Because it will change the way the Government, media, law, royal family and police function. That will happen whether you care about it or not. I'd like to give you details about exactly how but I'm not in charge of the country. Yet. Now fuck off.

Glad we got that sorted.

I do know everything about the future. I can predict how Parlliament is going to introduce new press regulation. I also know how newspapers will introduce new checks and measures, and the new policies police will introduce to investigate these cases and maintain their own checks on the relationship between the police and media. I know exactly how the relationships between all the various affected bodies will change and how the general public will respond. I even know all about the American investigations and the effects they will have over there and about how they will work with the British police to deal with this. I also know how this will change over the next 50 years.
I'm just not telling you.

not if you don't.
strange way of measuring the true impact of the world's events but whatever floats your boat.

Are you being deliberately thick? History is measured by important events that affect people's lives whether they think they do or not. Apathy and ignorance do not make things less important.
What you're suggesting is that if you're approached by a bear, the best bet is to put a towel over your head on the basis that if you can't see it, it can't see you.

Being a Prole in Nineteen Eighty Four was probably more fun than being in the Outer Party.

Not at all yet, what I'm suggesting is that I'm not going to shit my pants and fuck off because some prick is telling me there is a bear coming when its likely to be a fucking ant.

A lot of people didn't care about Wapping, and look what monster 'that' spawned I could probably think of more examples, but I'm drinking beer

A lot of people (the vast, vast majority of the population) didn't care (enough) about Wapping because it made no fucking difference to them whatsoever.

...which doesn't absolve a society that has a 'selfish and insular' ethical and moral code (and, really, backs up Elt's standpoint)
The key is in your addition of the word 'enough'
I could have shut my gob and turned a blind eye to abuse I saw on a ward I worked on. I cared enough about keeping schtum and having an easy life and not being persecuted by management
I cared more about ignoring it, a precedent being set and someone's granny (which could be my own) left for 6 hours in a pool of piss
I can't do the 'not in my back garden' and 'turn the other cheek' shit. If you decide to 'care less' about stuff that doesn't affect you, then you are (on occasion) complicit in the wrongdoing.
People should really grow some balls and tell it like it is
I have to suppress anger every time I see my fella log onto The Sun website (because it is idiot language sport coverage) even though he was angry at the hacking scandal.

Look mate. It's beyond boring again. If you can't or won't see that a structural crisis in Government, police and media is going to change things, it's pointless talking about it. If you're arguing that none of that matters, good for you.

I am l looking forward to watching the highlights of today's Commons Select Committee Meeting.
I expect a beanfest of squirming and supplication
I might even buy a bottle of wine to enhance the overall experience.
Shame Mr Whistleblower popped his clogs yesterday and won't be able to watch

Rubbish Elt
It's clear as day that things will change. All I'm saying is that I don't think it will affect me or the average man on the street.
When governments raise taxes, slash benefits etc - that affects good proportions of the common man
I've yet to see how this hacking scandal changes anything for me other than I didn't read a copy of the NOTW on Sunday....and I've yet to see anything from you to say otherwise.
If this scandal brought down Cameron and the coalition then that would be a different matter.
I don't think it will though.

Knock yourself out. Rather than watching that though why don't you do something useful like save the snow leopards or part the red sea.
Shame you don't 'grow some balls' and tell your husband that he's complicit in it rather than 'surpressing your anger'.
Yeah, I know, he your husband though....

All that proves is there is no hope in the proles.
This won't bring down the Government, but it might be the end for Murdoch.
Good luck arguing that just because Deal or No Deal is still running and Aldi hasn't run out of MRM that means it's not important who governs the country and how, who polices the country and how and who provides us with information and how.

OK...so why didn't you have this same approach when we discussed the economy of the country?
Didn't you argue that red or blue, they were all a bunch of corrupt c**** that were in it for themselves and it didn't matter which colour governed?
Yet all of a sudden, this will change everything...but you don't know how yet.
I've maintained that it important who governs, especially with regard to the economy and the financial well being of the country. This is my prime concern. It also seems to be the prime concern of a number of political commentators that we are twatting about with a few hackers, corrupt police and complicit politicians when the financial world could yet again crumble.
Still your no hypocrite and know best...but without any specific detail...so crack on....

The cozy little guilds pre-Wapping were the very definition of "insular and selfish". As far as I recall, they'd never supported any other union in a strike and basically fleeced everyone for all they could, the c****.
Which is not to say I'm against unions, just that the one good thing Murdoch did in his life was to smash that bunch of mad luddites.
And Elt - Merkle has a point about your vagueness and arm-waving, you know. How is this going to change how e.g. the Royal Family function? Do we even know how they "function"? Or do we all just take a guess?
My guess is someone infinitely nastier, but pretending to be nicer will fill the vacuum. Like Labour after John Major.
(ignorant c*** edit)

Merk
Seriously, as I've said repeatedly - how the hell am I supposed to know how this will fall out? My fear is that it will make things worse not better, that it will become an excuse for the powerful to control the media, but I have no idea. Nobody does. All we do know is that this is important and just because a large swathe of the population is more interested in Eastenders doesn't make it less so.

Chicken Licken wasn't half as dramatic as Elt.
It's massive, pay attention, constitutional upheaval, transformation....
Why, what will happen?
I don't know...nobody does.

I reckon Another_MrLizard would be offended if he was referred to as my husband. Husbands are so 'last year' We have had 'the conversation'. He knows my views. He does as he pleases. I don't have to like it. Anyway, he likes tits too, so his reason are (fnarr) twofold. And whist you are 'at it', you generalise too much to support your argument. I am not a serial crusader. I hate cockroaches. They serve no purpose, but if the Government decided they were going to exterminate all cockroaches, I'd throw a party instead of becoming a fully subscribing member of the cockroach appreciation society I like real ale. I am not a CAMRA member because I am not an anorak. But I support the cause by drinking enough porter to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool each year.

The lead singer of The Flying Pickets had silly hair and looked.....well... silly
