the more you watch it the dafter it looks...Spencer got blind sided and panicked...albeit the striker milked it as he was never going to reach the ball anyway.. Preceded by Nichols flying out and missing his punch earlier it seems those dying minutes jitters are still with us ?

As good a player Spencer is he is prone to rare silly moments, perfectly understandable due to his experience and just something we'll have to accept for the time being.

It took a few watches for me to spot it, but on reflection the ref was right, and kudos to him for spotting it.
A bit of inexperience from Spencer but I do wonder - if those were given every time there'd be a dozen penalties in every game.

I’m a bit of an outlier I think re Spencer as I don’t really rate him and thought he was the weak link on Saturday (albeit I know he’s playing out of position)

There might be to begin with but players would eventually get the message to keep their bloody hands off the opponents. Shirt pulling/holding is a pet hate of mine & I'd give a penalty every time.

Pisses me off does this side of the game, it’s been too easily accepted and promoted by the pundits, most of them ex pros.

Spencer is the weak link at the moment but as mentioned - he's playing out of position (and he's still a kid!).
I think we'd be getting more out of him if we played a back 4 but the flip side is - remember before his loan north of the border he looked out of his depth, then came back firing.
He's a quick learner and this should hopefully stand him in good stead to learn another facet to his game.

The highlights confirmed the penalty, just a shame it was one of the few things the Ref got right on Saturday…

I’d like to see Spencer on the right of the 3, think it would benefit him and as he’s the guy we’d like to step out with the ball I’m not sure why we’re not doing it.

He started off well when he first came back but since then has been pretty average, with a fair few mistakes. Potential but alot to learn yet.

In that case why are there not 4/5 penalties every game?

Looked a stonewall penalty at the time so no surprises. Can’t believe the amount of fans who couldn’t work out what had happened and as for the ‘expert’ summarisers on Radio Leeds, the less said the better. Couldn’t believe that between Glennon and Oggy they didn’t have a clue what had happened either!

In that case why are there not 4/5 penalties every game? Because officials don't have the bottle to give them. That's an easy one. Game all but done, consolation shot at goal after the defender does something daft on the second phase after a corner when the box has cleared a little. But when players were being held on set-pieces for the duration of the game, he gave nothing. On the other thread I highlighted three instances of holding by Stevenage, one of which was where their defender had his back to the ball to concentrate on wrestling Helik. But they just don't have the bottle to give them even though they should, every time. They justify it by saying 'where both players are at it, don't give anything'. Well, Helik doesn't have to fight his way out of that hold if the defender doesn't have a hold in the first place. Same in our box; there will have been instances where we had hold of Stevenage players who then had to fight their way free.

The rules have been tighter up this year and contact in the area by a defender is now a penalty, think we might get one soon! Just like when a keeper comes out for a cross and misses it but bumps into a attacker this is now also a penalty.

My problem with this is it probably should have been a pen but there is no actual difference between what happened here & all other corners, so it's wrong to give just one.
I think someone hit the nail on the head when they said the ref was trying to curry favours with his association who are supposedly trying to clamp down on holding in the box. I suspect that as we were leading 2-0, well into injury time, his initial thought before the corner would have been I bet I get a chance to give a pen here & I will as it won't effect the result of the game.
Apparently, the bloke is 4th official in the Prem this weekend, so his plan may have worked.

Must admit, thought the referee had made a mistake, but it's clear that Spencer was caught out, pulling back the Stevenage player. The referee was dreadful, he missed the blatant foul on Danny Ward, he also failed to award several fouls, against Stevenage, in the 1st half, fortunately it didn't matter, as Town won the game. Interesting that Andy Davies, is a former Premier League Referee, no wonder he no longer referees in the PL - UTT.

As Nicholls flew out we thought it was given against him (the ref made a coming together gesture aswel)

I can understand the rationale for the award of the penalty……however would Town have been awarded the penalty had the tables been turned?
We simply want clear rules that are consistently applied.
I appreciate that this is easier said than done, especially given that referees (who have a difficult job) have to account for the “gamesmanship” of the players.

Watched the game online and the Stevenage commentators were raving about him saying he looked our best player. I would personally swap him and Lees around. Lees has always played as a left sided centre back in a 2 so why not put him there in a 3?

This comment leads me to wonder if it would have been given if we were only one goal up or if the scores were level. As things stand, it's made a small difference to the GD but that's it. Not going to make headlines in the way that (e.g.) Turtinho's "handball" at Bristol City did last season.

Yeah, with Ruffels seemingly out of favour, swapping Lees and Spencer over does seem the most sensible alternative. However I understand (and agree with) the decision to keep it as it is with the current squad options. Both Lees and Spencer have played on the left before so in that sense it's a coin toss. I just look at the attacking side of that role and Spencer having played at LB and pushing forward on his wrong side means he's less exposed with that part of his role than Lees would be. Personally I would prefer a back 4 (overall, not just for Spencer's sake), but then I can't really argue with Duff's results with the way we're playing now.

They should stop stopping the game before most corner kicks.
Just let them carry on doing what they were doing and award the penalty or free kick accordingly.
It makes a mockery of the rules by giving the players a second chance, and even after the regular warnings they still carry on.
If refs actually enforced the rules as they should we would see most games ending up with at least one dismissal, but once the players get the message it should start to clear up blatant foul play.
I’d love to read the actual directives they get provided with, but I expect much of the instruction is verbal. Keep it controversial, keep the gravy train running…

But surely we need better if we want to be challenging for automatic? A pacey left-sided CB in Balker's absence is now imperative. Almost as much so as the striker we've needed for 5 years. Fingers crossed we've got irons in the fire and are close to completing the couple more signings we're crying out for.

For all the things Duff is getting right, I’m amazed he hasn’t put him there. He’s a right back by trade so will barely have needed to use his left foot. Now it’s the foot he’s been asked to use the most.

Chris Foy analysing it Same bloke who gave one of the softest pens I have ever seen given against Barnsley in the playoffs This one by Spencer was ten times more a pen than the one he gave I’m not bitter Honest

Keep it controversial, keep the gravy train running… Fully agree. I'm not arguing that it wasn't a penalty but there were so many instances during the game of Stevenage players holding or shirt pulling which weren't penalised by the referee - I can't believe he didn't see all of them. If these had been punished then perhaps Spencer wouldn't have thought he could get away with doing what he did.
