If the big clubs are drawn against each other, people whine because the smaller clubs aren't going to play against them. If the big clubs are drawn against the smaller clubs, people will whine because there's no interest from smaller clubs in the latter stages of the competition. Keep it random & you keep a level of interest. If you're going to fanny about with a cup competition, do it with the League Cup. The only change I'd make to the FA Cup is to give the winners a place in the Champions League. Winning the world's greatest domestic cup competition should be worth more than finishing 4th in the league. id change the champions leage to; the champions and some other teams that were near the top...because we needed to extend it to make more tv money.. its not as catchy but you could make up for that by having a really good anthemic theme played before every game and give the clubs involved a shitload of cash?

Part of the excitement is thinking you might get drawn against Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal etc...
Would it still be as exciting if you knew you were probably going to get a "big club" every year?

The only change that i would want is, throw all the teams in at round 1, at least a few of the lower league teams would see some real benefit from the FA Cup

Yeah but can you imagine if Reading had won it 2 years ago and gone into the CL, being honest they'd have struggled to pick up even one point, and it'd mean worse performance by English teams so more chance of us losing a CL place to Italy for example. The FA can't be having that can they? I wouldn't be too upset by that. The Champions League is pretty much irrelevant to all but a small handful of clubs anyway.

The Champions League isn't even the Champions League anyway. Obviously they only keep calling it that because it sounds better, even if it's completely stupid that you could never win any competition in your clubs history and yet still be in the Champions League despite finishing 32 points behind the Champions in 4th place.

A common complaint by the misguided. It's not called "Champions" because you have to be a domestic league "champion" to enter it, it's called "UEFA Champions League", because it's a league system (that eventually goes to knock outs), the winner of which is the "UEFA Champion". If it was just for domestic winners, it might be called the UEFA League Winners Champions League or something!

I really enjoy the F.A cup though I would love an away match at Whitby Town as much as Arsenal but I suppose that's the beauty of the F.A cup . If York City had been still in the competition there would not have been many complaints from Town fans about a trip to York .
I would love a cup competition which included all the Scottish teams thrown in too especially if the fixtures could be played on a Saturday .If we scrapped the league cup and could play extra fixtures on a Tuesday / Wednesday it could be possible. I am sure an Anglo/Scottish cup would be really spicy too. Queen Of The South v Town, do you think there would be a lot of interest because I do.

A revamp of the format would be good. The FA Cup is dwarfed by the CL, PL and now Championship. One of the reasons why Town fans may have lost interest is that we are now playing good sides week in, week out. Even a draw against some of the PL teams would have been underwhelming.
For me, the draw would have more excitement if northern and southern teams were kept apart in rounds 3 and 4. We see the Reading tie as uninspiring. I doubt their fans will want a lengthy trek up the M1 in January. If the southern teams played each other and the northern teams played each other then there would be more local games, bigger attendances, better atmospheres etc. I would also scrap replays.

Maybe the best thing to do is for us to get past round three a little more often and this problem sort of goes away...

The whole point of the FA Cup draws from Round 3 onwards is to give every team an equal chance in the draw. That is the magic of the FA Cup.
I remember in the 1950s Cardiff City v Leeds United came out three seasons running in Round 3, not always with the same home team but the same two teams.
The odds against that must have been astronomical, but it happened.
I like to see top clubs drawn against each other it gives the minnows a better chance.

I agree David - you have regionalisation in the LDV or whatever the current incarnation is, You have regionalisation and seeding in the Carling Cup until round 4. And neither competition will ever be as traditional as the FA Cup. Eastleigh or Chelsea both had as equal a chance of drawing Manchester United on Monday, there's not many times that Eastleigh were on as equal a footing as Chelsea If there are lots of PL ties then it will mean a better chance for a lower league team to progress further. If seeding was introduced then you may get glamour ties but it has more chance to turn into a PL dominated competition, and that would do nothing but hurt the FA Cup. This talk of a boring draw etc, etc. won't be the case in Exeter this week, and it wouldn't have been on here either had we got a better draw, but that's exactly the beauty of it, the luck of the draw. Concocting it to produce anything but a random draw would devalue it IMO.

The only change I would make is to make the television games just as random as the draw. First 4 ties drawn out (or however many games are broadcast) would be shown live.

I'd change the rule that allows an owner of one club to be an assistant manager of another club in the same competition.

We was down to the last 8 teams drawn which included Manchester City, if we'd have got them instead of Reading, we'd have been over the moon. I'm glad we got a home tie even if it is against Reading. It's a winnable game which could then see us get a more glamour tie in round 4. 80% of the teams in the 3rd round would be hoping for a big Premiership side.
