Hi all, I am new to posting on here after many years of reading the forum. Over the last few days I have been reading some comments about lack of signings etc and started to get frustrated by some of the comments we do know we are not in the championship any longer don’t we ?
Signings made so far look to have strengthened us and we have not really lost any yet, I would suggest our squad now is a lot stronger than it was this time last year and we are now in L1, I have no idea how so many can moan about the current squad and general feeling around the club at the moment. Listening to Kevin Nagle’s comments I also am sure more will be coming, but only once we find the right players, and I still think a few will leave some on the fringes for sure but maybe a couple of first team starters subject to the correct offer coming in, even if they leave I think we will strengthen after with the funds received.
I am not sure there is much to be negative about at the moment looking forward to a new season and winning some games again.

Welcome to the forum. Overall, I would say I am very optimistic about the direction the club is going under KN. He’s doing everything right off the pitch and I will look forward to going to games again. However, related to your point: “I have no idea how so many can moan about the current squad”. I moan at the current squad because it still contains some of the constants and perennial strugglers of the last few seasons. Players with such limited technical ability still form the core of our team. And also players who are lacking a bit of heart when the chips are down, to be frank, are still here.
People think that just because we’ve gone down a division our players will suddenly play front foot attacking football. We just don’t have the passing ability or the creativity for that - yet. I do not see us making the play offs with this current squad and I foresee between 13th to 10th with a late playoff push. I hope to god we start the season on fire but at the moment I don’t believe we have enough to push the best 6 teams in the division.

Wow really I personally think we have one of the strongest squads in the league at the moment, and it seems a manager who knows the league. The players you say struggled maybe struggled in the championship but many of them also played at a high level in the championship recently and let’s not forget this is not the championship I am thinking we should be top 6 and the position in the top 6 could for me be any of them. You really think these players are not good enough. Go through them one by one and the squad is strong with a potential starting 11 something like below without a few more signings that I am sure will happen, I would be surprised if many teams have a better 11 and bench than below GK Nicholls LWB Miller LCB Spencer CB Helik RCB Lees RWB Sorenson CM Hogg CM Evans CM Kane CF Healy CF Koroma Leaves more than this not selected but something like Maxwell, Pearson, Headley, Sorba, kasumu, wiles, jones, ward, bojan, Harrett, Iopenda, Turton, Ruffles, Jackson…….oh and Baulker when back next year. I still think we will get another 2-3 in also and maybe 2-3 of the above leave. CF being the one we need next in my opinion to strengthen first 11. That is really really strong for L1 and really stronger than we went into the championship with last season, many would expect the squad to be weaker not stronger after going down a league.

With some players still to leave!! why do some fans think we are going to walk this league. Remember how good the squad was before and it took our keeper to get the winning goal at Wembley and pundits and managers are saying "this will be the toughest league one yet" oh dear, mid table finish unless we can keep certain players and bring in 2/3 more quality players.

If we clear the deadwood and bring in some more quality, then I think we'll do well under Duff.

It's worth asking a different question, if we go into the Peterborough away game with the current set of players would people expect us to win, or even have us as favourites to win?
If the answer is no then the current squad ain't good enough. No way should we be odds against to beat Pboro

If the answer is no then the current squad ain't good enough. No way should we be odds against to beat Pboro I don’t go to any town game expecting to win, but first game away at Peterborough I expect us to compete for a win and probably be happy with a draw and delighted to start with a win, I think this current squad can win the game also.

Goalkeepers: Nicholls, Maxwell, Chapman, Hurl
I'm happy with that. No signings needed unless anyone leaves. Possible scope for Chapman to go on loan and get regular first team football if nobody leaves? Would be useful experience for Hurl to step up to third choice & if he's needed & not deemed up to it, the emergency loan system could kick in.
Centre Backs: Helik, Lees, Balker, Pearson, Ayina, Turton, Spencer, Ruffels,
With Balker injured, Helik likely to leave and Spencer being young and potentially playing at wing back anyway, we could probably do with another CB. Ideally a quick, left footed one that can pick a pass. At this level that's less likely, but if you can get two of those 3 qualities (even if it's in the form of a loan from the PL) that would be most welcome.
Wing Backs: Sorensen, Turton, Sorba, Spencer, Jackson, Miller, Headley, Ruffels
Sorba is likely to leave, Spencer, Turton & Ruffels might be played elsewhere and Headley is inconsistent. Nonetheless, I think we're probably ok here.
Central midfield: Kasumu, Hogg, Austerfield, High, Iorpenda, Wiles, Evans, Kane.
Austerfield & High aren't good enough. Hopefully they can be moved on and kickstart their careers at a level more appropriate for them. Evans & Kane I'm optimistic about and I think both could prove to be key players next season. Iorpenda & Wiles are apparently performing very well in preseason. For all that he was dreadful last season, maybe he'll be worthwhile cover - or even competition. Defensive options of Hogg & Kasumu. Kasumu is going to pick up injuries and suspensions. Hogg can't play 51 x 90 minutes. I wouldn't mind seeing another defensive midfielder in there. That lad from Wolves?
Forwards: Healey, Ward, Koroma, Harratt, Radulovic, Jones, Hudlin, Phillips
There are reasons for optimism and reasons for pessimism with each of these. Healey and Ward looks like our best pairing, but neither have great injury records. Koroma is inconsistent. Harratt has his off-field issues. Radulovic is technically excellent, but would probably be bullied in children's football. Jones is superb, but his hamstrings are as sturdy as wet crepe paper. Hudlin was a punt that probably won't work. Phillips is doing well across the pond, and apparently did well at a lower end side in Morecambe - but he's 24 now and needs to be somewhere that he'll get regular first team football.
I'd be looking to add 1, maybe 2 strikers. Our forward line lacks pace and power. Personally I think the latter would prove more important. We're likely to be playing against sides who will set up with a low block and aim to hit us on the break. Essentially, we could do with the player we hoped Simpson would become in order to shift their defenders around a bit, more than pace to break an offside trap.
Pace at the back would be welcome in order to allow the rest to play a high line without as much fear of a counter attack.
Priorities: 1) Pacey CB (ideally left footed, strong defensively to cover for defensive weakness at wing-back, good passer of a ball) 2) Absolute bruiser of a centre forward. 3) Defensive midfielder 4) Pacey forward.

I'm looking forward to the new season, excellent manager and recent signings and even if we don't sign any more players I optimistically think we'll be amongst the top third. And what a relief it'll be seeing a few wins and not to be fighting relegation.
Just hope we get some version of iFollow for those of us o/seas.

I certainly won’t be getting the names of the many Sleepers in the team that embedded it into the ground last season on them either for sure... Anyway given that they’ll be no Barriers to success this season I’m sure every other Saturday I’ll feel like The Flying Scotsman ! 🚂 🏴

Birmingham are nailed on for the top spot. Already had the best squad and added to it with players that I'd have been impressed with if they'd been signed in the division above.
If they finish with fewer than 100 points I'll be surprised.
Other than that it's difficult to predict. The shape of our squad is still not clear, with players still to arrive and leave. Same for other squads in the division. Bolton look stronger so far, and Peterborough have lost a good bit of their defence but made some decent signings higher up the pitch. Those 3 are my tips for promotion as things stand and I think we're a ways behind them.
There's still over a month to go of the transfer window yet though, and whilst I don't think Birmingham will be catchable, 2nd spot and the 4 playoff spots are still up for grabs.
Are we contenders for promotion? Yes. We're one of a few sides that I wouldn't be surprised to see celebrating at the end of the season. But as things stand I think we're playoff contenders. We don't look like serious contenders for the automatic spots. Not yet, anyway.
Current prediction = 7th to 9th. Just missing out on top 6.

My concern is a lot renewed on the expectation we would be genuine promotion contenders, be that automatically or more realistically, via the play-offs. I don’t believe the current squad is but there is plenty time left for new recruits and I remain hopeful the right ones will be brought in. If we don’t start strongly though, some supporters will drop off. We definitely need a good, solid striker, after missing out on May and I’m sure the club know this is a priority. I’m convinced we have the right man in Duff and he will get us going again but it might take more than one season to get us out of League 1. Ultimately, I can see us having a decent season in comparison to many recent ones but will fall short of an instant return to the Championship.

HTFC Have finally gotten around to updating the B Team and under 18 pages, no sign of Hudlin in the B Team or first team yet no news on him either being sold or loaned but clearly that is what is on the cards for him. Hopefully he gets another club but he is clearly not near our first team or B team, I am surprised they would leave him out if they didn't know where he is going. My guess is a loan to a league 2 club.
