First thing on Google Images when searching for Yorkshire Terrier. Do you think Wagner had a 'what the fxxk' moment before it was all explained to him?......... If you had to put a picture to sum up Town under Powell, this would do

Great thread this, although .... ..... if we get to vote after promotion, I think I'll be voting Rottweiler !! Nah, it's got to be a Staffordshire Bull Terrier........magnificent dogs. We lost our beloved Bella in May aged nearly 14. Intelligent, gentle yet tough, loyal and often funny. The very epitome of what a terrier should be. We'd have to beat off a few Port Vale fans for that. I was thinking German though and not miniature schnauzer, even though I had one of those wonderful dogs (who coincidently spent his last years in Staffordshire - it's a long story).

If I remember rightly (not guaranteed) there was no vote on nickname of Terrier. I wasn't keen on it at the time, likewise today. At that time the "Scarlet Runners" were never mentioned. We were simply "The Town.

we were know as 'The Town' , seemed rather unique at the time... how many 'towns' are there in the FL ? There are 7 clubs with Town in their name. Fleetwood Town Huddersfield Town Ipswich Town Mansfield Town Shrewsbury Town Swindon Town Yeovil Town

We were simply "The Town. There was definitely a vote, I think it was via the programme. Anyone with programmes from that time should be able to verify the alternatives. I knew about it but lived in north Leeds at the time so never saw the Examiner. The Babes and the Scarlet Runners were not options, they are just 2 nicknames from our very early days. The Babes when we were a very new team, and the Scarlet Runners because at that time (pre WW1), we played in a red strip. While we are sort of on the subject if Huddersfield became a city, would you support a name change to Huddersfield City? Swansea changed from Town to City about 40 years ago IIRC.

Brechin is not a city !

Brechin is not a city ! Brechin is indeed a city as it has a cathedral, though I agree it's really nothing more than a large village. Glebe Park is a cracking little ground - seen four games there. Brechin is a metropolis compared to the city of St. David's in Wales.

Brechin once laid claim to being a city, though the cathedral technically was not a cathedral. It certainly now has not got city status, classified as a town. Been to St Davids as well, once had a good holiday there.

My only concerns with the 'terrier' identity are that a) it signifies 'small' and 'punching above weight', how does that work when we are big and mighty? and b) since we adopted the terrier, overall, we have been on a downward spiral in terms of league positions - was it a bad omen?
other than that, I am happy

I always thought the Yorkshire terrier belonged to Ian Greaves daughter (Christine I think)' I also thought our old nickname was the Blues. This thread has enlightened me.

Christine indeed IS her name. The Greaves family used to live opposite me in a modest bungalow in Brighouse 1967-1971 and a right miserable woman too was Ian's wife, Winnie. They never had a dog during that period, which also coincided with the promotion to the First Division and the adoption of the new nickname. RealMadKid has nailed this issue; Colin Fisher had the dog and there wasn't a vote.

Also didn't the Terrier nickname coincide with that awful change of kit to the plain blue shirt instead of the iconic stripes ?

Town wore blue shirts 1966-67, 1967-68 and 1968-69. They had already changed back to the stripes by the time that the nickname was adopted in late 1969. Link to a fabulous website (not mine!)

Now we're into the realms of 'clubs who have changed their names' Totally different kettle of fish. I give you: Newton Heath Ardwick ... Just to get you started. And then there's teams who USED to be in the Football League ... Glossop North End Darwen ... This could become a busy little thread

As it's been eight hours and you've had no likes, I think I'll dare put my head above the parapet. I've never really liked our manufactured nickname, simply "Town" has always been good enough for me. The whole idea of a marketing man more interested in Rugby Union (FFS not even league) creating our nickname, unfortunately sticks in my throat a little. Whilst some "Terriers" are appealing the Yorkshire Terrier seems a little yappy rat of a dog that seems more readily associated with elderly women than the beautiful game. Sorry Up The Town. PS Just for clarity, I should state I quite like Terry The Terrier (except when he looks like a fox - not that really looks like a yappy rat). I'd certainly buy the bloke inside a beer.

It's not like we went against the grain, just about every club in the country has a nickname.. I meant in comparison to other nicknames I love ours.. The Brewers, Robins, Millers, Peacocks, Canaries, Royals, etc, don't cut it for me. Atleased we can build an identity around ours

Our nickname is the terriers, not the Yorkshire terriers. Think it epitomizes us very well.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, is the size of the fight in the dog.
My terrier is always giving it some towards the bigger dogs.
