You may or may not be aware that we are approaching the 50th anniversary of when Town's youth team became not only the very first Town team to reach the F.A. Youth Cup final but also the first Yorkshire team to do so.
Famously, the 2nd leg of the final was played at Leeds Road in front of over 15,000. They lost 1-0 in extra time but that feat has never been bettered.
Did anyone go? Or have any memories of the game?

Yes, I went to a few youth team games that season, including the Spurs final. I was only 10 but I loved watching Lloyd Maitland, I thought he was going to be a star. And Peter Hart of course. Not many made a top professional career though.

I was there, surprising how few of the lads on either side went on to be top players, Neil McNab for Spurs was about as good as it got.

I went, was 19 and on an accountancy course at the then Poly, took a couple of fellow students , one a Palace supporter from South London and a lad from Malaysia , both of whom lived in rather poor student accom, and were more than happy to go to the match. Watched from the Cowshed, absolutely fantastic atmosphere, if I remember Steve Spriggs was playing . Sure I must have a program stored away in about 20 boxes awaiting sorting, over 50 years worth.

Did a lot of Town games home and away in them days, also did a lot of clubbing and drinking, only thing I remember in 72 to 74 is getting arrested and banged up in Blackpool after the match.

I had both of the programmes - that's as good as it got, I'm afraid.

Played West Brom in semi. Brian Robson was playing. Bryan Robson sat behind my wife in geography classes at Lord Lawson secondary school, Birtley. Used to kick her chair - obviously couldn't keep his feet still.

We were in the doldrums then and he had a long and successful time at Cambridge United.

I know he played in the other rounds, I’ll have to dig out the programme , Spriggs was a very tidy midfield player , had a long stay at Cambridge if I can remember that correctly . I can remember being at the game as though it was yesterday.

I remember the game. Attended with some school friends and recall that the game attracted that great crowd. Without referencing google I recall: Dick Taylor, Spriggs, Newton, Franny Firth, Fowler , Maitland, Paul Garner. Playing for Yown.
Wayne Cegelski captained Spurs I think.

Steve missed the final, he says his two biggest regrets in life are leaving Town and missing that final. Why did SS regret leaving Town? We were in the doldrums then and he had a long and successful time at Cambridge United. Steve's interview will be in the Ipswich Town programme and I'll post it on here, but basically, he loved it at Town and said after the first day he walked into Leeds Road as a kid, all he ever wanted to do was play for Town. He was banging Tom Johnston's door down in the 1974-75 season asking why he couldn't get in the team and Johnston kept fobbing him off saying that he was playing players that the club were trying to get rid of and that he'd be in the team for the following season. However, the last time he went in the office, Johnston told him he was being released. I couldn't put it in the interview, but he didn't have kind words for Johnston. Steve says he had a good career at Cambridge, but would have swapped a lot of that to have had more of a career at Town.

Remember Jones playing for Spurs from Big Match Revisited. And Art bloody Garfunkel playing for them, did he ever have a bad game for Blackburn against us

Just shy of 16000 I think ! The highest attendance since 1972. A difficult period being a Town supporter, 3 relegations in 4 seasons ( without checking ) , but didn’t stop me travelling all over , Aldershot, Torquay, Southport, Workington (cup) , happy days never less , I bought programs wherever I went, so some memories in them there boxes. One of the games I particularly remember was Fulham away in the FA Cup, won 3-2 against a team containing Bobby Moore and Alan Mullery who if my memory is correct got kicked all over the park by Brian O’Neil.

He must have been crap against everyone else because he was always outstanding when I saw him.

Interesting read and comments - I think I read it in one of my many Town books but it’s a while ago and that was six years before I fell for HTAFC...
As some have aligned to, probably a rare shining light on a terrible period for HTAFC... ☹️
I’ve very vague memories of 1974 (was four in the summer) but I think my first memories are from 1973 when we moved to our new council house...
Great era for music if not for Town - That youth team apart !

Lloyd Maitland thats all I remember First game I played in the open age Sunday League, after finishing with the U16's, I had this little black bloke trying to cripple me without actually managing to connect. He ended up walking off with about 10 minutes to go. Didn't know at the time it was Maitland, he got sine die not long after.

Really nice bloke once you get to know him, has gone through a lot of shit in his life. Received terrible racist abuse when he played for Town in the mid-1970s.
