Quick question for those fans that were around in those days. Can anyone remember, or does anyone know when Harold Wilson made his final visit to Leeds Road? I know he was at the Newport County match in 1975 (seen below with Keith Longpockets), where Bobby Campbell broke his leg, and then again in January 1978 where he presented a cheque to a Town lottery winner in the President's Lounge (though he didn't attend the match the following afternoon), but it's hard to find if he ever visited again. Does anyone know? Or remember anything?

I remember seeing Michael Foot at Leeds Road when we played his beloved Plymouth Argyle. I can't remember the date or year but probably around 1985?

Fantastic, wonder where that postcard is now. A lot of Wilson's possessions went up for auction in 2019, but as far as I could tell, the postcard wasn't amongst them.

Not that anyone will be particularly bothered, but I found that Wilson seldom visited Leeds Road, at least during his political career. Most of his appearances at Town games were when we played down South, and we tended not to lose when he attended.

I remember in the old 4th division and Watford were top of the league Elton John had bought them that season and the plan was to fly up in his helicopter and land on the Leeds Road pitch. That week the monsoons had arrived and the pitch was far too wet to take the weight of a helicopter so i don't think he attended the game.

Bit in bold surprised me as I always assumed that he went to live on the Scilly Isles straight after retiring in 1976 and never came back. Must be some truth in the old adage about never assuming

johnnyshistory.com/haroldwilson.htmlHarold opened the Huddersfield Hotel in 1984. He met Mick Buxton and some of the players, (photos on johnnyshistory) but he doesn't appear to have watched us play on what was likely to have been his last visit here.

Funny how the memory plays tricks on you. Going by that I'm probably about ten years out, assuming that he did eventually move down there? The story I remember is that he moved to his house on Scilly after his mind deteriorated and it was a much safer/private environment for him to live out his days. Again, this could be rubbish but it's what I was told/read at the time.

Never knew that website existed! Fond memories of Johnny’s in the 80’s, also worked part time behind the various bars there for a while when a student.

Met him in the 80s, our main topic of conversation was Town. So, yes, he was a bit of a fan.

Before my time but I was told that when Wilson was in attendance there would be a PA announcement informing the crowd the Prime Minister was in the ground.
In news that will shock absolutely no one this announcement was always met with a chorus of boo's from the crowd.

I remember him appearing at Leeds rd in 1975 in the Division 4 home game against Brentford, and I'm pretty sure there was an announcement informing the Prime Minister was in the ground. As for the chorus of boos, well certainly not at that match, BUT there was a massive chorus of ooooooohs!!! I'll never forget it - standing in the Cowshed and there was this oldish woman, definitely had had a few, but she was having a right go at the Brentford players warming up in front of the Cowshed - calling them every name under the sun - and then this Brentford player, probably about 2 or 3 yards outside the penalty box, unleashed this missile of a shot, it hurtled just over the crossbar but then dipped viciously into the Cowshed end, and guess who it hit, right on the bonce? Yes, the oldish woman calling them names! I remember the sight of her being poleaxed, and wide-eyed in, well yes, what can you call it? Wide-eyed in shock, I joined in the massive Oooooooooooohhhhhh!!!! chorus from Cowshed, followed by a kind of aftersound echo from the East Stand. Everybody was shocked and paralysed in sympathy for her plight, but she got up and starting laughing!! I seem to remember a slightly perturbed look on the face of the Prime Minister, but he resumed his normal countenance when it became clear she was ok. Town won 2-1 and the oldish woman was bouncing in delight, all over the shop, when Town scored.
