This is a random post but thought I would give a shout out to Mansfield Town. I remember being in Spain watching us beat them on penalties in the playoffs back in 2004(I think it was Lawrence who missed a pen for them...he was a good player!) We obviously went on to get up into the Premier league, while Mansfield ended up dropping down into the National League. I think it shows how one game can massively influence the trajectory of your club. I was buzzing that we won at the time but over the years I sort of started to feel sorry for them. Anyway, it looks like they might be finally getting up into League One after all these years and I just wanted to make this post to say that I hope they do pull it off. It will have only taken them 20+ years!
I really hope we can stay up but the last 8 games are looking very tricky!

I'm with you. I stayed in a hotel in the Lakes in the early 80's and two other guests were massive fans of the Stags. We talked football all night. I was at Cardiff and it was a sliding doors moment for both clubs. I'd like to see them go up too.

I’m still not sure Colin Larkin’s late goal should’ve been disallowed. But, thank fuck it was and god bless Liam Lawrence’s misplaced confidence and misplaced Panenka!

A tremendous day in Cardiff that was. I had a suite in the hilton. Lots of great bars just around the ground as well

Probably because most of them are just Forest fans who like Mansfield

That's Chesterfield not Huddersfield! ! No, they genuinely don't like us because we beat them that day in 2004. Their chance to escape the bottom tier. Instead - 20 years of League Two and non-league while we existed mostly two (or three) divisions above them. For which they blamed us. I wonder if they feel the same way about Newport, or if distance from the event has made the hatred more intense. Though their rivalry with Chesterfield is quite something. Was quite friendly, then the miners strike occurred. One side scabbed the other (suspect Mansfield scabbed Chesterfield, but I can't remember for certain). Now a deep-seated hatred.

They were a good side that year. Remember them giving us a bit of a shoeing at ours just before the end of the season..1-4 maybe? But I thought we edged it that day at Cardiff and shouldnt have been in the play offs at all really..Thanks Pav for that brain fart moment at Cheltenham that cost us automatic!
Glad theyre doing well. Good luck to them. Hope theyre the best team in Nottinghamshire soon enough.

The Lawrence penalty is still a highlight of my time watching Town. He pointed to his name on his shirt, and then failed to score. Utterly brilliant, thanks Liam. UTT

Nothing wrong with that goal, linesman flagged for the ball crossing the line from a corner but it didn't and was a perfect goal. After the game going to our coach we saw some Mansfield fans getting a right beating, that was bad and i am not surprised they don't like us.

As I was living in Notts at the time I was on a train full of miserable Mansfield fans going home. Had to be as sympathetic as possible.

Couldn't tell from where we were at the opposite end of the stadium and I've STILL never seen a definitive screen shot proving one way or the other.

I do have a picture of the big Huddersfield flag hanging over the car park but I can’t put it on here?
I do remember it been a right bastard queuing for the train back to Huddersfield from Cardiff though! Had to stand up like sardines all the way up to Manchester

Its desperately close and had the lino decided it was in we wouldn't be able to call it a howler in any way.. but to me it looks more out than it does in on the footage.

Didnt we sign one of their flair players on the back of that promotion - Junior Mendes ?

Yes - he tore us apart and looked sensational when they scored 4 at ours, so we signed him but he was crap for us! Montserrat international though 😄
Nice one putting those highlights on, great memories

Just a quick corrective - it was a 3-1 defeat in the home regular season game, not 4. Delayed kick-off because of the number of fans, which did not help our very young side. Just didn't show up under the pressure of the automatic promotion run-in.

The other thing was that Jacko insisted on picking three strikers and didn't play Rob Edwards. He did the same at Cheltenham. Had he played Edwards instead of McAliskey, as he did in the play-offs, we'd have been up automatically. See also: Pawel Abbott backpasses.

Remember going to Field Mill in about 2001 for an FA Cup game. Sure they were in a lower league and beat us 4-0 and the atmosphere was horrible....really threatening inside and outside the ground for reasons I never really understood!
Dread to think what would have happened if we hadn't won that play off final....Real 'Sliding Doors' moment

Also at that FA cup game. We went thinking we'd be a decent bet to progress but that's Town for you. Don't recall it being particularly threatening though we did leave before full time as it was obvious by then we'd blown it.
