an earlier letter writer said, a decent innings.
Before my time as a player, he scored a hat-trick in the 9-3 (gulp) ! hammering of Scotland, thankfully it happened before my arrival on the scene in 1970 !
Jimmy - your reunited up there tonight with your tv buddy and former opponent on the field of play The Saint, also reunited with your wee lad James jnr. that you lost in infancy, I’m too young to remember your playing career, but clearly it was first class, however I’m not to young to remember your tv career with The Saint and as you bid farewell to this world - Thanks for these tv memories Greavsie !

I remember him interviewing Harold Wilson on TV am one morning. He said to Harold " don't you always carry a photograph of the famous Huddersfield Town team of the 1920s". Pleased as punch Harold got the photo out of his wallet and passed it to Greaves. He perused it and with a twinkle in his eye said " stone me, half of them are still in the first team". 😃😃
Nice one Jim.

What makes you think she’s a man?? Or that there's anyone up there at all ? Well it’s my lazy assumption it is a man. But in all honesty, I don’t believe it any of it. It’s all knackers to me. And therefore I will come back as Townrwe’s scratty stained underwear. Shiiiiiit.
