Sad news about Sven. Has terminal cancer and a year to live.
Fond memories of his time as England manager during my childhood.
And his record was only bettered when Southgate became manager.

Awful news, awful illness.
Hope he's as comfortable as he can be.

That 5-1 at Germany will forever live in my head. One of my best mates got married that day. Said he began consumating the marriage as the teams were being announced (in the break between afternoon and evening "do")

Was on holiday in Majorca while that game was on. Watched it on a big screen TV in the hotel. Quite a few German holidaymakers in there watching as well. Have to say they were a credit to their nation afterwards. Went out of their way to come and congratulate all us English. Even though we'd given them loads of stick as the game went on. All the best for the future, Sven.

Very sad news. I never took to him as England manager. Too many distracting shenanigans going on around the team and the WAGS and you got the impression Sven and that girlfriend of his were the ringleaders as much as anyone. End of the day we had 7 or 8 genuinely world class players in that era and most of the rest of them werent that far off that label, yet quarters was as close as we got. That side should have been winning trophies.
best wishes to the guy though and hope his final months are as comfortable as they can be.

That 5-1 at Germany will forever live in my head. And I was lucky to witness it . A truly special evening when Beckham ran the game, Heskey was a battering ram and the German fans sat near us all shook our hands at the final whistle. Sad news.

My godfather was in Germany for the game. As he was about get in a taxi, someone else got in and it drove off, so he booted the taxi.
He ended up getting nicked and missed the game before being deported. Still has the ticket as well.

Dreadful news. Never the most charismatic manager but the antithesis of what preceded him (Keegan) in his coolness and calm demeanour.
The Germany match was simply believable. Hard to think we were 1-0 down. His ultimate failing was never getting the best from the midfielders he had at his disposal. I dare say, if Southgate had his centre backs, we’d have won a trophy in the last few years.
It all unravelled when Ulrika told the papers how he insisted on loading the washing machine (not sexy slang) before rattling her. We stopped thinking of him as a genius introvert and thought he was.a bit odd.
No doubt he changed our national team psyche and has lived a magnificent life so far. Fingers crossed he outlives his prognosis and finds peace in the months ahead.

Don't forget that in this era there was still the division/cliques amongst the squad of Man U / Arse / Liv etc that has been confirmed by the likes of Ferdy and Nev, that was definitively not conducive to an effective successful team mentality.

Apparently it was a big issue that never really got resolved until Southgate came in. He played in that era so will have realised what a negative it was. Also cant imagine the circus around the wags that there was under Sven being allowed now under Southgate . Dont think any of the current team's wags are particularly known are they?

Been wracking my brain for the last 10 mins and I can't think of a single "wag" from the current bunch, yet I could easily name at least six from the "golden generation". Southgate may not be my cup of tea tactically, but he's certainly helped eradicate that culture from the national team, and it's clearly helped given how close we've been getting to winning something.

His insistence on playing Scholes wide, when he was the best English attacking midfielder of his generation, was baffling
