The reactions after game 1 of the season against what looked a very good team are a joke, is it Posisble we could give it at least a few weeks before booing and complaining about everything. Last night I agree we were poor with what looked like weak links in the team REG - I just don’t believe he is good enough no confidence with him in the team, pretty sure Tom Lees would not be too happy playing because to him. Ruffles - again doesn’t look good enough to start every week in the championship. Koroma - I think we should get rid if at all possible he can’t do it any longer injuries have set him back too much. Holmes - first touch was awful last night, good squad player but not to start. Russell - he has the ability but he is too slow to react and wants too much time against a good side, against other teams he may look a world beater but last night Hogg was alone. However as a positive from the above I think if everyone if fully fit and available then maybe only Russell starts, LB will be Juta, CB would have been Pearson (I think we will sign someone in next week or two now on loan), RW will be Rodoni or Mahoney, CAM will be Tino who last night was our best player when he came on. We have to be careful with the new players as they are not fully upto speed and we didn’t want to use any of them for long, Kasumus injured is down to not being fully match fit and prepared for the season. I for one am still positive that we will win more games than we lose this season, that might change by the end of August but let’s hope not. The new players aren't up to speed, as apposed to what? the rest of the squad look like they've been asleep for a year, absolute shite pre season

What do you expect we are 3 weeks behind every other team due to the playoffs. With such a short summer break this years it’s even worse, we could not come in earlier than we did as all players needed a break / holiday after last season.
Our new lads have not been involved in a friendly game you can’t expect them to just rock up and play.

I didn't attend last night due to being away but was it really that bad and is anyone really that surprised it was so bad? The limitations of the squad have been there for a while, last season papered over the cracks, CC managed to find a way to get the results but it came at the expense of entertainment. When I saw the starting line up I was a bit mystified to see no new signings starting, why so? If they aren't good enough yo start why the hell are they here? The Thomas and Koroma performances do not surprised me one bit, one is over rated and the other has totally gone to pieces. The Holmes one does as he usually gets stuck in and works hard as a minimum. Clearly work to be done on the training ground. Sorry CiS how on earth you can say that Holmes "usually gets stuck in" is absolutely beyond me. It really is. What ever else you say about him "getting stuck in" is surely never one of his attributes.

The two that did “rock up” are positives and imagine how good they will be when they are fully ready and against a team not of the standard of Burnley who is expect will be top 2 this season.

Burnley played us off the pitch. Cullen was immense. Maatsen and Bastien too. Parachute payments combined with good recruitment. Not losing the head though. They’ll be top 6 this season.

One team came out prepared, with purpose and direction, relishing a season in the championship in which they wont get battered every week
The other came out ill prepared, with a mentality that seemed to say 'we'll never repeat last season after whats happened this summer´
The message has filtered down to the players and thats worrying
Needs to change quick. No ambition could land us in big trouble

Yeah but can he play centre mid? Don’t get me wrong if high wasn’t at Rotherham he’d be in front of Holmes. We need someone in midfield that can at least run. He's a similar player but he's far more creative, looks bloody good and has a good touch and shot on him tbh. We would need at least one forward thinking player in midfield alongside Hogg and Russell, otherwise its stagnant and creativity would be absolutely nil 😅 I don't understand how Russel is seen to be a holding midfielder when he refuses to run, track back and tackle. He might be better more advanced where he can be more creative. High should never have been loaned out.

As usual, some people not prepared to give any credit to the opposition as being a contributing factor to our performance.
Burnley are just down from the PL, have a new coach and were “at it” from minute one. You could see the hunger when they were warming up.
In my opinion, we were not prepared to face a team playing with that much energy and ability to play a one touch passing game at speed. I don’t lay any blame on DS for this - first game of the season and impossible to assess the opposition beforehand.
I’d prefer to concentrate on the positives. Whilst we completely failed to compete in the 1st half, it didn’t take DS long to change it in the 2nd. For a spell, we really lifted our game and this was our opportunity to equalise - which obviously didn’t happen.
The highlight was surely the introduction of Tino. Wow! what an impact he made - first Town player to get me out of my seat in a long time.
So, I’m not downhearted about last night - I saw enough to suggest that once we are able to set up properly we will compete at the top end . 0 - 1 was not an embarrassment and hopefully things will get better next Friday.

The one thing he can do is pass but only if opponents give him loads of time to do so.

His vision for a final pass at times is quality, what goods that in a 6 role? He needs to be more advanced. I'd like Rudoni off Ward or Rhodes at some stage and Russell in the middle as a CM.

We can't judge the manager or players after one game, but that was very, very poor. Credit to Burnley, who outplayed us in every department, but we have to be more competitive than that.
We looked unfit, lacked desire all over the pitch and were directionless. I couldn't work out what our plan was at all.
One thing's for sure, if we repeat last night's stats, even against weaker teams, we will struggle. 30% possession with a pass accuracy of 67% is not sustainable. And two shots off target (I can only recall one!) is simply appalling.
Now is not time to panic, but it's not the loss that's concerning, it's the manner of the loss. We were lucky to get nil and Burnley should have won more comfortably.
I just hope Danny S has learned some hard lessons from that. Major improvements are needed just to compete, never mind win, at this level.
Anjorin's performance was the highlight of the evening, and I hope to see him starting the next game. Beyond that, I'm struggling to find positives. It's a while since I saw such a poor performance from Town.

I’ll read back over this thread with a bit more time, to see what will probably be overreactions from some. First game of a long season, first half was rubbish, second half a little better, but we didn’t get the drop of the balls after many challenges and didn’t get any sort of momentum. Can’t grumble about the result, but will still wait until we’re a few games in before passing judgment on these players. We were a bit out of shape tonight, hopefully they’ve plenty to work on in training now… Burnley did get the run of the ball, but they also had a much better shape than us, which seemed to give them that extra few yards of space. UTT!!! They played forward at every opportunity, they move onto the ball, they move towards where the ball is and do not run away if its lost. They close down quickly, in numbers and they support with numbers the ball moving forward. Even their little fellas chase, harry and challenge. Other than those minor defeciencies we were well up with them. We carried 3 players last night and only lost by one goal, there is the positive.

If he does not get fitter there isnt a future here or anywhere in professional football for him. You cannot be blowing hard and be unable to at least track back at 40 minutes. We know he can play but its of little use if we carry another player just in case he 'does something good' at some point?

We didn't register a chance. If you end up being right then hats off - that kind of footballing vision could see you become our next DoF.

I mean this with respect but that is probably one of the strangest opinions I have ever read on this forum. We had 30% possession, 65% pass accuracy, 0 shots on target and should have lost about 4 or 5 nil but for poor finishing by our opponent. We put in one of the worst performances we've seen at the ground in a long time. How could you possibly have seen anything to suggest we will compete at the TOP end of the table? Absolutely baffling how you can come to that conclusion.

I’d be more worried about finding three teams worse than us rather than expecting to compete at the top!
Awful last night.
Out fitness/shape/attitude/team selection all wrong.
A terrible pre season which has (unsurprisingly) manifested itself into that non performance last night.
Work to do…

Burnley’s last game was 22nd May - 8 days before the play off final They suffered last day relegation as they lost and Leeds won - so their players had huge personal disappointment and the club had to quickly pivot its finances due to relegation They then spent the summer changing manager and overhauling the squad - ingoings and outgoings The shortened summer argument is pretty mute in regards to yesterdays opponents imo

They’ve had to completely overhaul their squad yet played like a team who were well drilled, fit, knew their patterns of play. Compare that to our shambolic team selection and performance. I’d hazard a guess Burnley didn’t play two friendlies in the same day with their team split as part of their preparation. I guess that’s what you get appointing a serial winner as a manager compared to a youth team coach.

It was a poor performance but the way everyone has shit the bed, Jesus.
Booing at half time.
Booing Koroma off the pitch.
Utter meltdown.
Schofield is going to need some time and he’s got to have the team far better set up. But he’s had one game and about a month in the job.
The middle of the park is a big concern though. Hogg and Russell were all at sea, they were passing it round us for fun. Kasumu looked good but seems like he’s got breadsticks for hamstrings. Desperately need another player to give us the energy O’Brien gave us.

Good luck to Danny S but he’s just another in a long line of young coaches that Hoyle has chucked in at the deep end in the hope they’ll work a miracle. Clark, Robins, Powell, Siewart… The men he’s recruited without a ‘football man’ telling him what to do have all been a disaster. I see little to suggest any difference this time around.

Yes, I was very impressed with them. Miles better than most teams we saw last season. Bit like Boro at home last season how we were closed down and couldn't cope but Burnley's movement was excellent. As for us, not a huge surprise but disappointing none the less. Clearly Danny is up against it. I hope he gets some more people into his support team soon and pushes on with the tough calls required.

It was the manner of the defeat. We were not prepared and unfit, we could not pass the ball and did not know how to press as a team. Booing players does not help but we were pathetic. Burnley were a new team with a new coach and they looked to have sorted themselves out why couldn't we. It is too late to start worrying after 8 games, we have to look at the setup now because we were worse last night than we were against Fulham. Forest did ok after a shit first 8 games last season…. We could copy them. 1) change the Manager head coach 2) Spend some money and bring players in 3) Get some very good loan players in What are the chances that we will do any of the above?

Last season we got well beaten by two of the teams that had come down the season before and we’re played off the park in them games too. Fulham and Bournemouth hammered us at home last year and played us off the park. We have to wait and see how we perform up against the teams that are in similar positions to ourselves as it is obvious the parachute payment teams will nearly always have better quality players than those without and this clearly shows. Judging after one game against a team with one player worth more than our squad is madness and counter productive. Have we learned nothing after last year? Next week should give an indication of where we really are. Is that basically saying we now have to accept being also rans?! Thats not a dig.....but burnley had 6 debutants last night! They looked sharper, quicker, technically better, had a clear identity and pattern - with a new mgr. We simply didnt. Yes its only 1 game but lets not window dress it - we were dreadful. We go again next week...... All I am attempting to say is we should wait to see how we are set after four or five weeks as we would hope we have a very good idea on where we are likely to be this season. No team will be a good every game and hopefully we will see our true colours over the next few weeks.
