First season in Div 1, 1970 / 71, away at Manchester United, drew 1-1. I was about 9 and just remember my dad telling me to be quiet all game. We were stood up in the paddock in front of the main stand, if my memory is correct, with a little white fence in front of us.

I think it was chesterfield away in the FA Cup, early 80's I think.
My lasting is memory is seeing what looked like thousands of Town fans being escorted up the road by police singing what I recall as "bring out your riot gear, huddersfield are here, huddersfield are here"!
I think we won 1: 0 and there was snow on the ground.
Happy days.

Gigg Lane Bury was m. my first ever Town away game in April 1966. Town won 4-0. Kevin McHale on 33 minutes, then three in four minutes on 53, 56 and 57 from Gilliver, Weston and McHale again. Marvellous. Dang Epsom. You old. Cheers for that! 60 actually, but I don't feel it or look it (IMO) I've also got a near photographic memory.........well, my wife says I do when it comes to Town!

Wigan 79/80. We won 2-1, it was a midweek game under flood lights. Happy days. Who out there has memories of that evening? I went the year before that to Wigan and we lost 2-1. First away game was Halifax about 75/76 we lost that 2-1 and Roy Ellam scored for us,I was trained in disappointment early on.

Marvellous. Dang Epsom. You old. It was 68/69 and we won 2-1. I'm of similar vintage and was also there. The first away game I can remember was Dec 65 at Coventry, we won 3-0. Harold Wilson, then Prime Minister, was also there. According to George Brown, who was Deputy Prime Minister, they were at some function in Liverpool in the morning. At about 12 o'clock Harold announced "Right, we're off!" and left so he could get to the game.

1966 - Preston away 1-1. From memory it was the week before we played Sheff Wednesday at home in the cup with the near 50,000 attendance.

Sheffield Utd on 3 December 1996. Andy Payton scored to put Town in the lead and then it all went down hill from there finishing 3-1 to Utd. living near Sheffield I had to sit on a coach on a school trip to Salford with a load of Utd fans giving me stick. Not the best introduction to following Town away from home!

Boxing Day 1970 - Man City. 11 years of age. Went with my uncle who was a Citeh fan and my Dad who was a Batley RLFC fan. Went in the Kippax Street stand. Uncle and Dad straight in through adult turnstile while I was stuck at the back of the longest junior queue ever - all Citeh fans apart from me with my blue and white fastened round my wrist. To be fair they ushered me to the front of the queue pretty sharpish. Drew 1-1. Tony Book scored a bizarre own goal to put us 1-0 up and I think Colin Bell equalised for them. Pitch was appalling - more sand on it than Blackpool beach. Coming out if the ground afterwards a Citeh fan pushed past my Dad knocking him to the ground. Dad got up and pushed the Citeh fan back and the next minute they are both rolling about on the floor wrestling. Hilarious. Happy days.

Halifax around 1977. 0-0 & the most exciting thing was the pitch invasion when as usual the advertising boards collapsed. Wow. That was my first away game too. Me and my old man laughed when a notorious neighbour was marched past us by the old bill.

Wolves 1 Town 0 Easter Tuesday 28 March 1967. Night match. Crowd of more than 40,000. The thing that most struck me was that they were all supporting the home team. We got home at 3 in the morning in heavy snow. Before the days of the M62, so it was Glossop, Buxton, etc. We lost 1-0 at home to Wolves the day before as well. They had Peter Knowles and Derek Dougan.
Apart from those matches before my time and the 3-1 defeat at Sheffield Utd, I was at all your first away matches mentioned above. Didn't get in at Anfield in 1970 (5 mins late - all the turnstiles were closed) or Elland Road in 1972 (thousands were locked out) and hearing the home team score from outside is the worst experience. The Bury cup tie in 1968-69 was a Town win, 2-1 or 2-0, and we lost 2-0 at home to West Ham in the fourth round.

From memory it was the week before we played Sheff Wednesday at home in the cup with the near 50,000 attendance. 12th March was my first away game too with Gilliver getting a header. He got another 17 league goals that season. The fifth round cup tie was the week before: Town (Steve Smith) 1-2 Weds. They got to the final: Everton 3-2 Weds. That was an exciting season with us in 1st or 2nd place for the bulk of it. 7 players made over 40 league starts including John Oldfield in goal for all 42 games. He only let in 36, keeping 20 clean sheets. Unfortunately the 2 goals conceded without reply in the last home game, v Coventry, meant we finished the season in 4th place. As a result Gilliver was sold to Blackburn then it took 4 more years to gain promotion.

I have a confession to make my first away game wasn't watching Town. It was watching Sheffield Wednesday at Bolton in 96.
We were footy training down at rastrick playing fields that morning when one of my mates (who still is a Wednesday season ticket holder) said he had a spare ticket and if he asked his dad I should be ok to come. At the time id never been to a Premership game and Bolton were newly promoted and if I remember rightly hadn't won in the league all season, so I said yeah why not.
It was at boltons old ground think it had a supermarket behind the away end? Anyway was a nice spring day and much to my amusement Bolton won 2-1.
I got Chris Waddle's autograph after the game. If I'd have known he was gonna score direct from a corner against us for Bradford a year later I wouldn't have bothered.

Burnley in the cup Jan 15th 1972 won 1 nil (Clarke?). Sat in what is the away stand now with the Burnley fans. I remember that there was no stand down the side only police vans that got filled up quite rapidly.

My father took me to some before, but the first away game I remember was going to Anfield when we were sat at the top of the 1st division. We lost 4-0 in front of 52,000 and have never reached those dizzy heights again. Mine too, although I probably went to Halifax or Bradford in the West Riding Cup before it.

I'm fairly certain mine was the 6-0 win at Bury in 1988-89. Not a bad start!

First away match was away to Bury mid to late 60's, can't remember the year or the result. My main memory was the railway special with the police and dogs on the train and what felt like a long walk to the stadium. Do you think that they would bring these back again ;-D First home match was an evening kick-off against Leeds with a 2-1 win. I think that Revie had not been their manager for long at the time. Very tired at school at next day

I live for the day I see our team in the top flight. 99 percent for me , Maybe just 1 percent to show all the glory hunters I live with and have come across. My first away game was the year before at Middlesborough 1 - 1 draw, a goal by Steve Smith that clinched promotion.
I knew Henry Cockburn who was the trainer under Ian Greaves, he told me about the Liverpool game, said the team coach was buzzing until they got to Liverpool and saw the ground, then it was like a morgue. Henry said they were lucky to come away just losing 4 - 0, I still wish I'd gone though

Nottingham Forest back in the early seventies. Didn't have a clue where Nottingham was, except somewhere down the M1. 3 of us 15 year olds set off to hitch on Friday night, walking down the hard shoulder from Tingley. Got a lift quite quickly from a bloke who thought we would get run over and die if he didn't stop and help us. Which was great, except we arrived at Nottingham about 22:30, with no idea where the ground was or what to do for the next 17 hours or so.... Luckily found an abandoned car and slept in that. I have no recall whatsoever of going to the match, or how we got home again!
Had a similar experience one year when Town were playing the Yids at the skip, and we decided to queue overnight for tickets. Got the last bus and prepared to huddle down at the ticket window when the door opened and a bloke came out and asked us what we were doing. When we told him, he went back in and came out with tickets for us! Again great, but then we had to walk back home to Batley as the last bus had gone. Got back and then slept in the local playground cuddled up with a little floosie called Alice.
