On the plus side, it's one hammering that we have avoided - until the rescheduling, anyway...

Are you a member of any GAA club, pipes? No Epsom, but I do enjoy GAA, especially hurling. I've been to a few games but not for quite a while now. Incredibly fast game as a spectator sport. Skilful and violent. Not for the faint hearted. My son used to play Gaelic football but nowadays a gust of wind would blow him over. I weigh exactly two of him. I've seen some great hurling matches over the years, many going down to the last puck of the sliotar. I don’t want to derail this thread but I know about how ingrained and important the GAA is to life in Ireland, and I agree with you about hurling and Gaelic football.

This is disgraceful, another knee jerk massive over reaction. We will now be subjected to mass hysteria for the next 10 days of people crying crocodile tears to show how virtuous they are. I get it that the queen has died, butwhy cant respect be shown by having 2 minutes silence at matches? Why does the match have to be called off. As usual it is the ordinary people who have been shown no respect, why should i have to lose money for my train ticket to show respect? What this shows yet again is more evidence that the football authorities and the EFL in particular are not fit for purpose and hold ordinary match going fans in contempt. Roll on the republic. Good post. Echoes my thoughts on the matter. But I reckon you could do with a profile pic.

Apparently individual sporting bodies can make their own decision. Personally I couldn't give a shit that she's died (doesn't mean I'm happy, just that I don't really care, it's not going to affect me emotionally/mentally, etc), I'm more bothered about the impact on the amount of football I get to watch this weekend (which clearly now is none)

In context of what the media will be all about, the voices of a couple of hundred of thousand football supporters won't even register.
This isn't even something you can blame the Royals or the Govt for, this looks to have been a decision driven by the FA.
You know, those football authorities that fuck up the arrangements of their punters on a regular basis...
Hopefully common sense will prevail for the midweek games.
I can guarantee they won't be shutting down the stock market, as they haven't today. Got to keep the money moving...

Leadmill tonight for me, thankfully not all common sense has deserted this country, then it’ll be a weekend of foreign sport. Anything other than the 24/7 somber fest we are supposed to endure.

I can imagine that had the games proceeded, there would have been a minutes silence, applause or some kind of recognition. I could see that not being honoured by some fans which the EFL and PL would see as a reflection on them. Wouldn't surprise me if they have done it just to avoid the risk of losing face. The football authorities did not make this decision, you and I should know that by now. We are being told how to react and what we can and cant do. I think the vast, vast majority of the population would easily accept sport etc being cancelled yesterday and the day of the funeral but thats not enough misery and control. Reality is she was 96 had a very full life and its not a shock or a tragedy. We are not celebrating these facts we are mourning a death, its the wrong way round because our lives are to be made more miserable by those it suits for us to be fearful and miserable.

What a fucking joke. No idea what the justification is. Why can’t we just get on with our lives? Imagine the train and hotel costs up and down the country that will be wasted as a result. Grand Central have refunded my train tickets. No problem at all. Split tickets allowed me to defer. It’ll work ok as I’ll be booking the next London away game. But it’s a farce. Play the game. Minutes applause. Get on with it Just another example of the state telling us how we should go about our lives. Fuck right off

You can't play football but you can go shopping or to the pub..... ridiculous.
I'm fond of the monarchy... but I played cricket the day after my own father died, I can choose how I mourn someone's death, don't need to be told.

Maybe the tone of the message, "no obligation for sport to cancel things" etc. might have been delivered with a footnoote? I definitely think was the wrong call though, driven by the men in suits who rarely have a scoobies about what the game means to folk...

She’s just an old lady I didn’t know who died. Sad for the family but not for me. Todays decision (and likely postponement of other games) will have a negative impact on thousands of peoples finances at a time of a national economic crisis. Again it’s the working class who suffer! Anyone who can’t get a refund on costs incurred for any games could ask the Windsors for recompense out of a sense of fairness but don’t hold your breath! Disgraceful situation! Viva la Republique!!

The people making these decisions don't really have a clue as to how people lead their lives. Some folk will be sad, but it won't or possibly even can't stop them from getting on with their day jobs...
It's selective respect.

Can also see the midweek game and next Saturday's being called off also. Given they've left it open with regard to future games I can only presume they are awaiting confirmation of funeral details before makng a decision. IMHO this seems excessive and unnecessary but I'm sure others disagree.

What are we supposed to do, seriously? Is going shopping wrong? Socialising over a coffee? Where do you draw the line of not showing respect? My kids will want to go and kick a ball about in the park, is that allowed or will I be seen as disrespectful if I do? And for how long do I need to do this for? I would have shown far more respect at the match, had a minutes silence and football would have come together, it would have been very respectful up and down the country. Now what do we do? Just sit at home and watch telly I guess.

I don't live in Great Britain but I would have the same thoughts and reactions if I still did.
A wonderful old lady, who has led a full life and has served her country pretty much immaculately for a lot longer than I've been alive, has very sadly passed.
Me thinking it is wrong to cancel future sporting events that have been planned for and paid for often well in advance and at considerable expense doesn't change what a fantastic queen she was.
I think both sides of the argument have been expressed fairly well in this thread, which is a credit to DATM.

Well I'm glad it's off because I thought we'd lose.
Onto Tuesday night. Minutes silence, black armbands and a certain James McClean 'hates the Queen' playing for Wigan....Please nobody shout anything daft at him.

I find it all laughably old-fashioned and a throwback to the Middle Ages. Each to their own I suppose but I have no more respect for Elizabeth Windsor than the woman next door. Less in fact as the latter is a nice lady.

I doubt that there will never be another monarch that showed her dignity and honour. However 2 minutes silence before all games would have served as a very moving moment of respect. The government called it right for once. The dinosaurs at the FA have made a dreadful decision. Thousands of fans will have wasted money at a time when people are worrying about how they will afford to live. Your post is up there with some of the ridiculous ones that I myself post sometimes.
