He is a very good keeper as proved by the amount of games he has played for his age. People thought Murphy would get the number 1 spot but he is nowhere near as good as Alex. There has been interest in Alex and he has been told if the bid is good enough he is free to leave in the summer, whether he leaves to probably spend a couple of years on the bench in the Prem will be up to him. I will remortgage the shed that should be enough to start the bidding war

I thought he had made some big improvements to his game this season. He looked to be commanding his area better and he had also cut down on his time wasting. I have always though that his shot stopping and reaction saving ability was top class. However after saying that his mind seems to wander and he creates his own problems which is a shame. For the past few seasons I would have agreed to let him go, now I am not so sure?

Wouldn't surprise me if a lot of clubs are looking at Smithies and prepared to offer big money for him. Still young and years off his peak with getting on for 300 appearances. And proving himself to be one of the best keepers at championship level.
hes probably our most valuable player in transfer fee terms.

I have just proved it. He's cost us NO points this season and saved us points this season. Bournemouth away, earned us a point. Cardiff at home, earned us a point. Bolton at home, earned us 2 points. I can list more. Come on then Ben lets have a reaction after Saturday cos i am still fuming, Smithies has cost us points, Every game we lose is down to the opposition putting the Ball in the back of our net, Smithies only Job is to Keep that ball out of our net end of, He has failed to do this on 60+ occasions this season and 9x in the last three games, Some muppet said to me on Sat yes but he made a good save in the first half, So what if he he still let another 2x goals in means nothing. For example Theo Robinson got laughed off the pitch at many a game for not been able to put the ball away, Many on here say Ward and Stead aren't good enough for us even though they continue to score goals for new clubs and do the job they are asked to do, So you will have to forgive me if i don't take any notice of you or think you are right because it's all bollox, Smithies is employed to keep that ball out of the net, The goals against backs up what i am saying regardless of how bad the defence is, Which i agree is shit, But so is he. What a load of waffle, every bit of it. I asked you to name me a game and goal that Smithies was directly responsible for where we dropped points this season. You've given me nothing because there isn't one. I've given you examples of saves that have saved/gained us points. You're agenda is embarrassing, making out that smithies is the worst player to grace towns turf. Get some facts and then come back, because your having a shocker.

Why do people keep knocking Smithies? He does make mistakes but no more than most keepers and saves like the one he made on Saturday have kept us in games many times. I don't think he was at fault for either goals as the midfield and defense let him down and didn't protect him. Its good to give him a kick up the arse every now and then but he is the best we have and the best we can realistically afford. If he had a very good defense infront of him people wouldn't give him half as much stick. Given how quick some were to get off the pitch on Saturday atleast he had the balls to acknowledge those of us still in the ground.

Ok Ben of course it is, I am drawing a line under this now though, You obviously love Smithies and see no wrong, I see stats and those stats tell me a whole different story to what you and many other's see, Which is why you spend a great deal of your time and over 2000 posts on here, Yet non of you have ever actually done anything in football other than on the playstation lol. What i can tell you is that even with a weak defence the keeper leaks far two many goals and as a result the goals conceeded have cost us. I am fully aware that Smithies has a weak line infront of him and i have also given him credit for his shot stopping etc but his all round goal keeping skills cost us. I am not going to fall out on a personal level with you but i will agree to disagree. I asked you to reply ref Sat but my main point to the question was the number we conceed but still out of the three times he was called upon he at least saved one of them. Lets hope every game goes the same way and he saves one out of three, All we need then is for the men upfront to score three every game and we will start winning.

You are aware that sometimes a keeper can't save the shot? And that it isn't his fault if it goes in?
Smithies isn't at fault for any of the 9 goals we let in in those 3 games. None of them. Not even in the slightest. Hi did make a few really top drawer saves in amongst though which kept the scores down. One of, if not our best player in all 3 games.

You're blaming Smithies for the two goals on Saturday even though he wasn't at fault. It's utterly bizarre. I've posted 2000 on many things and in them 2000 posts I've posted less dross than you have. If you so qualified and well educated in football, then back it up with your qualifications and position in the game. And to be clear, I don't 'Love' Smithies. I like him as a player, he's a very good championship keeper. If he makes mistakes I'll post about it, if I see rubbish posts about him I'll pull you up on it.

I am fully aware that keepers don't make the save everytime, However he lets in alot of soft goals, He blames everyone infront of him barring himself, By the sounds of the majority on here Smithies is above reproach and barring walking the ball in the net himself will never be blamed, So the goals are to be blamed totally on the defence and Smithies does no wrong, That's what you are all saying right?

Just that blaming him for every goal we concede is ridiculous. You seem to be utterly clueless about the goalkeeper position. Name the soft goals

Unfortunately I was present at all three losses last week, and if it wasn't for Smithies, from memory, Town would not have conceded nine goals in those three games, it would have been more like 15. Town would have been 3-0 down at Brentford within 10 minutes if it wasn't for Smithies. This Haveit character is on a wind up. I doubt he was at all three games last week.

I don't know what any of you think about Smithies but in my opinion he has to go. I have never really rated Smithies in any of the divisions we have played in and certainly not this one, him along with a few others are a liability for us, I think we have a perfectly good keeper in Joe Murphy and I don't see why he doesn't get a chance after Saturdays performance by Smithies and last nights according to a few. I just dont think he is good enough What are your thoughts? Smithies is a very good goalkeeper.pity his defence arent as good

He made two decent saves at 1-0 at Brentford.
But I thought he was badly positioned for the first, getting easily beaten at his near post (I was stood right behind it).
Having said that, it was Wallace who should take most of the blame.
And no keeper in the world would enjoy playing behind a back line of Carroll, Wallace, Hudson and Smith.
That defence would struggle in League One, I'd venture.
So much for our supposed "progress", our defence has somehow got even worse over time.

if we defend well in games, that to me means smithies has much less to do.. your keeper making a shitload of great/good/necessary saves isn't good defending, its you goalie having a good day whilst the defence get away with it..
we defended well against Brentford at home, but smithies had to make a good save at the death, therefore the defence as a whole had a good game..
blackburn defended well yesterday, their keeper wasn't overworked and the shots on/off target were kept to a very reasonable amount to say they were playing Liverpool..
we didn't defend well at Bournemouth, smithies had a very good day and they missed at least 2 absolute sitters..
the day we defend really well and we lose because smithies makes a mistake on his own, give him a bit of stick..

To name a couple of more games off the top of my head, Fullham away Middlesbrough away Rotherham Sat for the one on one with Sammon although already 1-0 down, The 90min+ goals conceeded away at Rotherham, Norwich away when they gave us a right hiding to kick start there season, Brentford and Charlton also of recent games. All of which i went to, Also his positioning which i have questioned could have cost even more goals had the opposition had someone on the end of balls which have been flashed accross the net. Most consistent player of the season, Yeh you are right, Very consistent at picking the ball out of the net. Well Done.
