Brilliant for young girls to see women celebrated for their skill and performance rather than their looks. But also that it's possible to look feminine and play sport to the elite level as well, that it's not a choice between 'being butch' to play sport or leaving sport to 'look normal'. My wife was quite surprised in the way the players looked. My niece (10 years old) started playing last year and was wavering a bit after the first couple of sessions. The first time she was the only girl there and had to get changed by herself alone, it made her feel out of place and she didn't want to go back. She stuck with it and then they got enough girls together for a team, although it covers a few age group so she plays against 12 year old girls that are bigger than her. Contrast this to my 8 year old nephew that's in a team at the same club, they play against lots of other teams and have an established setup. In the summer five a side tournaments, they have lots of teams to play against whilst his sister's team is scratching around for games. Hopefully yesterday will mean lots more girls take it up and my niece will be able to have closer to the same opportunities that her younger brother will have to be in leagues, tournaments and the rest. Playing team sports is so rewarding as you go through adolescence - most of my best childhood memories are of playing football in the old Gelpack league and for school. It would be great if young girls get to experience that more often, for longer. Surprised to hear that. Maybe its dependant on where you live because the pitches in Mirfield next to John Cottons have been full of girls matches on a Saturday morning for a good few years now. Lots of different age groups so I presumed there was already a thriving girls league in the area. It is thriving pal. Battyeford Belles have a great set up. There’s some travel involved (Sheffield, Donny, Leeds etc) but there’s loads of teams at all ages. Saturday mornings down at Battyeford are brilliant. And…..the quality is fantastic!

Off the top of my head around here, we have Battyeford, Brighouse, Brighouse Town, Norristhorpe (playing down at Warrenside), Westend.

With a team sport, you'd need the lasses to be on top form and the lads (and they were just lads) to have a bit of an off-day. But it won't happen; except perhaps in a cheap publicity stunt of an exhibition match. Same way as we'll never get to see Serena Williams against Rafal Nadal. Or the World champion heavyweight boxer would never be put in the ring with the equivalent light welterweight. I'm not questioning why you're posing the suggestion/argument 'Coma (PS, love the Tricky reference) - but more often than not, these hypothetical scenarios are served up to do nothing but denigrate the womens' game. That was sort of my point- that men and women are built differently (sorry, please don't cancel me ) so it's silly to compare the way they play the game. Though I have heard some people use that US exhibition match as a stick to beat the women's game with, when really it was just one or two of the women in the squad trying to boost their own profile- which predictably backfired. As for the username, I was getting a bit bored of it and thought about changing it to "Collin Occupants (of Interquanertary Craft)" because I love a forced pun... but unfortunately that one was too long!

Ellen White has been a fantastic striker.
Of all the women, I think she has suffered unnecessarily with comparison to the Men's game and in particularly Wayne Rooney's record.
Her achievements don't come close to matching Rooney and the comparison simply shouldn't be made.
However, whilst she clearly isn't as quick or strong as the men I would suggest over my period of support Town have all to often not had strikers whose movement and finishing were close to matching Ellen White's.

Quality bugliner in the past, improved her all-round game as she got older (as many players do obviously). Only blot on her career is the L***s bit. As andyeastleake says, comparisons to the male record holders are just stupid, but then the ladies DO compare themselves to the men's game when they outshine the blokes. Which is more often than not

Sky sports news just couldn't help themselves yesterday. "she goes out on 52 England goals, just short of becoming Englands all time record goalscorer with Wayne Rooney on 53."
What a load of shit. Everyone knows England record goalscorer is David Clarke, who scored 128 goals for Englands blind team. Thats football too so clearly exactly the same thing.

Exactly Slapps Shouldn't compare each different type of competitor's competitions. Wasn't there a homeless England team that won shitloads of tournaments sometime in the 90s or 00s? Love watching women's football but to continually compare it to the men's game is ridiculous, although to be fair it's usually the detractors (hello morley) who compare the two. Maybe if the FA in the 1920s hadn't been such misogynist twats it wouldn't be the case and the skill levels would be comparable to each other, despite the (usual, not always) biological differences in strength! Apart from Town I prefer watching the women's game. Less cheating (although still exists), less diving and feigning injury (although I saw it creeping in during the Euros), no surrounding the ref at decisions they don't like, no bitching and moaning when they get tackled hard but fair (hello Wilfred and Cristiano) and the atmosphere at games is so much less hostile. Although against L***s and Shitty, et al I DO like the hostility in the stands, sometimes it gets too out of hand. And that's coming from someone who hung around with the Hecky New Inn HYC boys in the 90s

Big Jill departs too 👏👏👏👏👏 I thought she might be retiring from internationals soon, she looked as though she lost some sharpness recently, but didn't think she'd retire altogether just yet. She's never been the quickest, but was always quick-thinking from the times I watched her. But last season in the WSL she didn't seem to be as "on it" in that central midfield as she used to be. Brilliant career though Jill Scott and whenever I saw her interviewed she seemed to know what she was on about. Punditry or coaching beckons for her I should imagine.

Everyone knows England record goalscorer is David Clarke, who scored 128 goals for Englands blind team. Thats football too so clearly exactly the same thing. I thought it was just the BBC who were PC Slapps. 😉 All they needed to do was actually report that she’s England’s highest scorer in the Women’s game. It would actually have been a far bigger complement to her. Instead they’ve just triggered discussions like this one, which probably frustrates the women anyway. The women’s game will not be on a par with men’s football in my lifetime, but that’s not really a problem to most people. I believe the only country it does come close is in the US. I can’t imagine the 2035 version of Lucy Bronze being paid £200k per week. However, if the game gets viewing traction and starts to get similar TV viewing figures as the men’s game, that’s when those sort of things will become uncomfortable for the bastards who control our football.

Sky Sports News seem more focussed on constant virtue signalling than they are on actually reporting sports news! they make the BBC look like the daily mail!

If the world record fee for Women footballer’s is only £350k, we could have afforded that. Haha. Some better than what we have.
