At the same time that Ayre - Ruberry sold Stewy, they pulled out of a £500k deal, Bruce had agreed, to bring a young Chelsea defender John Terry What could have been!!!! FIGO I think Chelsea were the ones to scrap the deal. Didn't they change manager?

I think if DATM had been around then, we'd have all been in agreement it was a poor decision. It was around back then. Part of the Rivals network, a much better setup (IMO) than we have now as all the boards were linked between clubs so there was much more balance with visits from opposition fans. The Ipswich board was called 'Those Were The Days'. One year later they renamed it to 'These Are The Days' with a pic of Stewart in their header. They did go down that season and reverted to 'were' again

FIGO I think he was on loan at Forest at the time. I actually remember seeing him play for West Ham back in the 90s as a full back.

In hindsight it was a bad decision to sell him or were fans unhappy at the time? Fans were mightily pissed off at the time, and even more fucked off when he scored the winner for Ipswich when we played them soon after.

I remember Geoff's original site moving to the Rivals network and really enjoyed using it. You could easily visit other team's boards from a simple drop down menu at the top of the page if I remember rightly. For some reason Rivals decided to completely re-design (fuck up) their message boards, which led to the mass abandonment of the Town Rivals board for this one. That was in late 2007, but it seems like yesterday. I tried searching for the old Rivals board a few years ago but it had disapppeared with the rest of the network.

In hindsight it was a bad decision to sell him or were fans unhappy at the time? Fans were appalled by it. I think if DATM had been around then, we'd have all been in agreement it was a poor decision. I remember the banner with, "Pubic Ayre" on it, the first match after be was sold. My son just called my attention to this.............I spray painted that banner in my back garden on the Sat morning before the game, after 'removing' a huge pce of cloth from work during the week - I was so appalled by the nonsensical decision to sell our STAR player when we were almost on the brink of promotion.........and had never made a banner before ( and only 1 other since!). We (me and my sons) hung it from the edge of the upper-tier of the South Stand just before kick-off, but it was only there for 3-4 minutes before the (bar)stewards rushed up and removed it. I thought because it had been removed so quickly, that no-one ( except for 2 policewomen in the nearby Kilner Bank stand, who pointed at it, and then broke into laughter!!) had really seen it --------so I am dead chuffed to know that, because of your comments ( and good memory!) my efforts weren't wasted after all, and that the protest against the decision of the (obviously brain-dead) executive, Mr P. Ayre (Liverpool - you're welcome to him!) WAS SEEN! Thanks, mate.

As I've said before, the single worst piece of business in my time following the club. I believe Ian Ayre had a big hand in it. That season was our big chance and someone monumentally blew it. If I remember rightly we were top of the league just after the Liverpool cup game before Xmas and played Charlton at home live on Sky. They beat us 2-1 at home, but in truth it was men against boys. They went up that season, although we managed to win at their place with an incredible Wijnhard volley in just about our only attack of the game. Anyway, after the Charlton game our form dropped and the sale of Stewart to Ipswich put the tin lid on it. Stewart scored the winner when we played them soon after at Portman Road and they went up as well. We limped to end of the season, but still only needed a point to get into the play offs from our final 3 matches. We lost all three without scoring a goal - 3-0 to Bolton, 2-0 to Stockport and 3-0 at Fulham in a game where we went down with a wimper. A season that started with us playing magic football ended in utter disappointment. And we all know what happened the season after...

In hindsight it was a bad decision to sell him or were fans unhappy at the time? Top of Division 1 with an absolute gem of a striker, we were of course very unhappy. I sense the trolling in this. There was however no DATM so if anyone was unhappy, at least the chairman wouldnt log on to read NickHudds comments. Its funny Bilo how you appear when Bradford win a game, youre like a bear in hibernation when you get dicked. There was - its being going in different guises since at least 1998.

I was more pissed off when we sold Cherry and Ellam to Leeds, and One of the best left footed strikers, Worthington to Leicester city! Nothing has changed in 50 odd years!

At the time, Ian Ayre wrote in the programme: 'judge me at the end of the season', and we have done ever since.

Stewart scored in that match if I remember right. Am I right in thinking the Liverpool game was televised too? I have a memory of watching some of it at the airport (might be confusing myself there). A couple of weeks running I'd cut the league table out of the Sunday Times and blu tack it to the kitchen wall (saddo) with Town proudly at the top of the heap. Seem to remember Sunderland were up there too...? My memory is shite.

A couple of weeks running I'd cut the league table out of the Sunday Times and blu tack it to the kitchen wall (saddo) with Town proudly at the top of the heap. Seem to remember Sunderland were up there too...? My memory is shite. Yeah, I think Stewart scored a consolation late on. Made the game look tighter than it actually was. Charlton were far better on the day. The Liverpool game was television - a Sunday dinner time game I seem to remember - the day after I met the woman who was to become my wife (pissed up in Johnny's!). I was there and Town played really well. If Clyde had had his shooting boots on we'd have taken it to a replay. It was one of the last times Town played really well unfortunately. After that our form dropped off and although we stayed near the top we never re-discovered our early season form. I've just looked at the final table and Man City went up with Charlton (Champions) and Ipswich (via the play-offs). I thought Town came a place outside the play-offs but we actually came 8th ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999%E2%80%932000_Football_League) Just had a look at the results from that season ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999%E2%80%932000_Huddersfield_Town_A.F.C._season) and realised I forgot the win against Port Vale in third to last game. I thought we lost the final three without scoring. Anyway, according to Wikipedia we were in 6th place going into the final game at Fulham - I went to that game and Town were absolutely shocking: hardly had a shot. I remember it being a lovely sunny day and one end of the ground being a sea of blue and white. Shame the team didn't turn up. What a missed opportunity.

I'm still fucking fuming. That mindless sale and losing to Peterborough in the play-offs first time are my lowest moments supporting Town.

Yes, by far my worst ever moment in 50 years of following Town. Bloody madness and we still haven't recovered from the downward spiral that it triggered.

Possibly - I know we lost and I can't remember it ever being a worse time to be a Town fan It was 3-0 yeah, I was there. They had a Danish lad in midfield out of Chelsea's reserves and he tore us to bits. Long drive home that one, bloody hell. Felt like the world had ended. Fulham went up the following year as I recall. Pretty certain it was in the paper that morning that Bruce was going to Birmingham for the new season an all. Maybe that's why he wasn't given anymore money at the time as Town knew he was leaving?

He started the next season, got sacked after about 12 games, then went to Wigan, then Crystal Palace before eventually joining Birmingham.

The fee was £750k, Terry was about to, if not had, talks but our board pulled the money from Bruce so the deal collapsed. Think Terry's been in record since saying its closest he came to leaving Chelsea.

May have just been a rumour in the paper then. I'm certain I remember someone holding the article up at the front corner where the teams go back into after the match going mental at Bruce. Been a few years since then though!
