Was asked recently why we are called the 'Terriers' and my response was 'names after the Yorkshire Terrier' which I know is the case, but then I started to wonder what the full history is.
All I can find is that we 'officially' got the nickname in the 1969-70 season and that it was put to a vote of fans to decide.
So :
What was the nickname between 'Scarlet Runners' and 'Terriers'? or was there nothing?
What were the options for fans to choose from if it was a public vote?
Why did they do a vote in the first place and let fans do it?
Any insight from you wise folk?!!

Not sure that it was ever put to the vote, but Town were named after 'Skippy' the Yorkshire Terrier in either late 1969 or early 1970, certainly in time for the team to have the red badge applied to shirts late in the season. A Yorkshire Terrier was seen as the epitome of Yorkshire fighting spirit and it embodied grit, the 'no fear' attitude and the small but spirited 'underdog' persona - all traits embraced by DW right now.
I have a feeling - although I could be wrong - that the dog actually belonged to Bill Brook, Town Commercial Secretary at the time.

Before the Scarlet Runners we were the Babes ( brand new club).

As I said earlier, I certainly don't recall a vote although that might have been the case. I've never read subsequently about a vote.

Hey Roger, the dog belonged to a guy called Colin Fisher who was my dad's mate at the time. He used to own the sweet shop on the corner at Honley Bridge traffic lights. He is now, along with my dad, sadly deceased. I used to take it for walks. Cute little thing it was but I don't think it lived for very long. Can't remember exactly though, it is pushing on for fifty years ago!

It's great to have people who almost have a PROPER connection to the club's history, rather than just being a fan. Well done on solving the riddle of the dog's ownership, and congrats on being 'connected'!

I always thought our nickname was in reference to "huddersfield ben" said to be the first of the breed.

The originals had a bit more hair back in the day. I remember when they first introduced the Terrier as our mascot in that Town shop on Leeds Road (just before the ground). My first thoughts were 'why not something more formidable like a T.Rex or Black Panther', but I'm glad we stuck with it.

Announced in the Bolton programme in September 1969 Think the idea was Bill Brook's but not the dog Aye it was just a weak marketing plan around the time of promotion. Can't recall voting - perhaps the Examiner was involved in trying to hype it up. Hated it at the time personally and not much liked it since - yappy mutts. However, I think Wagner has picked up the real spirit of it now and when he talks about it, he's given it some meaning, pride and worthiness.

Can't say I've ever been enamoured of the label Terriers.....bit yappy and lap-doggish for an adult soccer team.
But it appears that it could have been worse....Skippies, anyone?!

We were definitely know has The Town, then along came Skippy and if my memory serves my right i think the poor little thing got run over. It could have been worse, i mean the other famous Skippy at that time was a Kangaroo with it's own tv show in Australia.

Yorkshire Terriers are everywhere here in Krakow, they even have an annual convention/parade! Hate the things but always enjoy telling the owners about Town and Yorkshire.

Great thread this, although .... ..... if we get to vote after promotion, I think I'll be voting Rottweiler !! Nah, it's got to be a Staffordshire Bull Terrier........magnificent dogs. We lost our beloved Bella in May aged nearly 14. Intelligent, gentle yet tough, loyal and often funny. The very epitome of what a terrier should be.
