Didn't we have in on loan a few years back as a full back. I was convinced of this too...but soccerbase and wiki says no. I think perhaps I thought Andy Taylor (on loan from Blackurn, and arriving with England u16, 17, 18, 19 honours ) who was patently rubbish, was Alex Bruce. Therefore, whilst my initial thoughts on Bruce signing are that he is rubbish, he might not be after all, it might be Taylor. Although Bruce is probably rubbish too...Lee Clark has signed a parade of players in that position who are degrees below the players they're replacing.

The problem is McCombe is better but because our manager has his favourites and holds grudges, he has got rid and brought in a player no better. Clarks record of signing centre half on loan is piss poor and I expect no different here.
Might sound like a nob but I'm just furious at how McCombe has been treated

I don't see what the problem is with this signing? I'm really confused. x Don't worry you're not on your own, it's becoming increasingly difficult on here to work out which are Town supporters, which are those here from opposing teams and the ones that reckon to be supporters yet belittle this clubs every achievement. We today have signed two experienced players from the championship and the moaning and groaning on here is unbelievable, a couple of weeks ago most on this board were shitting themselves at the prospect of losing our manager now he's not going anywhere it seems he can't do anything right. Confused you should be. Roll on Monday. :udders:

McCombe is average at best, and can't be relied upon in the long term.
Bruce has acted like a tit whenever his path has crossed ours, however he might be a good addition. It's a brave move by Bruce to join Town as, with many, he's already seen as some pantomime villain!!
Time will tell. But on reflection, it's a net improvement to the squad.

Good signing this, Bruce isn't bad at all. Interesting that in the last couple of months he's not only gone from L**ds to Town but also Rep. Ireland to Northern Ireland.....he obviously doesn't give a flying one about rivalries between the teams he plays for :-)

Right, I don't see how we lose here. McCombe is unlikely to play much in the next month as he is (rightly or wrongly) fourth choice. He goes to PNE, does well and we get an in-form player back in January. Bruce is a different defender to those we have in that he can play a bit too. Maybe Clark wants to see us bring the ball out from the back more, like when he first took over. It's a clear tactic of opposition sides that they'll drop off McCombe and allow him to have possession, cut out his short options and force him into a relatively tricky pass or carrying the ball into nose-bleed territory, in the full knowledge that they'll probably be getting the ball back sooner rather than later. I quite like McCombe as a defender, unless he's left isolated to pace or asked to start our attacks.
If he does well, we gain with a player we probably wouldn't have used in the next month. Who knows, if PNE want to keep him, he may be used as a sweetner in any potential move for Hume, as some believe us to be intersested in signing him in January.
Bruce could turn out to be a dud, although I don't think he will. He may not even play, or he may come straight in and do really well for us. None of us know right now, but I don't see this business as a bad thing for Town. McCombe is not the messiah that some are trying to claim he is - infact there would have been many a time over the past 12 months where he has been (unfairly) derided and called all sorts of names. He's a decent League 1 defender, we know that. Bruce could be a very good Lge 1 defender - let's just wait and see!
Don't see how we lose, or why McCombe being sent out to gain match fitness is a sign that he is being treated really unfairly.

I can't see how Bruce can go straight into the team. If we lost our beaten run he would be the most abused player in HTAFC history. I see why we can put Parkin in because of his position, a mistake won't be punished like a defenders would be.

Isn't he the bloke who snapped Adnan Ahmed in 2? Yup, that's the guy. A decent gust of wind could have done that to be fair!

I like to think I'm normally quite rational and balanced in my views but this signing makes me irrationally angry!
Besides anything else whenever I've seen the lad actually play he's been shite. I can't see what he'll add that our other error prone centre backs can't do already. Certainly if given the choice between Bruce and McCombe I'd take Boom Boom every time. I'll support him if he wears the blue and white... but it will be through gritted teeth.

Can you imagine this: LC 'I want to sign a player on loan from l**ds' DH 'What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who? ' LC 'Centre back called Alex Bruce, Steve's lad' Seriously, the lad has played at a high level and has done a good job. Hope he does well for us.

Only became aware of this late last night. Right here goes from a Leeds Fans perspective;
Can be sensational on his day e.g. Arsenal Away in the FA Cup , seems to play better against passing teams but struggles against hoof it into the box opposition. Was way down the pecking order at Leeds especially with the 5 subs rule and seemed to be a forgotten man at Leeds with many forgetting we still had him.
With sendings off, injuries and mysterious 'players downing tools' for Simon Grayson e.g. O'Brien it seems surprising that we have let a half decent defender in Bruce go at this time and many at Leeds are a bit mystified by it. Suspect if he plays he will do well for you and a little bit miffed we have released him.
Interesting to read some reactions on here, what would they have been like if Andy O'Brien ex-Chickens and ex-Leeds had moved over God Forbid ! By the way can we have Gary Roberts in Jan as part of the deal ? .........Or it could be that Bruce is crocked and we are taking revenge for Agent Rachubka ex-Town the juggling clown being sent on a seek and destroy mission to Leeds ?

It's a bit different to Andy O'Brien. Many town fans still (rightly or wrongly) hate Steve Bruce from his time here and many blame him for our decline from the championship to league 2. In the early days of his career Bruce came to the Galpharm playing for Wednesday. The crowd was on his back all game and I really mean all game. It wound him up and he made a reckless challenge for which he got a straight red card, leaving the field to gleeful abuse. It was a bit of a shock Bruce wanting to come here to be honest.

Lets just give the lad a chance, Maybe just maybe hes trying to make ammends. If he plays for town im 100% behind him, and would hope any self respecting town fan would want the best for this club and get behind both him and the team.

I don't think I can remember a centre half pairing getting consistently good reviews on here. They have all had good days and bad days. The fact that we let in 4 at Swindon gives some insight into our depth defensively and I think that is probably what has prompted this.
McCombe and Cooper have struggled this season and Kaye & Clarke are on 3 bookings each. Cooper, who I thought would be decent and I think is on a season long loan, has not managed any sort of run, 3 starts - 2 sub appearances. So that really just leaves Kaye & Clarke as regulars.
Given the amount of times Lee Clark has said 'let in silly goals' I guess this is to try and make us a bit more solid.
Truth is Alex Bruce got a lot of, probably unfair, stick for being Steve's son (playing for Leeds later did not endear him to us either). He is aggressive and has consistently played above this league so lets give the man a chance.

Just been checking out when Bruce played against us for Sheff Weds, 2004/05 season. He was sent off just before half time. We ended that season with 8 wins and 1 draw from our last 9 games. And Luton won the league with 98 points (!) Unbelievable how times change, look at them now.

A Rabs mistake in the penultimate(?) game cost us a Play Off place, as we dropped two points at home to a side we should have beaten.
It was our first season back up from Division 3, we were in serious trouble of heading on a downward spiral towards a relegation battle until we came back to beat Stockport, who were dead and buried all season.
We then went to Hartlepool and won 1-0 in one of my favourite Town games of all time! We got absolutely battered, but Hartlepool couldn't score, then Pav had a shot from distance which was going out for a throw, but Boothy managed to flick it into the far corner of the goal! I remember singing "Adnan, Adnan, Adnan Ahmed" to the tune of Amarillo quite a bit!

I saw him play twice for Leeds last season and thought he was Man Of The Match on both occasions If he gets anywhere near the level of performance he showed in those games we will be singing his praises. Centre Half has been the only obvious weakness in our team this season , hopefully this will improve things there. Good luck to him, I hope he's outstanding for us

people forget Peter Clarke was playing in a struggling side prior to joining us. He seems to have done ok so this Bruce fella might be just the kind of thing we need. Then again maybe not, but he is playing for us now so get behind him.

Cant believe the amount of shite on this forum, the lad deserves a lot of credit and must have unbelievable bottle to come and play for us and while hes wearing blue and white and fighting for our cause he shud get our immense backing because giving him stick is not helping him or the team in our bid for promotion, for one i think his dad did nowt wrong and assembled a great team which i thought were brilliant to watch and then had the rugged pulled from underneath him by the tossers above (stewart), also we have struggled with centre halfs for god knows how long and from what ive heard from leeds fans hes a great signing, mccombe is shite and good ridance to him but this lad might be just what we need to get us up so get behind the lad and stop all this bullshit!
