When you say “weight of the Examiner behind them”, what do you actually mean? Steven Chicken was single-handedly propping up examiner football coverage. The content they have now is behind a paywall, but it’s of the same quality as before… the user experience has been enhanced because the landing pages on SubStack are advert free. I’m happy to vouch for the quality. Arguably it’s a better experience than before, for a more than fair price. Fair enough, I just dont see a position where id be willing to subscribe monthly to an unknown, Pretty much every subscription service has a try before you buy, and I think would probably increase uptake and also identify the likely size of the audience and if its likely to be a sustainable model or if it could even be expanded as an offering. Your loss really, then. Think they're delighted with how many people have subscribed. All the information they provided prior to the move to Substack confirmed what you'd be getting. A podcast every week (with little to no changes from Oooh To Be A) then two advert-free pieces of long form a week, and then the player ratings. It's the same thing as before, with no adverts, and it costs £5 a month. I don't really know if I think a try-before-you-buy option makes any sense. You know what you're getting, who you're getting etc. Fair enough if you don't want to though.

Great post Gledholt. I played for years in the Huddersfield Open snooker league and each Thursday the Examiner used to print all of the results for all matches played the previous week. They used to print the league tables every few months too. Before the Open league set up it's own web site, it was the only way to see how everyone was doing. They used to print photos of the player with the highest break that week and the Examiner photographers used to come round the clubs on match days to take pictures of teams which would be published throughout the season. I've still got a print of my team taken in 2001. Sadly, these days are behind us. The world has moved on. I can accept that the snooker stuff has now moved online to a dedicated Web site, but I can't see the justification of a local newspaper not having dedicated coverage of the local football team. As you say, it's the deathknell of the Examiner. You forgot the Dart, dominoes & all fours league tables as well. It used to be full of useful/useless information that used to be the backbone of our society/culture and now is just a waste of paper. You can't even get your fish and chips in old copies anymore. I played snooker in the Liberal League on Monday too. We played snooker, dominoes and all fours on the same night. Only played for the snooker. Didn't have a clue what I was doing at the other two, which often annoyed the clubs who took these really seriously. They couldn't follow what I was doing - mainly because I didn't have a clue myself! I remember royally pissing off a couple of old fellas who played dominoes for Moldgreen Lib. Happy days!

I subscribed a week ago. Very pleased and it’s good to be able to have a regular source of Town content. I like to read SC’s player ratings ( sometimes it makes me think again about my own opinion ) and look forward to the 5 conclusions for the same reason. Ithey seem happy with the uptake and it’s good to “ shop local”

As I said to the other poster, it’s entirely up to you. Regarding the player ratings, I always find that they challenge my own in a good way. ST and DH are mostly basing their analysis in data. They brand themselves as analytical (invested) neutrals and not fans (like AHTTC).

I'm holding off subscribing simply because I've no real interest in consuming town stuff when it's as boring as it is at the moment. Don't read or watch any of the httv stuff for the same reason. I'd imagine the viewing figures have dropped off a cliff this season if everyone's the same. Might change if the football picks up but tbh it's not something I ever expected to have to pay for.

Should probably offer a weeks/months free trial. I'm not going to sign upto something without guaranteed continuity or knowing the quality of the broadcast without the weight of the examiner behind them or what future interviews are scheduled. But good luck, hope it goes well. When you say “weight of the Examiner behind them”, what do you actually mean? Steven Chicken was single-handedly propping up examiner football coverage. I broadly agree with your central point, but David Hartrick did a few articles too, and I recall looking at Dom Howson when there was the odd story pertinent to both HTFC and Massive. I thought DH and DH were pretty decent as well TBH. It's all academic, mind. Hartrick was a frequent freelancer for t'Examiner that's now been dropped (and he's now part of the WeAreTerriers podcast anyway) and Howson (who mostly reported on Wendies anyway) has gone the same way as Chicken.

If you've ever read the Examiner whilst Steven Chicken was employed there, then you'll be familiar with the quality of the articles. It's basically the same analysis you got from that, but without so many of the filler pieces. If you've ever listened to the Ooh To Be A Terrier podcast, then you'll be familiar with the standard of the podcasts. If you haven't heard them, there are some on here to "try before you buy": podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/ooh-to-be-a-terrier/id1260672990It's a fiver a month. If you don't like it, cancel with no obligation. You're not tied into an expensive contract.

FTR I haven't signed up yet. Partly because I've been busy and partly because I saw t'Examiner were still providing some articles and I thought I'd see the standard. I've now seen the standard and although it has been worse <cough> BRW <cough> I'll be subscribing this week.

It seems all media is now heading in this direction .

While I despise Reach for how they have systematically degraded local news coverage, in the end it was because people were not interested in paying for it once t’Internet delivered free information. I’m happy to subscribe because I like the content and it represents good value to me, but it may not to others. I think SC has been an excellent Town reporter but I do know of others who are not enamoured of his style - it’s all judgement and choice. It may be that being forced out of a salaried occupation for a weak and shrinking business is the best thing that could’ve happened to him - I genuinely hope so.

To be fair, I think he's a better analyst than a writer. His stuff would improve significantly if he just got someone to go over the article and check for grammatical errors. That said, I'd readily pay for good analysis and poor grammar, but wouldn't pay the other way around.

WRT paying for stuff.
Remember the old days when you used to hand over money in exchange for a physical paper copy of The Examiner?
Set against that, a fiver a month seems like good value to me.

I listened to it on the way to work this morning actually. It's great hearing the old memories of Doug and Mel in particular. They mention somethings you probably forget about with everything that's going on recently.

Key takeaways - working on targets, possible permanent deals, some loan with permanent options. We don't need to sell, but it may make sense to get return on some players with contracts running out (Diarra, REG, Ayina and Hogg were mentioned by Chicken). Cartwright mentioned that we've looked abroad and this is an option we are pursuing. Also discussed bringing players back from loan - said it's an option but seemed to suggest was unlikely.
Also looking at summer deals - particularly players at other clubs who will be available out of contract.

Maybe I'm putting a negative slant on it but SELLING players in Jan? Really? Not recalling Rhodes? Out of contact cheapo deals in the summer. So a continuation of the summer window basically!

But good luck, hope it goes well. Well A) The podcast has a back catalogue on Free to access media to vouch for its quality as does the 5 conclusion written articles and B) it's a monthly subscription, so if it doesn't continue, you can stop paying. But, given your postings on here, I can see why you'd be reluctantant to subscribe to listen to and read the views of 2 people that look at things objectively rather than with an agenda.

Yes, cos selling a player who will leave in summer for nothing so we can afford to buy a better player with the proceeds is a stupid policy.

Messrs Chicken and Hartrick would be far better if they stopped analysing stuff objectively and producing evidence based content. Instead, they should - as grown men - spend literally years prattling on about some Walter Mitty-esque imaginary source of transfer information. That would be much better.

Why does Cartwright describe players in the international market as 'wildcards?'
If you do your job correctly they're not wildcards you absolute whopper.
Stick to selling clapped out Ford Fiestas lad.
