It is 60 years ago today that Ray Wilson played his 30th match for England, a 1-0 loss to Argentina. It would be his final cap as a Huddersfield Town player.
No-one else in that time has ever received a senior England call-up while a Town player.
Will we ever see another one?

Only if we get the academy at full speed….
How many other Huddersfield born players have played for England (whether or not have played for Town….)

Only three Huddersfield born players have represented England at senior level. They are Bob McNab, Trevor Cherry and Frazier Campbell. All played for Town at various times but none of their caps came while at the club.

I initially thought that was a little low but reading this we actually punch a good average www.acmewhistles.co.uk/stories/the-places-that-produce-the-most-england-international-footballersI remember thinking Frazier Campbell, Jermaine McGillvary, Leroy Cudjoe two Rugby League England internationals and Luther Burrell (Rugby Union England player) were all Huddersfield born and all the same age (literally same school year) Very good effort to have four active internationals. Especially when you add Huddersfield lads - Ryan Sidebottom who is only a few years older and was playing cricket for England until 2010, Tom Skyes was World Superbike Champion in 2012. Ed Clancy (also from Hudds but just born in Barnsley) is one of the UK mosts decorated Olympians (three golds and one bronze). It's a shame not more is said about the local sporting success in the Town

Some seem to prefer to talk everything down about our town than actually celebrate its achievements. It's the same with our club.

Clare Taylor would be a fourth, perhaps. Ken Taylor as well. But I meant football. Clare Taylor, ex-Moor End High School, played for England at both football and cricket. There is another Claire Taylor, a mere cricketer, albeit a very good one. Coincidentally my 4 children all attended Moor End and the other Claire went to the same college as me, although much, much later. Chris Balderstone for Town and England cricket and too many to shake a stick at for Huddersfield-born England cricketers.

While we had no genuine international class of English players during our time in the PL, I can't help but feel that if we had been another team, one or two may have got a call-up. I often look at some of the players that get picked for England and have to shake my head.

Definite big club bias I mean why is Solanke not getting caps right now; last year 42 apps and 21 goals - 19 of those goals in the PL from 38 games Only Haaland, Palmer and Isak got more in PL last season. Solanke also did it for a team who finished 12th He leads the line as a single striker - so makes a better deputy for Kane than Toney (not in form) and Watkins (great season but not shown lots for England) That he's not even getting looked at is crazy to me

It will be hard as i am 98! Another thing to put on my Town bucket list!

Lets have a wager on what comes first... A town player gaining an England cap, or us getting a home penalty.

Roughly equidistant between Bradford (4.1 miles) and Halifax (3.7 miles) is Shelf. To Hudds town hall is 9 miles. We can't claim him.

We will get a pen in at least one of our 1st 5 home games this season Probably get one either 2 or 3 down, or up, in the last minute of a league match. Then the slate is clean, even though we haven't had a meaningful home one for years. You know like the one she gave Bristol City in the 10th minute of the 5 added on.. Or the PNE one when we were on top and lost 4 1.

So, of the (probably) thousands that have won an England cap, we can claim 3 local born players?
It would be interesting to see the stats on this, to see what sort of bias has been at play through the years.
I’m not suggesting we would increase our quota, but as someone has suggested, big club bias is at play here. If you think about our three in a row, surely we would have had one or two making the England team back then? Compare that to the successful clubs in the modern era.

Nowhere near as many internationals. In fact hardly any in Towns most successful decade.

Ref made a massive deal out of it and weirdly enough Lee Trundle kicked it in for us.

There was a point a few years ago where there were slim pickings in the goalkeeping department - you could argue that there still is - and the third choice would occasionally be picked from a Championship team. Smithies can't have been a million miles away from filling that illustrious spot.

Interesting fact about Bob McNab. His daughter Mercedes played a regular character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
