Looked absolutely shattered after 30 minutes.
Goodness me he is slow enough to begin with but in both halves all the Burnley players were soon going past him as though he wasn't there.
Looks very classy when he does that trademark turn, otherwise a total luxury. Add Holmes and Hoggy in midfield and we saw what happened tonight.

His biggest issue is his 1st touch. If he gets that right he will be a player. Agree with some of the other comments about him and Hogg together. Perhaps away from home it works, but it isn't dynamic enough and the lack of pace between them is highlighted more when you have a good passing team like Burnley. He struggled to press high enough (probably about fitness). I thought his first touch was his biggest asset lol. Just goes to show football is a game of opinions 100%. I generally rate him, but thought a few times his touch took him in to trouble. When receiving the ball he is great on the turn and picking a pass though. I was personally happy when Kasumu was given a run out and that Schofield generally got his subs right.

Definitely not his best night.
I like him but he was way too slow and cumbersome.
A second too slow in every movement in my opinion.

I was surprised by this, but like you say a real game of opinions. He definately has something about him and given the step up last year he's doing well. I personally think a bit early to see him as the next 'sale' etc.

I didn't see the game tonight, but I read that Russel was even slower than he was against Burnley. he wasn't exactly rapid against Brum either. Think he needs benching to let him think again about competing for places.

Towards the climax of last season the Cowshed Loyal displayed a banner stating that it was... "time for new heroes". The class of '22 did not quite deliver on this mandate and write their name into Huddersfield Town folklore. But on the eve of the 22/23 season I'm confident that we still have heroes waiting in the wings. And I'm even more certain that one of those is Jon Russell. As a club we are required to look away from the norm to gain an edge off the field, but this also equally applies on the grass too. Big Jon is unique and I firmly believe this season will be his coming of age as a footballer. In the 20 or so appearances he made last season he showed a maturity and composure way above his pay grade. The embryonic signs of a vision and awareness not seen since Mooy graced the Huddersfield Town turf. The creation of time and space from a different continuum. Positivity exemplified, always forward, a risk taker but only when the rewards exceed the peril. Now is the time to build a team around him. You'll probably hear the name of Chelsea's hottest young prospect ring out around the John Smiths Stadium before Jon gets a tune and whilst I'm pleased we have Tino back this term I'll take a man who has arguably been wronged, and with a point to prove, over one who seemingly has the world at his feet. Being released from Chobham will give Jon an unrelenting inner drive - that cannot be coached or taught - to prove his doubters wrong. This will only be to our benefit. His exclusion from the Wembley starting eleven was perplexing and will only add fuel to his already burning desire to succeed this coming term. As many will know from his Mormon background Jon has faith. And now is the time we put our faith in him. Jon, show 'em what you got. In future times, the Wikipedia entry for' kiss of death' will direct to this post.

Something clearly not right with this lad, yet again absolutely blowing out of his arse after being on the pitch for 10 mins.

Someone in the match thread nailed it - 'boots of cement' - and that was after 5/10 minutes.

Not 9 months after his great debut and then many fine performances, he now looks miles off it. To such a degree he’s shouldn’t even be on the bench at the moment. Not the only one like.

There's definitely some 'headspace' problems to sort out with a couple of these players.

Talented feet and football brain combined with zero acceleration and very little agility.
Also feel the hype has got to his head a little, like Thomas.

I don't know, I'm not so convinced it's a mental thing so much as it is a physical thing with Russell. At one point tonight about 15 min after he came on he was literally doubled over and blowing out like he'd just run a marathon, even I would last longer than that charging about the pitch, and he wasn't exactly charging.
Fuck knows what they are doing with him in training.

There's definitely some 'headspace' problems to sort out with a couple of these players. following up on a breakout season with a worse squad taking up the slack is a tough task. It must be difficult reconciling that with trying to go again, while probably knowing deep down we won't be up there this season. In Russell's case various rugs have been pulled from under him too, the midfield partner who mitigated his weak points, the system that basically ran through him in possession, and the manager that put him in the position to be able fill that role

Turns out Carel Eiting was a better option after all.

Turns out Carel Eiting was a better option after all. Yes and no. Personally I felt even at the time that CE was unfortunate not to be picked more than he was. However JRs height was deemed more useful to us than CE's better mobility and footballing brain. And TBF last season it probably was the right call much of the time. With the ridiculously mobile O'Brien alongside him, Russell had the luxury of space in which to operate. Eiting's ability to create his own with a bit of clever movement wasn't as necessary. In the absence of a Lewis O'Brien, if we had the option to swap JR for CE now, I would take it.

Why do so many footballers dye their hair? They look like twats. Is it god's way of showing that players have too much money and too much time on their hands? See also, multiple tattoos, knob rings etc...

Time best spent on the training ground at the moment, seems to be doing a 'Gazza' & mars bars are far too expensive to throw on pitch these days.......get your fitness back JR, quickly..

Still believe John has a medical issue that isnt sorting itself quickly. I know he isnt quick and that he is a big lad carrying some weight but his actual stamina seems to have gone downhill, a lot. Lets see if the club and him can sort it, there is an important player for us there.

Fuck knows what they are doing with him in training. He's been worked out by analysts. Bournemouth worked him out by using Billing to drift behind him and then to stand on his toes when we were in possession. Luton also worked out that the best way to nullify Russell is to stand on him and he can't get away, they did this in both playoff games where JR was pretty poor. Throw in that Lewis O'Brien did the majority of the legwork in midfield and JR has had a tough run. I wouldn't write the guy off though, he's a nice, humble lad who'll work his backside off to improve. He's young and he just needs to work out how to adapt to what's happening. Having someone like Kasumu alongside him would help but Russell in an ideal world really needs sending for high altitude marathon training for a few months . He'll come again.

To me, his immobility looks more of a mechanical issue than aerobic fitness or conditioning. I think he could benefit from some coaching sessions with a specialist from the world of track and field. He'll never be quick, but if he could find just an extra yard of pace it would have a significant bearing on the sort of career he goes on to enjoy. Even just a chat with Lampard Snr could set him off on the right path!
