Russell and Hogg could play together last season because we played with a 3 and they had O’Brien who was capable of driving forward. They simply cannot play in a 2 together in the championship which was clear after about 10 minutes. You have to have a runner in there. Hoggs pace has gone and Russell never had any. Holmes should have dropped in to help them but he just stood 39 yards away with ward. If we’re pressed in midfield then Holmes is never the right choice. If we’re allowed the ball in the middle and are on the front foot he is a major threat. We got it wrong tonight, don’t think we were expecting such an aggressive press and we didn’t cope well with it.

As he was when he turned down 4 penalties v Sheffield United last season Linington has been wank for us over the years but tonight, I dont see what he did wrong, apart from not give Burnley a stonewall pen Or giving them a free kick for offside 15 yards into our half 🤔

Let's face it, we're miles away from looking like a competitive championship team going off tonight's performance, It was scarily bad.
To go from a team finishing 3rd to that in the space of a couple of months is very worrying.
It was a risky decision to appoint DS & the experiment may blow up in Hoyles face without a massive upturn in performance, that was nowhere near what's required at this level.

Well done to Burnley. They looked well coached, hungry & played an attractive brand of football, the complete opposite to us, unfortunately..

I'm baffled that people believe they only looked good because we were so dire. I thought they looked very good but maybe lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. Thankfully, otherwise it could have been 4 or 5 nil.

so you can be offside in your own half ? If the player controls the ball in their own half, coming from offside position.. the opposition can take it in that half. Just a rule I’m afraid One I've never heard of or ever seen implemented

Just some observations.. Sorba is a luxury, was last season, will be again. He points at his man for somebody else to pick up, he never wins a 50/50 or a header and he switches off more than any player I have ever seen at Town. Ffs leave him up the pitch. Russell was blowing hard at 40 minutes, thats the same issue he had last season. Its no good saying he had o Brien running for him, a lad that age has to be able to at least run hard for 90. Holmes and Koroma are so lightweight they lost out tonight to two lads smaller than them. The ball does not stick with them and they do not win enough challenges, if they are ever close enough to where the ball is in the first place. We failed to have any threat at all for 60 minutes thereby allowing Burnley to push their full backs on, their holding midfielder and consequently always having at least one forward pass on, often 2. Tino comes on and changes that? We have to be more proactive and forward thinking and playing, often Burnleys best moves were simply down to numbers around the ball to win it and nunbers moving forward near the bloke with the ball. All too often our man on the ball was very much on his own and those closing down were easily bypassed due to one simple forward ball to an unmarked burnley player dropping in. Overall, no threat for too long allowing Burnley to push on and a lack of simple graft to support each other. We only lost by a goal, probably down to Lees covering and the subbing of holmes and koroma, damage limitation at home.

I'm not too sure what formation we were supposed to be playing. It looked like 442 but whatever it was, tonight clearly showed that it ain't going to work with this group of players.
Hogg and Russell completely overrun.
Turton and Ruffels unsure whether to stick or twist. I think tonight showed why CC had success playing 5 at the back last season
Ward and Holmes both looked lost and when it did arrive up top, Holmes immediately gave it back.
Sorba looked way off the pace and seemed like he was blowing out of his arse.
Koroma is just League 1 at best.....Fact
Tino looked good and Rudoni did ok but is not a winger. It looked like Schofield realised this and swapped him and Tino around late on.
Only one game but I don't want to see that system played again this season.

Tonight was best summed up for me in the 23rd or so minute
Burnley had a corner which was cleared. Sorba chased the ball down the pitch and there were FIVE Burnley players who had bust a gut to sprint back from our box to defend their box
Behind that the town players were ambling forward. This was barely 20 mins in so I’m not having they were tired
It will all be there in the replay for them to watch. If I as schofield I would show that to the players and ask them why they lacked the same basic “desire” as the Burnley players. They can’t answer that because they didn’t show the desire on the night. Specific reference to our “attackers”

We got it wrong tonight, don’t think we were expecting such an aggressive press and we didn’t cope well with it. Holmes will never be a major threat period. Holmes, Koroma and Russell play as if the game owes them a living - not one of them will ever earn the right to compete in a game and just let games pass them by. Wards not far off that level too. The major issue with that starting line up bar Hogg (who is passed it playing in a 2) and partially Sorba is the front six will never dominate a game. The difference with Tino and Rudoni was stark and that was just because both tried to commit players, neither particularly created anything but tried to make an impact. I'd have Rhodes in too as he'll at least gain ground through fouls and giving him two minutes based on that performance was a disgrace. The next games starting line up will certainly be interesting. Holmes and Koroma shouldn't make the squad.

Just got back. After Burnley settled, about 10 minutes in, we were just lost. Hogg, Russell & Holmes were just passed around like they weren't there. Burnley's high press was effective and aggressive. Our back line had no time on the ball whereas we just stood off theirs and let them build. Koroma and Thomas, in the first half, were hardly in it but that was partly because Burnley had 75% possession or more, so they hardly saw the ball. Second half subs changed things. Closed down and ran at the Burnley defence. Burnley started to look nervous just for a while, stray passes and losing possession but they regained their composure in the last 10-15 minutes or so. Maybe the injury to Kasumu showed why the new players didn't start, maybe just need easing in a bit more. I was worried about REG but I thought he did OK given the lack of support in front of him for most of the game. So, in a nutshell, we were really poor. The flip side of that coin is I don't think we will see many better teams than Burnley this season. They still look like a Premier League outfit. I think we need to see how we do against other sides to really judge. Also Danny needs time. Last thing, Tino looks very good. Looks like he could run through brick walls. Completely changed the feel of the game when he came on. Agree with this. We were very good last season at countering the other teams play. We studied the opposition hard and had a plan for each game. We couldn’t do that against Burnley and at least we were better for the first 20 mins after the break. If we played them next week I’m sure we would set up very different. The ball was probably in play for a quarter of the last 20 mins due to their time wasting and all the dodgy free kicks the ref gave. It wasn’t too different from last season and had our set pieces been at a standard they were last season then we could have drawn the game. At least Schofield knows to play Tino and Rudoni from the start now.

Schofields comments- The new lads did well but it always takes a bit of time to get to understand the way we want to play football.
For the love of God please do not try to coach that dogshit football we witnessed in the first half into them. I can see any ability in those new lads being coached straight out of them due to some arrogant belief in the football we try to play.

Burnley looked decent and organised but we really didn’t help ourselves. Too many bad performances all over the pitch. Russell seems to be sneaking under the radar but that was a real shocker from him - absolutely miles off it all night. Russell and Hogg could play together last season because we played with a 3 and they had O’Brien who was capable of driving forward. They simply cannot play in a 2 together in the championship which was clear after about 10 minutes. Not enough mobility between the two of them to be in a midfield 2. Would go back three with hogg in between lees and Yuka personally but kasumu injury probs means we will be stuck with them as a two

An example would be Bruce's team in 99 against QPR then a couple of weeks later against Palace.
