GK: looks like 2 will be needed, Nixon in Sun today suggesting we will be getting Danny Ward on loan from Liverpool, but even with him, we will still need a back up. Steer, for me, did not live up to what he showed in his first few games, so an upgrade will be both welcome but not too hard to achieve hopefully!
Right back: I'm really surprised people can't see why DW has tried Dempsey there, Smith dropped right off at the start of the seson, came back quite well, though frequently lost his man at the back post over the season and simply does not have the necessary skills to be the driving, attacking full back that our system requires. Dempsey, while being athletic and attackingly well enough equipped, is, not surprisingly, lacking in defensive knowledge at the moment. If we want to progress, he will either have to learn at a major rate or we need someone different.
Left back: Hopefully now sorted, with maybe the back up coming from U21s, as our Aussie is just not up to it.
Centre Back: Everyone seems to be assuming The Hef is going to replace Hudson, but, albeit in the limited amount of clips I've seen of him, he may be right footed but he has played as the left sided CB, which means he will play there (which may well help Lowe, as I'm not sure if he speaks English, as I've not seen an interview with him like I have with The Hef) or move across to right sided CB, which would mean being away from Lowe and maybe in not his favoured position. For me, Hudson is adequate back up but should not be a starter these days. Lynch should always play, but does need to improve his concentartion some times - I can't believe he is not good enough to be in the Wales squad.
Most people assume we are getting stronger and DW has really improved players' fitness and abilities, as well as the spectacle for us fans, however, unless DW is as good at spotting a player as he is in other ways, we will be way behind other teams who will spend decent money.
We could be anything next season, but unless DW gets some real quality to work with, all the fitness is not going to be much help. I think he has done very well with the squad he has inherited and Lowe seems like a great acquisition - I trust DW knows what he is doing with the Hef, but his previous level of football has been well below what we need to progress, so is still a big gamble. I'm looking forward to the season already, but even if we spend a further £5m, I reckon that will be peanuts compared to what the majority of championship teams will spend.
I still think it's an exciting time to be a Town fan, I just don't want supporters expecting us to be challenging for promotion and then chucking their toys out of the pram if we're not. It's a bloody hard division, we are still financial small fry in it, but Leicester have shown that a strong team can be stronger than the sum of its parts. UTT

Thought DW said he was very happy with Smith and he was just trying Dempsey there to see if he was up to the job of covering Smith next season.

Key to a successful season is building from the back. We've currently bought a couple of German lads, but how good are they? Could be fantastic bargains, or just plain crap. Hefele is a third tier German league player whose team have been promoted ala Wigan standard!!!! More buys to come post season, wait out.

I think the vast majority of the German population speak English to some degree, and after I visited Berlin last year I discovered many of them actually speak it better than we do! Speaking to a Woman over there she told me that a lot of employers actually require their employees to able speak English with their ability to speak German actually being of secondary importance.

the back 4 has been our week point since we gained promotion. god help our progression if we have to rely on players like davidson. i think we need a new number one keeper, even if steer were available.

Yes, all over Europe children are taught English from an early age, it's mandatory in Greece and Albania and probably Germany too. If you want to get on in life you must be able to speak and understand English, it's the global language, eg all airline pilots must have English because air traffic control is always in English world wide.

Speaking to someone who went to the Patrons last week apparently Wagner said only Billing from the U21s would be relied on next season. The rest are short of the mark at present - not sure if someone who was there can confirm that Wagner definitely said that
The two lads aren't moving from Germany to be squad players. I expect both Lowe and Hefele will start more than they miss (when available). Lynch will be the other centre back. Smith is improving by the week under Wagner and with a full preseason will step up further. Smith had a touch of "second season syndrome" at the start of the year and some fans have written him off entirely ... despite him being a solid performer recently and Wagner rating him
We will also have a new keeper
That's three of the back five changing. Lynch is a good Championship player and Smith rapidly improving. I think the defence will be far better next year

"Anyone we bring in will be brought in to play in the first team. They will be brought in to improve that position, there is no point in bringing in someone who doesn't improve the first XI or to sit on the bench"
