There are very few footballers who are admired by the whole football community including fans from every corner of the league. Gary Speed was one of them. Total shock. R.I.P

Just listened to Robbie Savage and callers paying tribute on 606. Very moving and touching yet so difficult broadcasting. RIP Gary.

Been choked all day a few tears shed in the MarshLeeds household and just reading some of the sentiments on here from you lads has started me off again.
Hilly's post for me summed it up I,m not one for excessive sentiment over Celebrities and Sportstars who I have never met personally but Gary Speed gave me and many others so many happy memories and he came across on TV since as a thoroughly decent football guy.
Rivalries seem trivial on days like this but all at DATM take a bow for your heartfelt messages I salute you. Best of Luck in South London tomorrow should be a great TV game.

At the end of the day, Marsh, we are all just blokes talking shite about footy. I dont for one minute believe anyone ACTUALLY hates anyone. Its nice when your team are doing well and you get the banter. For once, I have never seen such universal acclaim for one individual. Not seen a bad word. Thanks for your wishes tomorrow, mate Good luck too to Leeds (there, I said it!!!!!!!!)

Absolutely horrendous news. Total shock. My thoughts are with his family, I hope they didn't see anything and can just remember him for their loved one. A true loss to the game. R.I.P

Forget rivalries.
In the days of cheating, diving, inflated wages, football has today lost a true proffesional, a true gent, a proper footballer. Why no-one knows ? RIP Gary Speed.

I now make myself very fortunate to have met him as a young man, just making his way in football. I lived in North Wales at the time and played cricket for the village in which he came from. Two of the lads who played in the same team were good friends with him from school, so he came along to watch us quite a lot until he started to establish himself at Leeds. The last time I had a proper chat with him was just after he'd played for Wales against Denmark in 1990. His direct opponent that night was Jan Molby, and Gary couldn't get over how good he was, and told me that if he could be half as good as " the big man " then he'd be happy.
I hope you were happy fella, such a sad waste and a terrible way to bow out. RIP

Still shocked, a massive loss to football. A brilliant footballer and looked like he was on his way to carving out a successful career in management. From everything I've seen and heard he seemed a genuinely nice bloke as well. Can't imagine what his family and friends are going through. All I can think is why? Not because of some perverse need to know what happened but because it scares me that someone that seemed so content, driven, optimistic and grounded could feel the need to take their own life when they seemingly had everything to live for. What ever the reason I hope he's found his peace now.
RIP Gary.

I think we should have a banner for Gary Speed at the game tomorrow.
Show our class as a club and respect for a real football man, irrespective of old rivalries.
As a Town fan in his 30's who went to school in Wakefield I know that Gary Speed inspired a generation of young lads then, and continued to do so.

Some things transcend football rivalries and even football. Gary Speed came across as one of the nicest chaps in football, that is why the Britain is saddened by this news.
Thoughts are with his family.
RIP Gary Speed - you are a modern footballing legend, a true hero of many to my generation when growing up.

"God's speed" ? Not blasphemy, I mean he's with god now. No offence, but I think it sounds a bit tacky. Something simple would be more appropriate IMO And I think a banner should be done for only the right reasons, solely to pay respects. Not to demonstrate 'class as a club'.

I meant show our class and respect as football supporters, I think that sentiment was clear.

Didn't mean it like that, I meant to be seen by many to show our support along with the whole football community and show our respects. I would never trivialise this or anyone else's passing.
Ps your right it was tacky though, deleted it, again meant with good intention but could be perceived as tacky.

I think we should have a banner for Gary Speed at the game tomorrow. I think this is a brilliant idea - not because we are on the telly - just to show support for one of the nicest blokes in footie. Will there be a minutes clap/silence? RIP Gary Speed and condolences to his family XX

Joe and BLUE&WHITE, not meant to cause offence just think that a banner should be for the right reasons (which it is), and that the content is appropriate.
I think it's a very touching idea.

No offence taken man. We are all on the same wavelength I'm sure. My choice of words perhaps not quite reflecting what I meant too perhaps.
